A story of History, Heritage & Beauty
The story that has been passed on from property owner to the next, is that Uitvlugt (the area where Renovatio River Estate is located) was named by a family who fled the Gauteng/Johannesburg area to escape the Anglo-Boer war. They settled and built their dwellings in 1883 in an area along the Suikerbos River due to the fresh water source and called their home “Uitvlugt” (a Dutch word that means 'to flee' or 'fled’).
The Uitvlugt farm was owned by a single farmer with 7 sons who one day decided to divide his farm into 7 parts giving each son a share of the family farm. Today Uitvlugt has been divided and sub-divided into many plots and farms in the Midvaal area. The original family farmhouse built in 1883 still stands and is located at Renovatio River Estate where it has been lovingly restored and renovated, the century old sandstone walls can still be found as well as the original wooden Oregon doors & windows that have been restored to its former glory. Certain parts of the venue walls have been left as they were originally built by the Farmer over 100 years ago. The farmer used clay, hay and dung as mortar. Strands of hay can still be seen in between the standstones.
An old unused concrete bridge built in the early 1900’s lies spanned across the Suikerbos River a stone’s throw from Renovatio. It is the last remains of an old route used in the 1900’s when Vereeniging was newly established as a small simple coal mining town and before the railway lines had been laid. At the time, the old cement bridge was the only way that travellers on horseback or using horse and carriages could safely cross over the Suikerbos River enroute to and from Vereeniging and Villiers. The route ran through Uitvlugt, over the concrete bridge and headed towards Vereeniging town. Today the bridge lies dormant as the R54 main was moved further down the river and now served as the main road for motorists travelling to the Vaal Dam and beyond.
Renovatio was awarded a 2019 Bronze Vaal Explorer Award in the Weddings Category and a 2019 Bronze Vaal Explorer Award in the Conference and Venues category.
