STATEMENT ON COVID-19 IN ZAMBIA
LUSAKA (Saturday 5th June, 2021)
Good morning members of the press, country men, women and the Youth.
Globally, 416,773 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded with 10,237 deaths in the last 24 hours. Of the global new COVID 19 cases, the majority are still being reported from Asia while Africa has continued showing an increasing trend in new cases.
A total of 15,119 new cases and 275 deaths were recorded in Africa. Of these, 37% of cases and 24% of deaths were from South Africa. Tunisia and Uganda also recorded high numbers of cases, whereas amongst Zambia’s neighbours Namibia, Botswana and the Democratic Republic of Congo have also seen an increase in their numbers.
The evolution of our epidemiological picture has seen the number of our daily new cases increase from under 100 to over 500 at the start of June and today we see over 1,000 new cases. Indeed this is cause for concern.
Our focus remains ensuring the preparedness of our frontline, particularly in terms of increased hospital capacity for the increasing admissions, as well as surge staff capacity and commodities security. The new Lusaka Specialised Hospital is set to be operational today adding an extra 160 beds to the response.
We had projected that the third wave would hit us around this time learning from what was happening globally and on the continent. We remain committed to ensure that all the pillars in our response continue to be strengthened.
We have continued engagement with our various stakeholders. Our epidemic preparedness, Prevention, control and management committees at Provincial and District levels are active and we urge all stakeholders to support the various interventions being implemented. We reiterate our call on the importance of shifting the fight from the health facilities to the communities. Let us avoid overwhelming the health system by closing the taps of infection in our community.
Yesterday, the Chinese ambassador to Zambia officially confirmed the donation of 100,000 doses of Sinopharm to Zambia. We are in discussions to finalize the arrangements for the transportation and other logistics required to bring the vaccine into the country. The Government of the Republic of Zambia is indebted to the People’s Republic of China for this gesture.
As we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we have not lost sight of our other public health threats, particularly Cholera.
In line with our Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan, we have made tremendous progress in vaccinating the cholera hotspots around the country. We are currently carrying out the cholera vaccination in the Lukanga swamps and thereafter, we will carry out the vaccination campaign in hotspots in Kapiri-Mposhi and finally Lusaka.
We are confident that with the strides made with the targeted vaccinations in our hotspots, we will see a very different picture with regard to cholera outbreaks in the country.
In the last 24 hours, we recorded One Thousand One Hundred and Sixty-Four (1,164) new confirmed cases out of 10,678 tests conducted (11% positivity), bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 99,540. The breakdown of the new cases (and positivity) by province are as follows: Central 99 (14%), Copperbelt 113 (9%), Eastern 114 (8%), Luapula 17 (4%), Lusaka 488 (15%), Muchinga 7 (1%), Northern 12 (2%), North-western 18 (5%), Southern 96 (10%) and Western 200 (20%).
Sadly, we have continued to record an increased number of daily deaths, with six new deaths in the last 24 hours. The deaths were reported from Lusaka (3), Central (1) and Northern (1) and Western (1) provinces. Three of the deaths have been classified as COVID-19 deaths, while the other three were classified as COVID-19 associated deaths. The cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date now stands at 1,303 (classified as 737 COVID deaths and 566 COVID-19 associated deaths. A total of 522 discharges were made from both the COVID-19 isolation facilities and home management around the country, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 93,036 (93% recovered). There are currently 5,201 active cases, of whom 4,986 (96%) are under community management and 215 (4%) are admitted to our COVID-19 isolation facilities. In the last 24 hours, we saw 50 new admissions. Among those currently under admission, 159 (74%) are on Oxygen therapy and 19 (9%) are in critical condition.
Fellow countrymen and women, the number of cases that we have recorded this week alone are indeed worrisome.
We must all play our part in ensuring adherence to the five golden rules if we are to protect the health and wellbeing of our people. Remember to: 1) Mask up correctly and consistently; 2) Maintain physical distance; 3) Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer; 4) Avoid crowded places if possible, particularly super spreader events, or stay at home; and 5) Seek medical attention early if you are symptomatic.
Let’s all work together and defeat COVID 19.
God bless Zambia.
