THE OBSERVATORY MUSEUM

"The small colonial museum, opened in 1982, is inviting and leaves one interested enough to wander around and imagine how the people of well over a century ago lived. The museum is situated within a house that was originally a 19th-century jeweller's shop and family home. It now serves as a replica of the past, with a dining room and lounge open for public viewing. Some of the images found there give a different spin to the notion of a room with a view.

The museum contains a Camera Obscura (1882), the only one built in the Southern Hemisphere. The word 'Camera Obscura' refers to a small round building with rotating angled mirror at the apex of the roof projecting an image of the landscape onto a horizontal surface inside.

The impressive Camera Obscura, known as 'the eye in the sky', is able to navigate the entire town, providing a bird's eye view from North to South and East to West. The camera is able to show, in live-time, the mirror image transfer of the town."
