Next week Tuesday we host Brig Stanford of Blurry Lips for the first time! We stoked to have her for our last show of the year!

BLURRY LIPS
BLURRY LIPS offer something different to the local music scene with their rhythm-fuelled tracks designed to bop your head and lift your soul. Rock Fusion with some funk, blues and jazz inspirations, their catchy and compelling melodies are injecting new energy into the industry. Their songs strike a unique balance between intensity and subtlety, and the foot-tapping beats are impossible to resist. The band's secret weapon, however, is their lead singer Brig. Her silky voice, coupled with a rock fusion backdrop, transports listeners to a novel soundscape. Brig's vocals offer a beautiful contradiction, with their raw power being softened by a sultry undertone. Backed by a harmonious ensemble, she delivers a captivating performance that will leave you craving more.

JENNY & THE JAMESES

Jenny & the Jameses are back from a year long break to perform a handful of shows in and around Cape Town this winter. Jenny & the Jameses are a Celtic folk trio from Cape Town. The trio comprises Jennifer Eaves on vocals and guitar, James Hall on violin and vocals, and James Harvey on accordion and vocals. How lucky we are at False Bay Folk to host the stunning Shotgun Tori for the first time on the 4th of July! We are delighted to have her share her stories and songs with us 😄🎶

🔴WE ARE FULLY BOOKED🔴

SHOTGUN TORI

Shotgun Tori is an indie folk singer/songwriter who believes that stories are to be shared and not left to wither quietly. She sings compelling songs about the often excruciatingly funny and mostly beautiful experience of living. Having toured the length and breadth of South Africa (with some shows in Namibia, Mozambique, London and Amsterdam for good measure), she is known for her engaging performances - sincere, light, immersed and invested. Her voice is intoxicating and memorably skillful. It is loose and playful and intensely lovely.
"Shotgun Tori - A little bit of folk; a little bit of country; a whole lot of raspy cut-to-the-heart feeling - Rolling Stone (S.A)"

We can’t wait to have the brilliant Wren Hinds with us next week Tuesday 😍

WREN HINDS

Hailing from the South-east coast of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Wren Hinds grew up with a musician for a father and a landscape painter for a mother. As a kid, watching his dad recording and overdubbing inspired Wren to keep a tape recorder with him, recording whatever and wherever he could. Later, he would compare the layering of instruments and textures to the mediums and paints of his mother’s chosen artform. For Wren, songwriting became “painting with sound”, using light, shade and a sense of space to communicate powerful impressions and feelings.
Wren brought this schooling to gorgeous fruition across his first three albums, initially available on Bandcamp and now released on vinyl through Bella Union Private Pressings. Made with an eco-friendly manufacturing company, each record is available as a special edition limited to 200 copies, available through mail order and the Bella Union store. Either way, the trilogy plots the growth curve of a major talent, released in readiness for the now Bella Union-signed artist’s incoming fourth album. The first of the three retroactive releases will be “A Child’s Chant For The New Millennium”.
Wren Hinds brought fresh thematic cogency to his third album, recorded in early 2020. The linking matter is his unerring ability to apply himself to each new situation, in this case a longing for connection – to humanity, nature – in a world tilted towards digital disconnection. While the lockdowns intensified the album’s dystopian fears, the beauty and artistry in Wren’s songcraft counterpoint the shadows eloquently.

We are one week away from our May show happening on Tuesday the 2nd and we are so stoked to have the rad Mel Malisch perform for a second time on the False Bay Folk stage 🤩

MEL MALISCH

Hi, my name is Mel… I’m a song writing mom of two from Kommetjie.
I grew up playing classical piano and started playing the guitar about a decade ago, but songwriting has came much more recently… I am inspired by all kinds of things; things I’ve experienced like grief and love, and sometimes merely just things I’ve observed that have sparked an idea…
I have been fortunate enough to record five songs which will release as singles over the coming months. I believe the stories are relevant and relatable, and I am excited to share them so that the narrative might resonate for those who chose to listen.

How wonderful it is to have Dave Starke back with us on Tuesday evening! 🤩Bookings close Monday evening - best secure your seat before then🎶

DAVE STARKE

Dave Starke is a Folk singer-songwriter. His creative process is based on “lived art” which entails moving purposefully through life, grappling with the obstacles that arise and then turning them into songs. A native Capetonian, Dave left the mother city in his 20s to pursue a career as a history teacher in rural Zululand, where he still lives. He took the leap into working full-time as a musician in 2018 and has since released two albums, Duende and Shifting Boundaries. When it comes to performances, Dave is a staunch minimalist known for his delicate guitar technique, warm baritone voice and judicious use of whistling.
Career highlights include two semi-final placings in the UK Song Contest, composing the score for South African feature film The Killing Floor and, most recently, having some of his music used in the television adaptation of Recipes for Love and Murder which aired worldwide in 2022.
Dave is currently an MA student with a focus on how sustainability and ecosystemic theories can be applied as models for managing life as a self-employed performing artist.

We are thrilled to have Ashton Gardner perform on the False Bay Folk stage for the first time! Don't miss our show next week Tuesday the 4th of April😁🎶

ASHTON GARDNER
The 'musician's musician', mature singer-songwriter Ashton Gardner has a deep and diverse catalogue of original work.
Normally confined to a repertoire of familiar covers performed at various events and functions around Cape Town, including some stints' in the Middle East, False Bay Folk presents a rare local opportunity to exhibit his original material as a guitarist and pianist to an appreciative audience
As a producer Ashton has run a recording studio for a number of years producing both his own works and albums of several other artists.
His vocal range is vast and textured and compositional style varied, with echoes of artists like Sting, Crowded House, Coldplay, U2 and even a little Johnny Cash bleeding through. His music at times has an epic, even apocalyptic melodic and lyrical edge in them, often rich with chordal, rhythm and harmonic complexity.
Though his gorgeous originals will be the order of the evening, he is likely to sprinkle one or two of his favourite covers in as well.

It's a first for Gaëllou - performing on the False Bay Folk stage and we couldn't be more excited! 😁

Gaëllou

Gaëllou is a truly one-of-a-kind, South African singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/visual artist. Gaëllou is also the name of his band and new project.
The variation of his name originates from his very young years in France, where adding ‘ou’ makes a word a diminutive of the original, much like adding ‘tjie’ in Afrikaans. His aunt and grandmother called him Gaëllou and it stuck.
Although (fittingly) small in stature Gaëllou’s songs are massive. They tell stories through the music, based on his own experiences and the content of his poetry. Crunchy and thought-provoking his lyrics paint a picture of his life-long struggles with abuse and addiction and deal with them head-on, through discovery, hope and the promise of new beginnings. His aim is to give a voice and inspiration to others who have suffered similar battles.
Backing Gaëllou in his band are well known local musicians, Kathleen Eggers on strings, Willem Moller on lead guitar, Stephen Sheldon on bass and Derek Craig on percussion and drums. Gaëllou perform powerful acoustic and electric arrangements of their unique ‘folk-rock’ musical sound.

We are thrilled to have Terry Lloyd-Roberts and friends perform on the False Bay Folk stage next week 🎶It's great to have them back!

TERRY LLOYD-ROBERTS AND FRIENDS

Terry is an English and Drama teacher, moonlighting as a singer of songs she describes as ‘mostly melancholic, heart-wrenching and emotionally charged. The songs I choose to cover - and the ones I write - tend to be about the often turbulent territory of the heart,’ says Terry.
She covers diverse artists such as Amy Winehouse, Leonard Cohen, Lewis Capaldi and Damien Rice … ‘It’s all about the lyrics for me,’ she explains. ‘Songs that capture often raw emotional truths to which most of us can relate!’ Her own compositions tend to have a similarly intimate, reflective, confessional tone.
Terry’s backing band features some superb musicians: Keith Merrington on keyboards, Barbara Kennedy on cello and Debbie Rudman on backing vocals and percussion.

We are one week away and tickets are almost sold out! It’s been too long since we have had Sarah McArthur on the False Bay Folk stage and we are thrilled to have her kick off our first show of the year! 😁🎶

Sarah McArthur

Sarah McArthur is a songwriter and teacher based in Cape Town, South Africa. She has performed at a number of the premier live music venues in Cape Town, including the iconic Barleycorn Music Club, where she won their songwriting competition in 2016, placed in the top ten in 2017, came second in 2019 and won again in 2021.

With a deep affection for a clever lyric and a melancholic tune, she writes honest and raw songs that explore the things that we all experience in our relationships and in our lives. Her music is a heartfelt nod to indie acoustic folk, and blends delicate guitar work with authentic vocals.

Sarah is a keen collaborator and is happiest sharing the stage with other musicians. Over the last few years she has been privileged to play the keyboard for and record on the albums of Jon Shaban and Ruby June, and was most recently a part of bringing some much needed holiday cheer to the Cafe Roux 'Thank Folk it's Christmas' shows with the Misty Cliffs.
She has three EPs under her belt, her first produced by Wren Hinds and a second and third (to be released soon) produced by long-time collaborator Jon Shaban.

We are soooo looking forward to having the amazingly talented Ruby June next week Tuesday 🤩 Watch out for this rhythmic singer-songwriter ⚡

RUBY JUNE Soul-searching lyrics and upbeat melodies blend together to give you Ruby June, the singer-songwriter who loves surprising audiences with the great command she has over her voice and guitar. Able to play both gentle acoustic melodies and screaming rock solos, Ruby is no stranger to the South African music scene. Having played various festivals and venues in and around the country with her band, she focuses on improving her craft, stage presence, vocal ability and energy with every show.

Ruby has released an EP called “Reflect”, as well as a live album called “As Is”, which is an unapologetically raw reflection of her band’s sound. Ruby is excited to share that she has recently been branching out into new territory by writing some Afrikaans material, now performing in both in her mother tongues, English and Afrikaans. With influences ranging from South African legends like Karen Zoid and Freshlyground to international acts such as Jack Johnson and Norah Jones, expect the unexpected from this fresh upcoming talent.

One week away! 😍 You don't want to miss The Betsies bring out your country spirit and tapping feet on the 6th of December 🤠🎶

THE BETSIES

The Betsies is a country rock ‘n roll folkie bluegrass h***y tonk langarm hillbilly band from Cape Town. Sisters, Landi Degenaar(banjo and vocals) and Zelmari Degenaar(acoustic guitar and vocals), started this band a long time ago, and over the last couple of years, they were lucky to find three talented country loving guys to join them, that fit the music perfectly. With Paul Avenant (drums and percussion), Geriant Bojé (bass) and Christo Loots (electric guitar, fiddle and mandolin) they play the best mix of original songs and covers full of harmony, rhythm and rhyme.
