For immediate release (19 July 2024)
SALA CELEBRATES 19 YEARS OF ADVANCING OUR LITERARY HERITAGE:
THE 2024 ADJUDICATION PROCESS COMMENCES
After five months of an open Call for Submissions season for the 19th edition of
South African Literary Awards (SALA), the adjudication process of scores of
submitted books has started in earnest.
The completion of the adjudication process by between 30 and 35 seasoned judges
will yield a short list of nominees from whom ultimate winners will emerge and
announced at the Awards handover ceremony on 7 November 2024, at a venue still
to be confirmed.
On the same day and venue, preceding this Awards ceremony will be the 12th Africa
Century International African Writers Conference, both celebrating the 33rd
anniversary of the African Union-declared International African Writers’ Day and 30
years of South Africa’s Freedom and Democracy.
The prestigious South African Literary Awards were founded in 2005 by the wRite
associates, in partnership with the national Department of Arts and Culture (now
Department of Sport, Arts and Culture), as a platform to honour authors, translators,
poets and other literary practitioners who made and continue to make a contribution
in the South African literary landscape. More than 300 wordsmiths have been
honoured over the last 18 years.
Morakabe Raks Seakhoa, Managing Director at wRite associates and SALA’s
founder Executive Director, is pleased with the massive impact SALA has had on
South Africa’s literary scene over the past 18 years. “We are pleased with the
consistency, growth and maturing of SALA across languages, generational, gender
and other social prisms”, Seakhoa says.
“The past 19 years have seen SALA recognise authors who have since soared
higher in their literary careers, leading to them being republished, invitations and
participation in literary events at home and abroad, some of their work optioned for
movies and theatre stages”.
Seakhoa is confident that this year’s adjudicators will, once again, select the best
literary offerings. “SALA always goes out of its way to source the best adjudicators
through literary and linguistic departments at institutions of higher learning, writers’
and literary translations experts and so on”.
The categories
SALA honours writing and writers in all official languages across 16 categories.
These are:
1. k. Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award
2. First-Time published writers are also acknowledged and honoured by the
Awards.
3. The Nadine Gordimer Short Story Literary Award, honouring thespians in the
genre, across all languages.
4. National Poet Laureate Prize
5. Poetry Award
6. Literary Translators Award
7. Lifetime Achievement Literary Award
8. Posthumous Literary Award
9. Literary Journalism Award
10.Creative Non-Fiction Award
11.Chairperson’s Award
12.Children’s Literature Award
13.Youth Literature Award
14.Novel Award
15.Regional Poet Laureate Prize
16.Local Poet Laureate Prize
As writers are given an equal opportunity to contest any of the Awards categories,
the winners over the years reflect that elevated state of South African literature,
which has seen some of the local works adapted to screen- and stage-plays.
A history of literary distinction
Some of the literary practitioners honoured in various categories over the years
include the current National Poet Laureate, Prof Mongane Wally Serote, the late
Nobel Laureate, Nadine Gordimer, multi-award winning novelist Kgebetli Moele,
literary journalists Phakama Mbonambi, Bongani Madondo and Sabata-Mpho
Mokae, poet Kobus Moolman, book critics Karabo Kgoleng and Jenny CrwysWilliams, activist, poet and author Ambassador Lindiwe Mabuza, short story writers
Makhosazana Xaba and Reneilwe Malatji, scholars and prolific writers Zakes Mda,
Njabulo Ndebele, Mbulelo Mzamane, Ashraaf Kagee, Nhlanhla Maake, Imraan
Coovadia, the late translator, poet, novelist and children’s writer Chris van Wyk;

TIMBUKTU NATIVE, MALI, AUTHOR & AGRICULTURAL ENGINEER, MR IBRAHIMA AYA, TO DELIVERS THE 11TH INTERNATIONAL AFRICAN WRITERS’ DAY LECTURE

Mr Ibrahima Aya, Timbuktu-born Malian author, editor, agronomist, co-founder and director of the literary festival Rentrée littéraire du Mali,.is set to deliver the 11th International African Writers’ Day Lecture, at the Africa Century International African Writers’ Conference on 7th November 2023 in Potcherstroom - North |West Province - South Africa.

The conference marks the 32nd anniversary of the OAU- (now-AU) declared International African Writers’ Day, and the theme of this year is: Decolonisation and Decoloniality: African Literary Return to the Source. Mr Ibrahima Aya lives in Bamako – Mali, where, alongside his literary and editorial activities, exercises his profession as an agronomist. He has notably published a number of book and has also participated in or co-directed several collective works including: Voix hautes pour Tombouctou, Le Mali entre doutes et espoirs, L’Afrique des laïcités, Le Mali contemporain. Mr Aya’s latest book, Le pays des éclipses, was published in 2021.

In 2011, Mr Aya created the “Bibliothèque des dédicaces” in Timbuktu to bring together books donated and autographed by their authors with the aim of combating intolerance by sharing knowledge and imagination. He is the co-founder and director of the "Rentrée littéraire du Mali", the literary event of reference in Mali, created in 2008. The event has now made Mali one of the major events for the celebration of literary and intellectual creation in Africa. The "Rentrée littéraire du Mali" is held every year in February and the 16th edition will take place from February 20 to 24, 2024 on the theme: Africa of living together.
Last year, (2022), the major theme of the 10th Africa Century International African Writers Conference (ACIAWC) was: Indigenous Knowledge and Decoloniality: The Role of Education, Arts, Culture, Heritage and Recreation in Rebuilding Resilience Post-Trauma and Into The Future, and it was delivered by Dr Nokugcina Mhlophe, actress, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author.

President Thabo Mbeki delivered the inaugural edition thereof in 2012, followed by Ms Samia Nkrumah, Prof Micere Mugo, Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Profs Mandla Makhanya, Zodwa Motsa and Kwesi Kwaa Prah, Prof Puleng LenkaBula, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of South Africa’ among the distinguished line of speakers and scholars.

The Africa Century International African Writers’ Conference aims to, as the then-OAU’s Conference of African Ministers of Education and Culture (meeting in Coutonou, Benin, in 1991) resolved, “…afford the African people a moment of pause within which to reflect on the contribution of African Writers to the development of the Continent”.

This year’s Conference will culminate in the 18th Annual South African Literary Awards (SALA) prize-giving ceremony. Since 2005, these premier literary accolades have honoured over 300 authors in sixteen categories and in eleven official languages.

The Director of the Conference, Mr Morakabe Raks Seakhoa, said, by staying with the underlying theme of decolonialisation and decoloniality, this time around is to explore the many sites of African literary existence, praxis and nuances across time and space.

Mr Seakhoa added that, “With the stellar cast made up of such excellent scholars in the persons of the keynote speaker, respondents and discussants, “the 18th Africa Century International African Writers Conference portends a worthy and timely contribution to AU’s Education and Culture Ministers’ resolution of affording the African people a moment of pause within which to reflect on the contribution of the African writers to the development of the Continent.”

Having started with one (1) category – the South African National Poet Laureate Prize - in 2005, to date, SALA boasts sixteen (16) categories, with the newest additions being the Regional/Provincial Poet Laureate, and Local Poet Laureate Prize, to be awarded for the first time in November this year 2021.

SALA accepts all 11 SA’s official languages and has to date, honoured two hundred and thirty- seven (237) authors.

Selections are made from published authors whose primary input is in imaginative writing - fiction as well as creative non-fiction. The work must demonstrate good linguistic presentation, the nation’s identity, societal values, universal truths, and cultural aesthetics. It must also contribute to social cohesion, nation building and transcendence of time.
