Did you know?!

The Luangwa Bridge is the principal engineering challenge on Zambia's Great East Road, crossing the lower Luangwa River where it flows from the Luangwa Rift Valley into the Zambezi valley.

The First Luangwa Bridge was built in Zambia's colonial era in 1932 as a narrow 300 m long wide steel and reinforced concrete deck on concrete piers and columns, financed, like the Chirundu Bridge and Beit Bridge by the Beit Trust. Its proximity to Mozambique (about 2 km) and Rhodesia (60 km), as well as its status as the only access point within the country for Zambia's Eastern Province, makes it strategically vulnerable in any conflict.

After Zambia's independence in 1964, President Kenneth Kaunda's support for freedom fighters in neighbouring countries led to the bridge being destroyed in revenge.

The Second Luangwa Bridge (opened in 1968) was built quickly above the first, with aid from Britain which had been the colonial power in Zambia. It is a cable-stayed bridge designed by Freeman Fox & Partners and built by the Redpath Dorman Long. It has a composite steel-reinforced concrete deck 9.8 m wide, two H-shaped steel pylons 42 m tall on two reinforced concrete piers, and steel cables. The main span is 222 m with approach spans of 40 m each.

In 1979 the military of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia then destroyed the bridge as well as the Chambeshi road and rail bridges in order to stop the planned invasion of their country by the Zimbabwean People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA).

After another two decades of use, the bridge was rehabilitated under a project of the National Road Fund Agency funded by Danish aid.

Did you know?!
Many ancient fossil sites are in urban landscapes where they have been affected by development. None are as heartbreaking as the site at Kabwe, Zambia, where an ancient human skull was uncovered by miners in 1921.

Nothing is left today of the ancient “Bone Cave” from which the skull and other remains were dug, or indeed of the small hill, or kopje, that contained the cave. By the time of the skull's discovery the site was already on the way to obliteration, the center of a rapidly growing industrial mine and surrounding town.

Something Beautiful and Interesting in Luapula Province.
Did you know?!

Ntumbachushi Falls is situated on the N'gona River in Luapula Province, Zambia it runs over the edge of the northern counties northern plateau into the valley of the Luapula River.

The main falls occur where the river splits into two channels to form two parallel waterfalls each about 10 m wide with a drop of about 30 m, and separated by a distance of 50 m.

A small patch of relict rainforest grows in the spray from the falls. During and immediately after the rainy season, November to April, the water coming over the edge may have a depth of up to 1 m, but in the later dry season the flow may reduce to a produce a 'bridalveil' effect.

Ntumbachushi is notable not just for the main falls, however, but for a series of smaller falls and pools stretching for a distance of more than 2 km above the main falls, in a landscape described by many as among the most beautiful in central Africa, with unusual vegetation, rocky outcrops and views over the Luapula valley.

It's not the ending of the world 😂!
But did you know that the Serengeti National Park runs from north central Tanzania to the border of Kenya and they were named after a Maasai local word Siringet which means 'endless plains'.

Did you know that the saddle-billed stork is silent due to the absence of a vocal cord? Instead, the saddle-billed stork communicates by clattering its bills.

Like most storks, the saddle-billed stork is mainly solitary and forage alone or in pairs. Pairs are territorial and generally mate for life. The iris of the male eye is brown, and the female’s eye is yellow. They feed primarily on fish but opportunistically eat frogs, small mammals, reptiles and young birds.

Did you know?!

The Kazungula Bridge is a road and rail bridge over the Zambezi River linking Zambia and Botswana.
The bridge covers a stretch of 923-metre-long (3,028 ft) by 18.5-metre-wide (61 ft) bridge has a longest span of 129 metres (423 ft)

Opened in May 2021, it replaced a ferry and was built to speed up truck traffic along a key north-south trade artery.

The bridge features a single-line railway track between two traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways.

Interesting to note is that the bridge is at the quadripoint, a point that touches the border of four distinct territories.
Also known as the “four corners of Africa,” these four countries meet at the eastern end of the Caprivi Strip – Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

There are more than 150 tripoints in the world but only ONE international quadripoint.

Something interesting in Eastern Zambia | LUAMBE NATIONAL PARK.

Did you know that!

Half a century ago, Luambe, consisting mainly of mopane woodland and patches of open savanna along the Luangwa River, was well-known for its rhinos and a relatively popular getaway.

The rhinos are long gone, but plenty of other wildlife has returned in recent years. The elephants are becoming more relaxed again, large herds of eland and zebra mingle with puku and impala on the plains, sometimes joined by kudu and giraffe. The hippo pods are among the largest in Africa, bee-eater colonies abound along the riverbank, and with a bit of luck you might just spot a bush pig, porcupine or bush baby. Lions, leopards and wild dogs can be found here, too.

Did you know that!
The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Zambia’s best-kept secrets. While the Falls and the more famous South Luangwa National Park get plenty of attention, the Lower Zambezi is a beautiful jewel that is happy to have a lower profile coupled with a temperate climate, plenty of river action and low visitor numbers – with accommodation to match an array of pockets.

Hello Zambezi 😊...

Although the Victoria Falls rightfully hold the place as Zambia’s top destination for travellers to Africa, the country offers much more to see and do. As the Zambezi River plummets over the rock face into Batoka Gorge, it flows eastward. Downstream and much further east it slows and broadens to become the Lower Zambezi – and the source of life for the astonishing array of wildlife in Lower Zambezi National Park.
