ITS YOUR WEDDING WEEK!

Your wedding day is approaching fast and you want everything to be perfect. Here are 7 important things you need to do a week before your big day:

1. Confirm the final details with your vendors, such as the caterer, florist, photographer, DJ, etc. Make sure they have your contact information and the correct time and location of the ceremony and reception.

2. Confirm the dates and details of your marriage certificates either at church or your local council. You need to have the legal documents ready and valid for your big day.

3. Make sure that your bridal team has their dresses and outfits ready and that they fit well. You don't want any last-minute surprises or alterations.

4. Practice the final steps of your dance routines with your bridal team. You want to impress your guests and have fun on the dance floor.

5. Make sure you have the wedding rings ready and that they are given to the right person on your special day.

6. Get your final beauty treatments, such as a manicure, pedicure, facial, hair color, etc. You want to look and feel your best on your wedding day, so pamper yourself.

CULTURE: ICILANGA-MULILO MISREPRESENTED

Icilanga-mulilo lutambi lwa IciBemba. This pre-marriage ceremony is primarily between the son-in-law and the mother-in-law. The ceremony takes place before ubwinga (wedding ceremony). The purpose of icilanga-mulilo is:

1) Ukushikula umulumendo (to make free the groom) so that he can be free to eat what is prepared for him by the mother-in-law;

2) Ukushikula umulumendo (to make free the groom) so that he can be free to bath the hot water prepared for him from the mother-in-law's house;

3) To show the son-in-law the variety of food available in his mother-in-law's house;

4) To give the son-in-law the opportunity to indicate to the mother-in-law the types of food he doesn't eat (so that they don't prepare such food for him in future).

Icilanga-mulilo IS NOT
1) about umukashana (the bride);
2) for teaching umukashana how to prepare food;
3) for teaching umukashana (the bride) about the meanings of food;
4) for teaching umukashana (the bride) about marriage.

In the olden days, the bride and groom would often come from different villages. When the groom visited the bride, he would only eat and bath water from the bride's grandmother. Only after ukushikulwa (through icilanga-mulilo) would he be freed. A token of amashikulo was put on the food and in a cup of hot water.

- Zambian weddings usually start with a dowry or bride price, called lobola, which is paid by the groom's family to the bride's family as a sign of respect and gratitude. The lobola can consist of money, cattle, chickens or other items that are agreed upon by both families.

- Before the wedding, the bride undergoes a training session with a bana chimbusa, who is a female elder or relative who teaches her everything she needs to know about marriage and love. The bride is also expected to keep everything she learns secret until the wedding day.

- The bride also has a kitchen party, which is a pre-wedding celebration where she receives gifts and advice from her female friends and relatives. The kitchen party is also a way of welcoming the groom's family into the bride's family.

- The groom has a katawa mpango, who is a mediator or negotiator who helps arrange the wedding details with the bride's family. The katawa mpango also brings a ceremonial hoe to the bride's family as a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
