Yonela Ngewu was given a second chance at farming, thanks to the govt Covid-19 relief grant. After losing her business in a house fire, Yonela had to start from scratch, but the R350 provided by govt helped her find her feet.
She used the first R350 to buy cabbage seeds and planted cabbage in her back yard.
"In the following months I saved up enough money to buy more chicks and material to build a chicken coop for my chicks. My father was very supportive and he helped me build the coop", she said.
After building the chicken coop and buying her chicks, she once again planted spinach and added potatoes to her garden.
"Starting over was not easy because I was overcome with challenges. My biggest challenge was the fact that I didn't have fencing around my vegetable garden. My chickens would eat my vegetables and goats in my village would trespass and feast on my vegetables as well"
Not having a water supply system also added to her challenges.
"I had to carry water in containers from a faraway river in our village."

Katlego Mohloding (21) started a poultry farm as a side hustle while a full-time student at the University of Limpopo. He then started vegetable farming to supplement the cash flow from his chicken business.
As a student at the University of Limpopo, 2019 Katlego was exposed to a pool of young, business minded people through Enactus South Africa, a non-profit that inspires students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action. He was appointed as project manager of Enactus Tihuku project, which works with subsistence poultry farmers in Mamotintane, a small village in Mankweng.
He says that while working to help the farmers level up to become commercial farmers, the influence from the group rubbed off on him. Before he knew it he was inspired into starting something of his own.
