BEEF TATAKI SALAD

This must be one of our all-time favourite recipes - and with Spring here it is finally time to serve wonderfully versatile room temperature dishes.

Serve this salad as a side dish or make it as presented here with sirloin steak. It is also fabulous with braai'ed chicken. There is a lot of secret in the sauce...you will want to drink it!

ASIAN “POP” SALAD

I love myself a chopped salad!!! On its own, with pizza, with braaivleis…basically always. This one has a few “popping” surprises and is finished with an Asian inspired dressing which have become a staple in our house.

So, with SPRING in the air, pop over to to find this recipe! (This one is on us! 😉) Enjoy.

FRITES MET UITJES & MAYO
VOETBOOGSTRAAT, AMSTERDAM

Since 1957 this little “hole in the wall” serves the most delightful Frites with sauces to your hearts desire - and they also claim to be the number one Flemish fries of Amsterdam.

I don’t know about that because I have not tried anyone else's fries!! Since our first visit to Amsterdam in 2003, this has been our loyal stop. Always só good, washed down with a beer of a bar down the street. I include photos of our visit in 2013 when Ben-Daniël was only 10 months old!

As they would say, "eet smakelijk"!

AMSTERDAM

The last few days of our trip were spent in the charming Amsterdam with its intricate canal network, upright (and mostly squeezed in) houses, bicycles everywhere (!!!) and fabulous borrelhappies & beer.

The name Amsterdam quite literally means "a dam on the Amstel river". This dam was built to control flooding of the original small fishing village in 12th century. Today it is a bustling city with many art, culture & architecture attractions and was voted in 2022 as the 9th best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Facts aside, this city "has something to it". A charm, efficiency and deep rooted history on every corner. It was a pleasure to see you again!

ATHENS & ACROPOLIS

Travel Sketch #16/2024

Acropolis = high city. A city where you should look up to be met with fascinating stories and rich history. We only touched the tip of the proverbial mountain, but we breathed the air, felt the ground and had heated family discussions about the stories. It all made for an unforgettable first acquaintance.

See the last slide for how the Acropolis was believed to look in the Golden Age (480-404 BC). Although less “grand” today, the atmosphere and presence remains.

FAVOURITE THINGS

Travel Sketch #15/2024

To experience another country & culture through their food is intertwined into the travel experience. At first I think we tend to look for familiarity (comfort!) and from there we can dabble with the unknown and experiment. Within the food you discover language, stories, family secrets and soul. A journey we love, long for and aspire to recreate.

Some Greek favourites include Gavros (white anchovies), Summer tomatoes, Feta cheese (huge selection!), Greek yoghurt, local honey, Olive oils, Souvlaki & Gyros, the interesting use of dill & mint, Papoutsakia, Greek salad, filled vegetables, Greek oreganum, Olives, Ouzo (Deon only!), local beer, lemon chicken, peach juice, Sardines and their selection of Lays crisps! 😉

STUFFED VEG & GREEK SALAD

Travel Sketch #13/2024

Two of the things the Greek does sooo good!!! The stuffed vegetables are normally tomato & green pepper and the stuffing varies, but consist mainly of rice and sometimes also minced pork and herbs. If done well (and charred properly!), it is just gorgeous and a meal on its own. Pair it with a classic Greek salad of ONLY ripe tomatoes, Green Pepper, red onion, olives and the best slice of feta cheese. Heaven.

MY PA

My liewe lekker liefdevolle Pa

Ek is so dankbaar vir my liewe, lekker, liefdevolle Pa.

GREEK OCTOPUS

Travel Sketch #12/2024

Catching, drying and preparing octopus is a big thing in Greece. Even though it makes for interesting pictures and (sometimes) tasty dishes, I have grown quite sensitive to these sightings. It simply reminds me too much of My Octopus teacher. 🙈

Please, no haters. This is just a travel diary of things we experience. 💙

RAVÉOS / GAVROS
European white anchovies

Because of the ample fresh fish in Greece, it is no surprise that tinned fish is also a huge business here. Beautiful colourful and varied options found in the supermarkets. But the one fish found fresh everywhere, is Gavros. The small wild (white) anchovy. My dad used to always ask me: “wanneer kry jy weer vir ons van daai klein silwer vissies?”. He loved it and so do we!

We prepped it here with cubed green pepper, capers and fresh dill and had it with/on a ridiculously nice chip from . It is a perfect sundowner snack with a glass of ice cold Sauvignon Blanc.

Again. Yamas! 😉

ALL THINGS FISHY

Travel sketch #6/2024

Greece in general I believe, and also the area in Lesvos we are, specialise in "all things fishy". So many fresh, marinated and salted fish options and some of it can be described as "Greek susji".

Yesterday we had a fabulous beach day at Tarti and a great lunch at the beach restaurant, eating a bite and cooling off in the ocean in-between. What a treat! We enjoyed very good cured & grilled sardines, cured monkfish fillets, the best stuffed zucchini flowers yet and off course Ouzo to wash it all down! Thanks for the company and all the tips Manos & Janri!

BLUE & TURQUOISE

These colours are the theme of our holiday so far.

TURQUOISE get its current name from French pierre tourques, or “Turkish Stone.” This phrase refers to the Turkish traders who introduced the gem to Europe via the Silk Road in the 13th century. We saw this colour everywhere while in Istanbul: in the ceramics, the tiles and roofs of the mosques and in the well known "evil eye" stones.

BLUE, as in the Greek flag, represents water & sky. As per Google: "Blue and white are the national colours of Greece, as blue symbolizes the sky and seas and white denotes the purity of the Greek independence struggle."

I find comfort in these colours. They calm me and the patterns intrigue me. A good combination!

TAVERNA MARIA

Our neighbours in Melinta, Lesvos. Maria (on the second last photo with Deon) still keeps an eager eye on everything happening in the restaurant, while her daughter Elena (last photo) keep all the balls in the air - love how she comes to sit at the table to take the order! They make delicious authentic Greek food and the whole family gets involved to keep things running smoothly. So much respect.

FATHER'S DAY

What does it take to be a father? A dad?
For me...
Strong arms that can hold you
A big heart that can love and care for you
And then, calmness to hold the family together
With vulnerability, honesty and gentleness.

The biggest gift my dad has given me, is to have loved my mother like he did. It gave us security and taught us about compromise, partnership and commitment. Through that we had love and experiences in abundance.

Deon - you are a gift. We love what you are and the honesty with which you approach life and our journey - the willingness to grow and learn. Doing life with you is exciting and precious. Love you ###

ISTANBUL

As we watched the last sunset over Istanbul before we depart tomorrow, we reflect on four colourful days! This city is ALIVE and contrasting at its core. Therefore it is so fitting that it has 3 sides stretching over 2 continents, various food cultures, rich political and religious history and in reality too complex to grasp in so little time.

I kick off my travel water paintings with the view from our apartment. A little haven on the inside, entering from a street that looks extremely suspicious - once again accentuating the contrasts that are everywhere.

We leave with many new memories, flavours and colours in our hearts.

Being a (real) mother…

is the thing I will never take for granted

Because see,
I waited for a long time to be a mom,
it was a different road for us…
and beyond always dreaming about a family
we actively tried for 10 years
with medical professionals
and many all consuming procedures
to try and make this dream come true.

But things just did not want to work.
We had the most amazing family and friends supporting us,
we also received much unasked advice and opinions.
The two of us were really lucky to have each other.
And then, at the point when our options became few,
our miracle son arrived - on an unassuming Friday afternoon
and on our 21st anniversary of meeting each other.

How could we have ever known the all consuming love that was possible,
the “coincidental” date of his birth an extra sign that this was Divine intervension.
He was ours and we were his, completely.
It is also the only mother/parenthood we know…
And for us this is 100% real and completely “meant to be”.

So, for the rest of my life I will advocate for this,
not only for him or us, but for every adopted soul
ánd families formed in non-typical ways.
You are a REAL child to your REAL parents.
Being differently “put together”
does not make you fake (the opposite of real!).
It makes you unique
hoped and prayed for
wonderfully special
and oh, so incredibly loved.
