Spearheading the sustainability movement in the design and graphics department at ExpoGuys is 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗞𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗸, whose passion for eco-friendly practices extends beyond the workplace. Together with his team, De Klerk employs several strategies to reduce waste and energy consumption while delivering high-quality solutions for clients.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀:
• Eco-Friendly Printing: The use of eco-solvent inks and low-power fabric printers significantly reduces harmful emissions and waste, contributing to a cleaner production process.
• Reusable Media: High-quality fabric banners and other printed materials are repurposed for multiple uses, such as creating bags and furniture covers, extending their lifecycle and reducing waste.
• Digital Design Efficiency: Advanced design software helps eliminate unnecessary paper usage. Designs are optimised to prioritise the use of existing factory materials, limiting the need for new production.
• Material Waste Reduction: Designs are tailored to the dimensions of boards and materials to minimise offcuts, yielding maximum material usage and ensuring a more efficient production process.

Using products and materials in ways apart from their conventional use i.e. pallet planks, plastic bottles and crates. De Klerk’s creativity also extends to repurposing materials, turning old media into furniture coverings or signage, further demonstrating the department’s commitment to sustainability

At the heart of ExpoGuys’ sustainability efforts lies their 5000-square-meter factory, which houses reusable materials for stand construction and event rentals. This focus on reusability aligns with the company’s commitment to extending the lifecycle of every product it uses.
Our 5000sqm facility is not an indication of our capacity, but rather our drive to keep items in an endeavour to ensure its increase in life cycle.
For example:
• 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿-𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The factory is primarily powered by solar energy, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
• 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: The company has significantly reduced waste output by improving material handling and recycling practices.
• 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Innovations in handling materials such as Perspex and acrylic have extended their usability, while off-cuts are repurposed or recycled.

Materials are graded based on their sustainability, with the overall stand receiving a 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿, or 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗺 certification.
For instance:
• Flooring options like carpet tiles and rubber mats, which can be reused for multiple events, receive the highest scores.
• LED lighting and modular aluminium structures contribute significantly to higher sustainability grades.
"This system not only raises awareness among clients but also challenges our designers and sales staff to think sustainably throughout the design and build process," Pooja Patel and Lindsay Milazi, two of our senior designers note. "It’s not an exact science, but it’s a step in the right direction."
The grading system also serves as an educational tool for clients, helping them understand the long-term cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of sustainable stand choices. Clients receive a certificate with a scorecard detailing the sustainability elements of their stand, reinforcing the importance of eco-friendly practices.
