Did you know that mosquitoes are not born with malaria parasites? They only become infected when they bite an infected person and take in their blood. The parasites then travel to the mosquito's salivary glands, where they can be transmitted to the next person the mosquito bites.
There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes, but only one type, the Anopheles mosquito, transmits malaria. Anopheles mosquitoes are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. They are most active at night, when they bite people and animals.
Mosquitoes are not the only insects that can transmit malaria. Other insects, such as sandflies and ticks, can also transmit the disease. However, mosquitoes are the most common vector of malaria.
