COME WALK/RUN IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MADIBA
February 8th, 2025 marks the 35th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Facility) and the walk to Freedom after 27 years of incarceration. To commemorate the event, the Drakenstein Correctional Services will host the 13th 27 for Freedom Race day at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility outside Paarl on the R301. For the serious runner, there is the scenic revised 27km run/walk (symbolic of the number of years spent in jail by the former president), or the 10km run/walk or the Freedom Route (5km). The day promises to be a family fun day of sports, history and entertainment. You will walk/run along the same route that was taken by Madiba as he left prison, from the Madiba House, Long Walk to Freedom, to the Madiba Statue at the entrance of the Correctional Facility. 2025 will be the 12th anniversary of the death of late President Nelson Mandela.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗮

February the 11th marks the 35th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s historic release from the Victor Verster Prison (now the Drakenstein Correctional Centre) outside Paarl and his walk to freedom following 27 years of incarceration.

To commemorate the event, the Department of Correctional Services in Drakenstein will be hosting the 13th version of the 27 for Freedom Race at the Drakenstein Correctional Centre on the R301 on Saturday, 8 February 2025.

For the serious runner or walker, there is the scenic 27km run or walk (symbolic of the number of years the former President spent behind bars). For a more relaxed experience, participants can opt for either the 10km run or walk, or the Freedom Route Walk or Run (5 km).

The day promises to be a family fun day of sports, history and entertainment. You will walk or run along the same route that Madiba took as he left prison, from the Madiba House, Long Walk to Freedom, to the Madiba Statue at the entrance to the Correctional Centre. This year will also be the 12th anniversary of the death of the late President.

The 27km race starts at 06:30, the 10km at 07:00, and the 5km at 08:30. Cut-off time for all the races is 10:30. There will be lucky draws and medals for all finishers. Closing date for entries is 29 January 2025.
