#7 - Tayla Morgan Steedman

After many years of studying and fulfilling her dream of becoming a medical doctor, and having worked through a challenging global pandemic, Tayla Steedman decided to reignite her passion for creating art as a means of catharsis. She is enamoured with life (and death) experiences, dreams, and objective thinking.

Her artist alter-ego, The Surreal Amateur, creates original Linocut artworks, hand-printed using an etching press in limited editions. Carving, inking, and pressing the linoleum blocks encompass her self-taught artistic process, resulting in each print being an original and unique piece of art. She enjoys showcasing detailed imagery, mainly in black and white, to symbolise dualities such as light and dark, life and death, or good and evil.

#6 - Zhi Zulu

Zinhle Zulu, aka ‘Zhi Zulu’ is an illustrator, lecturer and cultural visual story-teller based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Visual Communication at the Open Window Institute and her Masters of Art in Design at the University of Johannesburg.

Zhi has since won a Gold-craft Loerie award for illustration, and was part of Design Indaba's creative class of 2019. Ahe has participated in notable exhibitions, including the Turbine Art Fair (2019-2022) represented by David Krut Projects. She has also exhibited at Gallery 2, GalleryOne11, No End Contemporary Art Space, NOW gallery and the ABSA experience gallery. Zhi has also represented South Africa at the Semerang International Illustration festival.

Notable, Zhi has collaborated with various clients such as Absolut Vodka, Levis, Constitution Hill, Wanderland Collective, E-coffee cup and most recently FlySafair, has also designed the new South African 20c coin.

Currently, Zhi runs an illustration studio called Vix & Zhi alongside her talented partner (and one of our other incredible artists) Vix Venter. Zhi is a lecturer and illustration researcher who is particularly interested in representation in our newly democratic South Africa. "I believe it is important for creatives to explore the newness in how Africa is portrayed."

Zhi's work will be on display and in our production of The Pillowman at Theatre on the Square!

#5 - Bianca Stöckel aka Stockel Tattoos

Meet Bianca - a traditional artist since 2014, specializing in realistic pen and pencil drawings. For the last three years, Bianca has worked full-time as a professional tattoo artist, specialising in illustrative black and grey.

As her tattoo journey progressed, she developed a love for digital art, and has been experimenting more with different styles, mediums, subject matters and techniques. Lately, she's been adding surreal twists to her work and exploring more expressive sketches, loose patterns, and textures, stepping away from her usual smooth and realistic approach, truly taking her time to enjoy the creative process.

Bianca is drawn to the darker side of art, with gothic and moody elements often making their way into both her artwork and custom tattoos.

Currently, you can see some of Bianca's incredible work on exhibit at Millard Art Gallery in Johannesburg, and from 18 February - 2 March, Bianca's work will be on display and in our production of The Pillowman at Theatre on the Square!

#4 - Loraine Wheeler

Loraine Wheeler, known professionally as The Etceterist - Design and Illustration, has been a multimedia illustrator and designer for almost 20 years. She specialises in portraits but has illustrated books, designed graphics for various companies, and made costumes and props for productions and events. She enjoys branching out and finding new ways to create and is excited to join The Pillowman production artist team to help bring it to the stage.

#3 - Ancois van Tonder aka A In Art

A in Art is created by fine artist Ançois (pronounced like François without the fr). She is a mostly self-taught artist who enjoys experimenting with oil pastels. From using turpentine in her sketches to ‘breaking the rules’ in the name of creativity, Ancois believes in experimentation. Though her preferred medium is oil pastels, she often indulges in using various types of pencils and charcoal.

"I see art as a form of therapy, a way to express one's identity, emotions, and experiences. I draw inspiration from my own life and create art that conveys emotions through different subjects."

#2 - Tanya Booyzen (Little Raven's Tiny Treasures)

Our little Raven is a Market Researcher, but by night she designs characters, illustrates stories and makes tiny treasures. She lives in Pretoria with her husband and two fur babies. She mostly works in traditional watercolour, but is starting to venture into creating digital art. She enjoys reading, watching movies and series, and playing boardgames, all of which serve as inspiration for her art.

Little Raven's love of books and art come together in our Production of The Pillowman at Theatre on the Square this February. You can check out her art on stage, or during our pre- and post-show art exhibition in the Theatre on the Square foyer from 18 February - 2 March.

Vix is a versatile digital and traditional illustrator who draws on personal experiences to craft surreal, detailed artworks that evoke emotional connections. Her work has involved book covers, 2D character designs, editorial illustrations, and concept art. She's worked with clients such as Wimpy, The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, STEPi, Macmillan Education, BK Publishing, Endangered Poet Productions, and more.

🎭 DOES THE SHOW HAVE AN AGE RESTRICTION? 🎭

YES. The Pillowman is a brilliantly dark comedy that tackles some rather dark themes. Please be advised that we will not admit people under the age of 16.
