🐾💔🐾 All the puppies in these pictures died of parvo last month....
January was a hard month for HALO when it comes to dealing with Parvo and Distemper. We lost over 18 puppies and the effectiveness of these horrible viruses keep surprising us. Despite the best of care puppies that seemed quite lively and eating were dead in a matter of hours. Absolutely heartbreaking for our dedicated volunteers who work round the clock to care for these dogs. 🐾💔🐾

In the last three months we dealt with over 40 cases of parvo and distemper. With parvo we had a success rate of 80% (not counting January as that turned out to be 100% casualty rate) but at a hefty financial and emotional cost.

🩺 We see The Oaks and The Willows performing really well with lots of vaccinated dogs and hardly any cases but our main area of concern is now California and LeBoeng. This region holds the poorest communities in our area and dogs are often used for accompanying the owners on hunts so dogs get moved around in the community a lot. We have established several infection areas and educated owners on how they have to help stop the spread of the virus. The only way to prevent further spread is to make sure all dogs get vaccinated as soon as possible. Unvaccinated adult dogs need 2 rounds of shots (one month apart), puppies need 3. It is a costly affair but it is still cheaper than euthanising a dog (R250 excl. transport) or putting in IV fluids and special food and meds (which easily come to R1500 per dog).

🍀For R 120 an adult dog is spared from these deadly viruses
🍀For R 180 a puppy is saved from parvo and distemper
🍀A single shot of the vaccine costs R 60

💉On 11 February HALO conducts the monthly outreach at California and LeBoeng. Usually we see around 80-150 dogs at these places. We expect around 50% to need their vaccinations, meaning we are looking for donors for 40-75 dogs.

🐕Are you able to help out with a donation? When you donate to this cause, please email us your name and the amount you donated. As we did with the rabies campaign, where we successfully vaccinated 200 dogs with your help, we will email you pictures of the dogs that we were able to vaccinate! 🐕
