We're deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Sizakele Beauty "Sis B" Nkabinde.

Sis B worked at The Tin Town Theatre NPC from its inception in 2019, until its closure in 2022.

We remember Mam'Nkabinde as someone who was warm, loving, and compassionate for theatre and artists. Beauty worked for various organizations within the arts sector including Gauteng Opera, The Tin Town Theatre, and Arts & Culture Trust.

Mrs. Nkabinde was our cleaning supervisor at TTT, but she always made time to support the independent theatre works we put up in the space. This was always her response whenever she was invited to a show in the theatre; "I don't accept complimentary tickets; what you guys do (theatre) is not cheap".

We are gutted by this loss and wish to extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

Funeral Arrangements:

"You cannot take this satirical piece on if you are not a true shapeshifter because these women are a band of Chameleons. Something about Text Me When You Arrive is undeniably old school poor theatre from Joburg. It's minimalistic but not simple, it offers a plethora of scenarios that immerse you in the times, it is physically demanding and you will not want for striking characters and characterisation. This style is the legacy of pieces such as Waiting for Godot and Woza. The use of repetition, song, humor, the glaring futility of the efforts these women make, the dwindling hope these women have, the necessity of the play's existence and the undeniably important subject matter. Something urgent and meaningful has been made here. I believe we are witnessing a moment in South African Theatre." Sisekho Velelo

Text Me When You Arrive runs at The Tin Town Theatre until Sunday the 28th of August.

The Tin Town Theatre brings you the Naledi Nominated "Text Me When You Arrive." A fitting way to close off this Women's Month. This peice is light hearted in its approach to difficult topics.

Directed by Sinenhlanhla Mgeyi and carefully crafted by Aaliyah Matintela, Sibahle Mangena and Thuli Nduvane under the mentorship of MoMo Matsunyane is a peice that is engaging and necessary, a peice that is of the times without being pretentious.

Even the title speaks to the measures that women take to secure their safety on the daily. The title and the play echo their fears and shines the light on how women are teathered to a sisterhood that tries to keeps us alive in a world that has declared war on us. Alot of women are numb with GBV fatigue this month. Well, here is a peice that dares to communicate what you are too tired to tweet about today, too tired to March about today and too tired to articulate today. Let Text Me When You Arrive take the baton and speak in silence.

STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

****KUYENYUKA VENUE CHANGE****

New Venue: National School Of The Arts.
NB* Your online tickets will still be valid at NSA.

Dear Tin Town Theatre Patrons

We regret to inform you that tonight's run of Kuyenyuka will be staged at the National School of the Arts. This change is due to an unplanned power outage that began just before Midnight on the 21st of July. Power was only restored around 21h00 on the 22nd of July after Joburg City Power started promising repairs at 09h00 on the 22nd.

The irony of finding ourselves unable to assist independent artists as a result of another government failure when we exist as a result of their failures is not lost on us. The show did go on last night and will go on tonight but unfortunately, not on our stages. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We wish Vuyelwa Phota and the Kuyenyuka team all the best with their run this evening.

Kuyenyuka is a Xhosa word that means “There is an incline”. This word is the banner that sits over Vuyelwa Phota’s dance piece which positions life as the incline and explores our journey and the various loads we carry as we scale up the mountain that is life. It zooms in on what happens to us as these loads get heavier. This piece poses existential questions about why we climb, why we choose to burden ourselves along the way and the value of those burdens once we reach the mountain top. Kuyenyuka also explores how we view those who climb beside us and our tendency to other ourselves as we respectively fight for individuality while aiming to remind us through the mum medium of movement that the ways in which we suffer under these loads essentially make us more alike than we realise.

Tonight the Tin Town Theatre attended the Naledi Award Nominations reveal and we are proud to announce that we recieved four nominations for a play that is very close to our hearts.

Our journey with this play, this very special playwright and this cast has been a long one purely driven by passion and a love for theatre. We started with a modest little reading in 2019. The most uncertain times followed and today Khutjo Green's The Princesses Of Askies Shem Street gets it's moment in the sun with nominations in the following categories:

Best Director of a Play- Khutjo Green
Best Supporting Actor in a Play -Tshireletso Nkoane
Best New Script- The Princesses of Askies Shem Street
Best Production of a Play- The Princesses of Askies Shem Street produced by The Tin Town Theatre NPC.

The Tin Town Theatre is proud to have produced this important work in these incredibly trying times. This is a monumental moment for us specifically because we achieved it with inimitable Khutjo Green, a black female playwright with a lot to say.

We are thankful to the Naledi Theatre Awards for this nod. Finally, there are not enough words to express our boundless gratitude to the fearless founder, the one and only Marcus Tebogo Desando for giving us the opportunity to see these visions through, our young vibrant and cool Resident Creative Director Sisekho Velelo and not ever forgetting our insightful visionary the Artistic Director Tshepo Samuel Ratona.

This is the beginning, there will be many more.
