International Women’s Day. March 8, and the Mimosa flowers.

Did you know?

It was Teresa Mattei, an Italian politician, and the National Director of the Italian’s women’s union who first introduced the flower as an emblem of women’s strength, sensibility, and sensitivity.

She chose the Mimosa because it’s a common plant throughout Italy, and one of very few that blooms before spring. So, not only did it represent the time of the year, but also what the women’s movement was all about: creating an environment in which women could thrive naturally and prosper. Perhaps even more significant is the fact that, despite its frail, delicate appearance, the Mimosa is actually a very resilient plant. It requires very little maintenance and can even survive droughts-quite symbolic of a strong, independent woman.
