Petronel Nieuwoudt Nominated for the 2025 Indianapolis Prize: The ‘Nobel Prize’ in Animal Conservation

With just a few days until World Rhino Day, Care for Wild is deeply honoured and humbled to announce that our Founder and CEO, Petronel Nieuwoudt, has been officially nominated for the prestigious 2025 Indianapolis Prize – the world’s leading award in animal conservation.

This nomination recognises Petronel’s tireless dedication over more than a decade to the rescue, rehabilitation, and protection of both white rhinos and critically endangered black rhinos. Her work has been instrumental in securing protected breeding populations, ensuring the long-term survival of these iconic species as well as the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Through her leadership at Care for Wild, Petronel has created a sustainable conservation model that not only protects endangered wildlife but also educates, employs, and empowers local communities to become custodians of their heritage, ensuring a future for both wildlife and people.

The Indianapolis Prize highlights the extraordinary achievements of conservationists like Petronel, whose work has had a lasting, positive impact on endangered species, biodiversity and generations to come.
