CLIENT – That’s too expensive for this job!
ME – How much you think it should cost?

CLIENT – R800 max! It’s a simple job!
ME – I can’t do the job for so little.

CLIENT – People in your line of work want to make a huge profit!
ME – I’m sorry you feel this way. Why don’t you do the job?

CLIENT – But, but, I don’t know how to do any of that.
ME – For R900, I can teach you everything you need to know to do the job. You can then use R800 to do the job, and you’re still saving R1,100. Also, you will obtain all the knowledge and the experience for the next time you need to do this job.

CLIENT – Deal!
ME – Great! To start, you need to buy tools. You will need a chipping hammer, a nail gun, a laser, a drill, PPE, and some other things.

CLIENT – But, I don’t have any of those tools and I can’t buy all that for just one job!
ME – Ok. I can rent you my tools for another R300. You’re still saving R800.

CLIENT – That’s cutting my savings, but I will rent your tools.
ME – Perfect! I’ll be back Saturday and we can start.

CLIENT – Wait! I can’t Saturday. I only have time today.
ME – I’m sorry, I only teach others on Saturdays. I have to prioritize my time and my tools needs to be in other jobs I have during the week.

CLIENT – Ok then. I will sacrifice my family’s plans on Saturday.
ME – Right, me too! Oh, I forgot. If you’re going to do the job yourself, you need to buy the materials. There’s a high demand nowadays, so your best bet is to get a bakkie and be at the hardware store by 7am before other contractors get there.

CLIENT – AT SEVEN IN THE MORNING? On Saturday? That’s too early for me. I don’t even have a bakkie!
ME – I guess you’ll have to rent one. By the way, do you have some helpers to help you load the truck?

CLIENT – You know what? I’ve been thinking. Probably is better for you to do the job. It’s better to pay you to do the job right and not having to go through all that hassle.
ME – Good thinking. Sign here and let me get to work.

This is the truth. People are not just paying for a job, they are paying for knowledge, experience, tools / equipment, time, family sacrifices, and other things you bring to the table. Don’t let anybody dictate your worth!

The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.

Running a business is really hard.

What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.

People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.

Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.

You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work-life balance.

You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All while being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend...

There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed.

It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.

Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives.

Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!

And know that 2022 prices are not 2023 prices.

Parent Connect Term 2

We are very excited to be hosting another Parent Connect this term. After the success of the first talk with Dr Penelope Alison in term 1 about “Planting Seeds of Connectivity” we will be hosting local GP’s Dr Dale Thomas and Dr Len de Kraamer on Thursday 20 June.

Dr Dale Thomas will hold the morning session from 8:00 - 9:00 talking about “The Power of Self Care: Nurturing Parents of Young Children”.

Dr Len de Kraamer will hold the evening session from 18:00 - 19:00 with his talk titled “Understanding ADHD”.

Entrance will be R20. Tea, coffee and a treat 🍩 will be served.

Invite your friends and neighbour to join you. These are two talks you are not going to want to miss.
