It’s mission is to present the finest new Vietnamese music throughout Vietnam and represent Vietnam to international audiences. s participation in the 2010 Ascending Dragon Cultural Exchange and Music Festival, the largest cultural exchange in history between the United States and Vietnam. Southwest Chamber Music (Los Angeles) produced the exchange with the support of the U.S. In 2015, Southwest Chamber Music’s artistic director and conductor Jeff von der Schmidt, and executive director Jan Karlin, were appointed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture to become the first American artistic advisors to Vietnam and the Hanoi New Music Ensemble. The Hanoi New Music Ensemble performs in Hanoi at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Manzi Hanoi, Institut Français de Hanoi – L’Espace, the Goethe Institute Hanoi and the Heritage Space.. The members of the ensemble are amongst the nation’s finest professional musicians and teachers, serving as professors at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and also performing with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. HANOI NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE LEADERS —
Vu Nhat Tan, artistic director, has been described by Wall Street Journal Asia as “ready to take his place on the world stage.” His compositions have been performed in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He is the Chair of Composition at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Pham Truong Son, executive director, is one of Vietnam’s leading violinists and a professor at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. He studied in Norway and has led his Song Hong chamber music ensemble in tours to the U.S., China, Indonesia and Thailand. Tran Kim Ngoc, special projects director, has presented her compositions in the U.S., Europe and Asia. She also directs Dom Dom, an experimental music organization that presents festivals and collaborations as well as classes for music students of all ages. Nguyen QuocBao, operations director, is the Chair of Winds, Brass and Percussion at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. A leading clarinetist in Vietnam, he performs regularly with many ensembles throughout the country. Jeff von der Schmidt, conductor and artistic advisor, is a Grammy® Award-winning conductor who founded and leads the LA International New Music Festival and Southwest Chamber Music in Los Angeles, California. Jan Karlin, artistic advisor, is a Grammy® Award-winning musician and producer. She is the founding executive director of the LA International New Music Festival and Southwest Chamber Music in Los Angeles, California. The HANOI NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE is comprised of 15 professional musicians who play violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and other instruments as determined by the repertory of each program. They are teachers and members of Vietnam’s most prestigious teaching and performing institutions.
