Orange isn't your typical wedding color—and if it does appear, it's usually reserved for bouquets and other floral elements. But the bold hue, which became popular in the 70s, is making a major comeback. Orange is often described as the color of creativity and joy, which proves that this shade is a very wedding-appropriate option. Beyond its symbolism, orange is also a color that is surprisingly complementary to many different wedding themes and venues.

Hot pink is paving the way at weddings!

For years, brides and grooms favoured neutral tones and natural colours for their wedding décor. Although metallics have commonly been used to add a bit of glamour and style to a table setting or reception venue, on the whole, couples have played it fairly safe when it comes to colour.

This year, with the Barbie movie being released, that’s all set to change as hot pink finds itself at the centre of a number of 2023 wedding trends. Eye-catching, stylish and not in the least bit subtle, hot pink is paving the way for ever bolder colour choices this wedding season. If you’re still finalising your wedding look and are thinking of using hot pink in your outfits or decorations, here are a few ideas for working the stunning tone into your big day.

Why pink?

Traditionally thought of as a more feminine colour, pink hasn’t always been a popular choice for couples looking to create a sophisticated or subtle look for their wedding venue. However, used well, the tone can be truly spectacular. As SJinc notes, ‘Pink is a colour of many talents. Depending on the shade you use, pink can be romantic, playful, elegant, and even edgy.’

Flowers

Hot pink flowers can look fantastic by themselves or as part of a larger arrangement. Use some roses, orchids, hydrangeas or gladioli to add an eye-catching accent to your bouquet or table settings and really bring your wedding décor alive. Talk to your florist about which flowers will be looking their best when you walk down the aisle.

Outfits

Although the bride herself may not want to get hitched in a hot pink gown, there’s a good chance that a number of wedding guests will turn up to the event wearing the eye-catching shade. According to the Independent, online searches for formal dresses in the colour are up a whopping 45% on last year, making it one of the most popular choices of the wedding season. Why not get ahead of the trend by choosing hot pink outfits for your bridesmaids? Or select some hot pink shoes or accessories for your outfit and give your look the perfect finish.

Food

These days, food is just as much a part of the look of a wedding as the décor. Use hot pink icing on your cake and dessert table to ensure every aspect of your wedding day reflects your theme. You could also ask your caterers to serve canapés with hot pink tones and drinks with a fuchsia tinge. Alternatively, simply place hot pink napkins or name cards on your tables to help tie your wedding theme together.

A bold and eye-catching choice for a stylish wedding, hot pink could help you give your big day the individuality you’re looking for. Get more ideas and inspiration for planning a unique and unforgettable wedding by exploring our site today.

Characterful cosy venues, roaring log fires, hearty comfort food and snowy photographs – it’s easy to see why winter weddings are growing in popularity in South Africa!

But what are the key things couples need to consider when planning a wedding in the colder months?

WHY GET MARRIED IN WINTER?

“Winter weddings are becoming more frequent in SA, especially with micro weddings, because the venues are characterful and cosy and the moody weather makes for stunning photographs – especially if couples are lucky enough to get snow on their wedding day,” SJ explained.

“There’s not really a ‘wedding season’ anymore,” said SJ.

“It doesn’t matter what season you get married in, unless you specifically want an outdoor wedding, which is always rather risky in SA. There are so many beautiful wedding venues now that the need to be outside isn’t as much of a desire. Winter weddings are the way forward.”

“Winter weddings work particularly well for smaller more intimate groups as you’ll already have a cosy atmosphere to start with. Hearty winter food, open fires, candles and character venues make winter weddings particularly special. Avoiding peak summer means not having to worry about sweating off a perfect face of makeup, and it’s also likely that you’ll save a bit of money, too.”

When choosing a winter wedding venue, find one that fits your theme. Often the venue’s décor provides much of the decoration, so all you need to do is work around the theme you’ve chosen, which makes the decoration process that little bit simpler.”

“From creating a winter wonderland, to opting for a simple romantic theme with candle lights everywhere, find the right decorations that truly works with your venue.

“Make sure you choose a venue with reliable heating so that your guests will be comfortable. It’s also a good idea to factor in the journey between the ceremony and the reception if they're not being held at the same venue, making sure you have transport organised well ahead of time.”

Christina said: “When choosing your venue, consider the surrounding area and its suitability for photos. What landmarks, parks, beautiful buildings and quirky locations would make great backdrops for your wedding photos, and where can you go if it’s raining?”

Work with the season just like you would work with the décor of the venue. For example, you could have a hot chocolate station, a mulled wine station, or, my personal favourite, serve amaretto with warmed apple juice. Bring the season into your wedding with the food and drink.”

Autumn and winter are all about hearty, hot comfort food, like a traditional roast. All good wedding venues will offer a tasting session so you can sample your wedding menu and make sure you’re happy with the dishes and wines.”

“Winter accessories are a must – such as a fur shawl, clear brolly, or velvet suit jacket for the groom. Not only do they add to the photos, they also proof against the weather, so don’t be afraid to accessorise!”

Remember to book an early wedding ceremony, otherwise you will run out of daylight. If you go for a 3pm ceremony the light will be gone by the time you get to the reception, so make sure you factor this in and allow time for photographs. A bonus is that with the sun setting earlier in the day, you can start your evening party that bit sooner, which means you have longer to enjoy it.”

Since the sun sets early, make sure your venue comes alive at night by decorating with candles, providing sparklers, lanterns, and fairy lights. They look beautiful in photos, too.”

Can you imagine yourself as a bride-to-be in a black dress? It goes against tradition because brides are known for their long, white wedding dresses. Ball gowns, floor-length veils, and silk gloves are classic looks.

So why is a black wedding dress suddenly a thing? The truth is that it isn’t, with the black wedding dress popular in Spain and historical that white dress only came into fashion with Queen Victoria leading the way in 1840. But credits go to iconic fashion houses like Valentino and Gucci to pushing tradition.

So, if you want to dress for your most important day according to the world fashion standard, you must have a little black (wedding) dress in your closet.

But why only keep your dark and dramatic color scheme to you and your entourage?
Pull the color through to the decor, cake and the rest of your wedding!

Why not? In addition to being a total hit this season, a black wedding dress gives you a lot of options when organizing your wedding. It’s an opportunity to come up with an interesting colour scheme.

Instead of choosing a typical gothic theme, be creative, and come up with something different. This dress allows you to be fashionable, elegant and romantic.

That’s the theme you should choose. For example, black will be a great canvas for any other colour, and details. It can be rose gold, white gold, or metallic.

10 Tips To Make The Most Of Your Hair & Makeup Trial

Not every bride will need, want, or care to have a hair or makeup trial, or indeed professionally styled hair or makeup on their wedding day, and that's perfectly okay.

But, maybe you're a bride who simply wants peace of mind? Knowing that hair and makeup are two items ticked off the list of things to worry about ahead of your wedding can be freeing. In that case, I'd highly recommend booking in a trial.

Having your very own glam squad on the morning of your wedding is fun and relaxing. And for me anyway, hugely confidence-boosting.

If you're someone who panics at the thought of having your makeup done by someone else, or is nervous about how your chosen hairstyle will work with your type of hair, then having a practice run will ensure you're happy with the pro you've chosen, and the look they're going to give you on your wedding day.

So, to help you make the most of your hair or makeup trials I've put together a bunch of tips. I've gathered advice from my own experience and my friends' own trials. Plus, I'm bending the ear of every hairstylist and makeup artist I meet!

1. Be Armed with Ideas (But, Not Too Many)

While I was sure on the hair front (I had a single screenshot from Instagram), I went to my own makeup trial with a folder on my phone filled with pictures of makeup ideas, and they were all a bit different from each other. It just left the makeup artist a bit confused about what I was looking for.

Likewise saying you're ‘fine with whatever they think' is equally frustrating to a professional who wants you to feel like you on your big way.

Take time to go through Pinterest or Instagram. Or, look to your favorite celebrities or beauty bloggers for a look you love. Bringing pictures will definitely help.

2. Bring Your Makeup Bag and Go-To Products

If you have products you love, you know work for you, or that last well on your skin or in your hair, bring them along with you.

Your stylist might not choose to use them. But, it will be helpful for them when they're selecting tones or figuring out what's best to use for your hair or skin type.

Lipstick in particular is something you'll be topping up throughout your wedding day. So, it's helpful to have one you already own or will buy for your big day, so you can freshen up afterward.

As for your hair, if you have them, bring your hair accessories or veil with you too.

3. Not All ‘Naturals' Are Created Equally

Your idea of ‘natural beachy waves' or ‘natural makeup' might be very different from your hairstylist or makeup artist's idea.

One hairstylist I spoke to, said that when brides say they want ‘beachy hair' they really want more of a Hollywood wave, but are terrified of ending up with tight curls. Again, this is why it's so important to bring visual aids to show exactly what you mean when you say ‘natural'

For example, you wanted ‘natural' wedding makeup. But, by the end of your trial, You were asking your makeup artist to load on even more false lashes.

4. Budget It In

Many brides are shocked at the price of hair and makeup trials and often forget to factor them in while planning their beauty budget. Especially, if they end up having more than one or two.

Before you book, ask any potential hair and makeup artists about their trial prices and their wedding prices. This way you can definitely afford them for the big day if you love their work.

Also, be sure to ask them how much time they allow for a hair trial. Many only leave time to complete one look, leaving brides disappointed if they were hoping to try out several different styles.

5. Ask About Pre-Trial Prep

Depending on what you're having done, and how long your stylist or artist has, you may need to come with your hair or skin prepped a certain way. For example, hair freshly washed or a day old, untouched skin or moisturized an hour in advance.

You'll also want to replicate the real thing as closely as possible. So, if you're planning to have a spray tan or tinted brows, try to have that done ahead of your trial too.

Likewise, try to have your hair about the length and condition it will be on the day. You don't want newly cut bangs and bleached hair on your wedding morning to throw off your hairstylist!

6. Replicate Your Dress Colour & Neckline

This might seem silly, but if you're wearing a white or off-white wedding dress, try to wear a similar color to your makeup trial.

This way you can see how your complexion looks and photographs against white (not always the most forgiving color!).

And for your hair trial, attempt to replicate the neckline of your dress. Whether it's backless, strapless or off-the-shoulder – it will give you a better idea of how your hairstyle will look and sit on the day. You'll ensure you're showing off your gown at its best.

7. Take Note of the Timings

A friend of mine said her makeup artist was really slow at the trial, but figured she'd be more prompt on the day. She ended up holding things up on the morning of the wedding. In the end, the bride and her bridesmaids were 40 minutes late to the church (and pretty stressed!).

Take note of how long your hair and makeup take during your trial. Talk to your stylist about timings on the day to make sure you allocate enough time for everyone in your pre-wedding prep gang to have their hair and makeup done. You'll want time to spare for any last-minute mishaps.

8. Ask Lots of Questions

Make the most of your hair or makeup trial by asking your hairstylist or makeup artist lots of questions. Ask for tips, get the products they're using. And, find out how you can better prep your hair and skin for your big day. Inquire if there are some products you should invest in for freshening up throughout the day.

Likewise, make sure you ask them everything you need about logistics for the day. Find out how much space they'll need, and what lighting they should have. Ask how they accept payment and how much time they'll spend between you and your bridal party or family, etc.

Take your chance to ask all the questions you can so you don't need to chase them up afterward.

9. Be Honest (Probably the most important point)

If you don't like what they do, tell them.

The whole point of a hair or makeup trial is to try out a look. That way you can make tweaks before your wedding day. Things like fuller brows, a different lip color, or looser up-style, can easily be fixed while you're at your trial.

If the problem is something more significant like poor quality products, the wrong foundation color, bad service or the makeup artist or hairstylist simply not listening to what you want, it's probably best to take the hit. Consider it money well spent on a mishap avoided, and book in another trial with someone new.

10. Make Plans for Afterwards

I've added this final tip for two reasons.

One: you'll look gorgeous! So, make the most of your pro-styled hair or makeup. Go out dancing, get some cocktails or plan a special date night.

And two: giving your hair and makeup a proper test run means you can see how it wears over the course of a day or night. You can check how it looks in photographs. Plus, test and tweak any of the products you may need for longevity.

I’ve heard it SO many times, “Oh the venue coordinator will handle everything, I don’t need a wedding planner.”

Words by Sandra Jacobs from SJ inc.

What most brides don’t quite understand is that the venue coordinator is just there for the VENUE, not you. (Nothing against venue coordinators – I love them and they’ve helped me out a lot before!) If they tell you they can handle things on the day of your wedding, it’s true – they can, but it’s only within a certain scope. And so, since I’m kind of the person who says things about planning weddings that not many other bloggers will, let’s chat a little more about this…

A venue coordinator is looking out for the best interest of the venue. A wedding planner looks out for the best interest of YOU, the bride.

The venue coordinator deals with everything having to do with the venue – food, setup, etc. A wedding planner will deal with aspects of the venue, such as setup, and will make sure everything is to your specifications. If your ceremony is at a location other than the venue, your wedding planner will be there with you. A venue coordinator will not be at that offsite ceremony. If the ceremony is at the venue, the venue coordinator will be there to help with the coordination of the ceremony.

A wedding planner stays by your side throughout your Big Day and the night of. They are there to tell you when things will be occurring throughout the night, such as the cake cutting, bouquet toss, toasts, etc. When I was planning, I stayed until the very end of the wedding, until all of the guests were gone. A venue coordinator stays until the meal is served, and the majority of the time, leaves after. Some may stay until the cake is cut and served. He or she will not be by your side throughout the day or night. Although the venue coordinator will do their best to keep you happy, he or she likely will not be involved if your bustle breaks, when it comes time to load up your gifts, or tracking down your lip gloss.

A wedding planner contacts your vendors before your wedding to make sure everyone is confirmed and knows what time they will be arriving. A venue coordinator may contact vendors that have to do with setup of the reception, but it’s not common. Other vendors, like your photographer or hair and makeup, would not be contacted by your venue coordinator.

Venues are known to have a high turnover rate among the coordinator/sales positions. The person that you book your wedding with, may or may not still be there when it comes time for your wedding a year, year and a half later. Your wedding planner is hired by YOU, hand selected by YOU, and won’t be going anywhere (unless, God forbid, something horrible happens!).

These are just a few things to inspire some thinking when it comes to deciding whether or not you need a wedding planner. This is in no way intended badly towards venue coordinators… as I said before, I LOVE venue coordinators – it’s always awesome to work with them! I just want you all to be aware of the differences between the two so you can make the best decision!
