Dead wood is good wood!

If you have a tree that's unsafe in your yard, consider having the tree company leaving the trunk in place and just cutting it to a height that is safe. The remaining trunk will serve as habitat. (Consider planting Virginia creeper to climb up it to provide fruit for birds, serve as a host plant for hawk moths, and provide great fall color.)

For those living in the Northern Hemisphere.. 🍃 🍂 🍁

Virginia is in the East Coast flyway, which means we can observe many species as they travel thorough heading south for the winter. Lucky winter birders might even see a snowy owl* or a golden eagle who has migrated down from Canada to overwinter in Virginia. Anywhere there is scrub brush where birds can eat and hide from a predator, you’ll see birds. Even Virginia's most urban locations have birds to enjoy! A few recommendations for winter viewing are: cardinals, blue jays, dark-eyed juncos, American goldfinches, bellied sapsuckers, tufted titmice, white-throated sparrows, American robins, bald eagles, sharp-shinned hawks, and red-tailed hawks. *Snowy owls aren't present this far south every year--only during irruptions when they leave their northern range. If you want to see a snowy owl, follow birding news so you know when they are coming and visit the eastern parts of the state where they migrate along the coast. Thanks to VCE Master Gardener Program for the share.

Our Story

We design gorgeous weddings, using our own locally grown flowers. Beautiful, full wedding designs using unique organic flowers. Wildflower look, rustic, natural mountain weddings can be yours for a fraction of the cost. DIY brides may buy flowers direct in bulk (bucketfuls).

We manage over 100 acres as conservation lands; developing and maintaining wildlife habitat. We plan to leave the farm more natural than how we found it. We are committed to cultivating the flowers and foliage we use. Foraging only invasive plants. We do not believe in wild collecting or crafting in this era of human history.

We work long hours to to deliver perfectly fresh unique mountain flowers. Susan and Brent are directly involved in every design and flower cut from Shady Grove Gardens.

On the other hand, if you want roses for your wedding, we will get you roses. We want happy brides and we love working on small weddings that use lots of our flowers.
