Africa!!! How I love the name also

Before the Eur0pean settled for the word Africa, the continent was called many other names. They include Corphye, Ortigia,Libya, and Ethiopia, Alkebulan

Other names such as the land of Ham (Ham means dark skins), mother of mankind, the garden of Eden, Kingdoms in the sky, and the land of cush or kesh (referring to the Cush*tes who were ancient Ethiopian) were used.

No one knows the source of the names for sure. However, the theories below shed some light on how this second largest continent got its new name.

Roman theory

Some scholars believe that the word originated from the Romans. Romans discovered a land opposite the Mediterranean and named it after the Berber tribe residing within the Carnage area, presently referred to as Tunisia. The tribe's name was Afri.

Weather theory

Some believe that the name was coiled from the continent's climate. Deriving from aphrike, a Greek word that means a land free from cold and horror. A variation of the Roman word aprica, which means sunny, or even the Phoenician word afar, which means dust.

Africus Theory

This claims that the continent derived its name from Africus. Africus is a Yemenite chieftain who invaded the northern part in the second millennium BC,It is argued that he settled on his conquered land and named it Afrikyah.

Phoenician Theory

Another school of thought suggests that the name is derived from two Phoenician words friqi and pharika. The words mean corns and fruits when translated. Hypothetically the Phoenician christened the continent as the land of corns and fruits.

Alkebu-lan “mother of mankind” or “garden of Eden”.” Alkebulan is the oldest and the only word of indigenous origin. It was used by the Moors,Nubians, Numidians,Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians) and Ethiopians.

There is little or no certainty on the source or meaning Africa. Several scholars have tried to explain the origin of the word, but none is convincingly correct.

Some photos I took from taxi rides to show the many and different tyoea of flats all over Singapore. I also visited homes, but mostly flats here. All shapes and sizes. Some government flars and some privately owned.

Had a barbeque tonight with some locals. They have this huge drum with coals at the bottom and then they steam/smoke… not sure the meat hanging on the side. But I am telling you…. singaporeqns can eat!!! And they are not overweight at all. But they love good food. Look at this home meal. They are definitely also meat eaters it seems….. and seafood of course!!! Had the best prawns over here.

I have never seen so many boats in one
Place as here in Singapore.
When you come in on a flight, you see hundreds and hundreds of ships,
Not even talking about boats. This is just ons small part at night on the residential side. Not
A harbour or anything.

Unlike South Africa where I am from, here in Singapore (and mostly all Asian countries), you are not allowed to wear
Shoes inside people’s homes. So everywhere you go, shoes are left at the front door and everyone walks barefoot inside. I love walking barefoot so have no problem with this. But…. Just on a side note….
This can never ever work in South Africa for obvious reasons if I show you some pictures outside people’s front doors. Imagine doing this in SA!

In Singapore, space is truly a problem. Nearly the whole of Singapore has already been developed. They are now 6million people with no extra land as Singapore is an island. The government is taking back some of the ocean, but they can only dry up so much. This means that there are not many houses in Singapore. They are dar less than the flats. The flats are
Thousands upon thousands of flats. Some subsidised by government and others privately owned. But in a place like this where space is a commodity, you can imagine how expensive it is to own a flat or house. But with all this said, Singapore’s creatives have really gone all out to let their people live in great circumstances and have good quality lives. I have been to many of these different blocks of flats, bith Government and privately owned. It is like small little villages. A few blocks of flats are grouped together in parks or what we would call security complexes in South Africa. Within these complexes there are swimming pools, parks, entertainment areas, shops and markets,
Playgrounds and simply just so very cool. The inside of these flats are very cool. Although it is tightly fitted with everything, it is not small. But everything can gold open ot expand or something. Space savers on everything. Let me share just one such a block with you

All over Singapore there are these “villages” that are nothing more than market places where the locals gather. Not the same thing as villages in Africa. So here you can shop for everyday stuff, eat and eat and eat some more and just everything happens in these villages and the bigger malls.
I simply love going to these as this is where you see the culture and local habits and food and simply just the nation. This morning I paid a visit to Changi Village on the East side of Singapore

Nearly all of the hotels or resorts have these huge swimming pools and truly, it is needed as the water of the ocean is just toooooo warm to cool off. So swimming pools are like a necessity here and some of them are truly huge and beautiful.

I do enjoy the parks and boardwalks in Singapore. Just did not get enough time to truly enjoy them. But apart from it being very humid and hot outside, it truly is a blessing to walk these paths.

This boardwalk is at Changi Village, East Sife of Singapore.

There is no Uber in Singapore, only Grab and works exactly like Uber. But it is a great way to get round, just extremely expensive. There are other ways to travel, shuttles, busses, taxis (metered) and the beautiful subway, MRT… but the Grab taxis are convenient and there is a system in place. Everything in Singapore is very organised. They are definitely, Like the Swiss, an OCD nation. But for a foreigner, it works to our advantage. If you take a taxi here and pay by credit card (the metered ones), they add 10% to your total and they mostly only take Mastercard. But it is a great way of getting round. You will not get lost. And all very neat, aircon and calming music hehehehe. But not all of them will engage in a conversation. Very private or maybe uncomfortable with the language or just their personalities. None the less…. Easy to travel in Singapore.

There are literary 100’s of small little pubs and restaurants and eateries in the streets of Singapore and of course, being surrounded by ocean, lots of seafood. But I cannot eat all the seafood here. Some
Are absolutely delicious and others an acquired taste. But look at these monster crabs which you can choose from when eating at some of these places. They are kept alive until you choose one. Zoom in and you will see how huge they are.
