Jazz at Johnstown: Mark Redmond and Chris Colloton Trio play The Táin
8 p.m. Johnstown Castle

One of the musical highlights of the Festival this year. Jazz at Johnstown again brings together jazz and Irish trad to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the seminal Horslips album, The Táin, with a few additions from other sources such as The Book of Invasions. Wexford piper Mark Redmond will join Jazz at Johnstown frequent headliners, the Chris Colloton Trio. The coming together of these great musicians will demonstrate how both trad and jazz can easily incorporate aspects of each other into a stunning fusion of improvisational brilliance. Mark has toured globally as a soloist and ensemble musician. This is a one-off occasion to see these four eminent musicians playing a classic from the Irish repertoire as an ensemble. (Supported by Night Time Economy Unit in the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.)

Jazz-Trad Blast: Sat, Nov 04 at 8 p.m.

After the three weeks of day to day activity, the Wexford Arts Festival comes to a close this weekend, not with a whimper but with a jazz-trad blast at Johnstown Castle.
One of Ireland’s best pipers, Wexford’s own Mark Redmond, joins forces with the Christ Colloton Trio in a special Arts Festival finale concert on Saturday at Johnstown Castle.
With a nod to Wexford hosting the Fleadh next year, this concert is a fusion of jazz and Irish traditional music and will celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of The Tain by Horslips.
This is a unique occasion to see Mark, who tours globally as a soloist and ensemble musician, and the Chris Colloton Trio headline the Jazz at Johnstown autumn series, which has already featured concerts by Jean Toussaint and Cormac Kenevey.

Mark Redmond/Chris Colloton Trio

On Saturday, November 04, Jazz at Johnstown brings together again one of Ireland’s best pipers, Mark Redmond, and the brilliant Chris Colloton Trio for a night of Irish trad-jazz fusion.

When Mark and Chris played together at Jazz at Johnstown in June, the concert sold out quickly. They showed how both trad and jazz can easily incorporate aspects of each other into a stunning fusion of improvisational brilliance.

This is a rare occasion to see these four eminent musicians revisit a classic from the Irish repertoire, The Tain by Horslips, as an ensemble. Unmissable. Featuring Lorcan Byrne on drums and Tom Maxwell on keyboards.

Joining Cormac Kenevey at Jazz at Johnstown on October 20th is the superlative jazz pianist, Johnny Taylor. Johnny was born in London and studied classical piano and clarinet from a young age, playing in orchestras and gaining an ABRSM diploma in piano performance. Upon moving to Ireland, he became a music scholar at Trinity College and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 2006. After studying with a scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Johnny returned to Dublin and began playing jazz full time. Johnny has made several appearances at Jazz at Johnstown in recent years.

Due to demand, brilliant Dublin vocalist Cormac Kenevey and his trio are returning to Jazz at Johnstown for an evening of sultry cool autumnal jazz on October 20.

One of Ireland’s top jazz vocalists, Cormac’s first album This Is Living was quickly picked up and released by Alan Bates at the CANDID record label in London (home to Stacey Kent and Jamie Cullum).

And so began a career as a jazz singer with a string of critically acclaimed national and international appearances: his last evening performance at Jazz at Johnstown was in 2022. Cormac has always been busy on the international stage, including locations in London (Ronnie Scott's, Pizza Express) around Europe, and as far afield as Abu Dhabi and Mexico.

He has completed a Master’s Degree in jazz performance, specialising in the art of vocalese and in the stylings of his eventual mentor, Mark Murphy. A big favourite at Jazz at Johnstown, Cormac will bring a superlative trio for this special Wexford Festival concert.

One of the best saxophonists in the world, Grammy Award-winner Jean Toussaint is Wexford-bound on September 27 for a special Jazz at Johnstown concert. Since he left Art Blakey’s famous Jazz Messengers in the mid-eighties, Jean hasn’t looked back. The experiences gained in that world-class hothouse have enabled him to push forward and embrace challenging, and often high profile, musical collaborations in many different jazz styles.

And what a super trio Jazz at Johnstown has assembled for this concert: Nigel Mooney on guitar, Dominic Mullan on drums and Scott Flanagan on organ. Nigel is widely regarded as Ireland's leading jazz singer and guitarist and was a headliner art the Jazz at Johnstown Festival in 2022.

Best Instrumentalist at the 2019 Jazz FM Awards, Jean Toussaint works out of London as a composer, tenor/soprano saxophonist, bandleader and highly regarded jazz conductor. Tickets on sale at Johnstown Castle.

One of the highlights of the recent Jazz at Johnstown Festival was the trad meets jazz revisiting of Horslips' The Tain with Mark Redmond, Chris Colloton, Lorcan Byrne and Killian Browne. We are working on a new commission for November..watch this space. Meanwhile, we are also preparing a busy programme of jazz from September to December, including a visit by Grammy award winning saxophonist Jean Toussaint, once a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The Jazz at Johnstown Festival took place once again on the grounds and estate of Johnstown Castle with three days of live music, from June 23 to June 25.
Opening on Friday night with a sold-out concert of jazz-trad fusion by piper Mark Redmond and the Chris Colloton Trio, the festival closed on Sunday afternoon with a visit by the Lee Meehan Quintet from Dublin.
An aspect of the festival’s programming is the mix both local and national acts: from Wexford were the Sharon Clancy Trio, also featuring Vicky Barron and Terry Byrne; Presto (Des O' Callaghan and Hayley Crosbie); the Melanie O’Reilly Quartet with Kevin Lawlor on drums; the Ivy Sisters (Sharon Clancy, Jilly Cox and Aileen Donohoe) and the opening night musicians, Lorcan Byrne, Mark Redmond and Chris Colloton, all from Wexford.
Some of Ireland’s best known jazz outfits featured throughout Saturday and Sunday, including the Carole Nelson Trio, with Carole on piano, bassist Cormac O'Brien and drummer Dominic Mullen; Gediminas Karkauskas and Adrian Jackson; the Dublin four-piece ÄTSCH; Pogo Bear with Daniel Rorke, saxophone, Cormac O’Brien, double bass and Shane O’Dononvan; the eight piece big-band inspired brass and stage ensemble, TBL8; singer Cormac Kenevey (with Dominic Mullan, Dave Redmond and Johnny Taylor) and the Lee Meehan Quintet featuring Lee on guitar, Shane O’Donovan on drums, Dave Redmond on bass, Darragh O’Kelly on keyboards and Michael Buckley on saxophone.
Undoubtedly, the two highlights of the festival, a recipient of the Small Arts Festivals and Experimental Art Events Grants Scheme 2023, were the evening concerts on Friday and Saturday, which sold out.
Making his debut at Jazz at Johnstown, Mark Redmond has toured globally as a soloist and ensemble musician and the Friday concert was a rare occasion to see him and the Chris Colloton Trio revisit a classic from the modern Irish repertoire, Horslips’ The Tain.
If ever a trio of musicians in contemporary Irish jazz warranted the description as a super group, bassist Barry Donohue, drummer Dominic Mullan and keyboardist Johnny Taylor fit the bill and they were the backing band behind one of the best jazz vocalists in the country, Stella Bass, making her Jazz at Johnstown debut. Since its inception in 2021, Jazz at Johnstown has brought over seventy musicians to Johnstown Castle
