Vetkoek or Amagwinya (Zulu name) is a delightful, typically South African snack. A traditional pastry both in Afrikaans and Zulu culture, it’s basically a mixture of flour, water, sugar and salt which is made into small balls and deep-fried until golden brown.

Umphokoqo African salad/dessert

Bring a pot of water to the boil, add maize meal and simmer for 45 minutes.
Add salt and stir continuously to prevent lumps. Simmer for approximately 45 minutes.
Use a fork to stir until crumbly, cover with a lid and simmer for an hour on low heat or until water has evaporated.
Serve with amasi.
