🔙 Lythwood has a fascinating history!

In 1943, the POW camps were overflowing with Italian prisoners captured in the East and North Africa campaigns. Many of the prisoners were sent to work on farms due to the lack of space.

5 of them ended up at Lythwood. One of those men was Aquilino Avellini, a self-taught expert at wrought iron design. Avellini created Lythwood's magnificent wrought iron gates which are now at the top of the staircase leading to the Avellini tent, one of our stunning wedding venues. He also created chandeliers and various other finishing touches. All of his creations can be seen at Lythwood today 😲😀

Thanks to those 5 italian men, Lythwood was transformed from being just a building, to the unique, and gracious home that it is today 🏰

Aquilino lived at Lythwood for several years and remembers his time there fondly.

His brothers eventually came over from Italy to South Africa and they formed
the well-known KZN construction company “Avellini Brothers” 😱
