The Impact of Family Expectations on the Wedding Budget

The one thing that creates the biggest headaches when planning a wedding in Zimbabwe is managing family expectations.

One would expect that the prices of wedding vendors, wedding services and products would cause the most headaches but this is not the case.

Whilst in Africa, a wedding is a family affair, as an engaged couple do not make your personal wishes subservient to the wishes of others.

Remember, this is YOUR wedding and if you’re footing the bill, then you need to find a way to honor your family while still protecting your finances.

A respectful conversation today can prevent unnecessary conflict and resentment in the future.

Planning a wedding with the aim to stick to a budget is difficult hence why we have put together some tips to help you manage whatever budget you might have allocated to your special day.

1. Don’t overlook the small details

Make sure you go through every single moment step by step. Small things matter more than you think. Even small decisions like adding another bridesmaid to your party can increase your costs. Pay attention to the details no matter how small.

2. Delegate specific tasks to your bridesmaids (don’t assume)

Your bridesmaids are extra pairs of hands which you can utilized to get tasks done before, during and after the wedding. Ask them to run some errands in your behalf. Ask them to handle the guest table or setup the bridal changing/ dressing room. When you’re planning a wedding, every penny counts and delegating tasks to your wedding party can minimize the number of vendors that you need to hire for your wedding.

3. Plan for unexpected changes, especially with vendors

Things can go wrong. I always tell my brides that I’ve never hosted a “perfect” wedding. Problems will always arise at even the most organized or well planned wedding. That’s why you need a wedding planner or day of coordinator to handle those things for you whilst you enjoy your day. When you know that anything can happen, you’re mentally prepared to tackle anything that might happen.

4. Coordinate food properly

We all know that the hallmark of a great Zimbabwean wedding is the abundance of food. Our people attend weddings with the expectation that they will be well fed. As a result, you might provide too much food. This generally leads to so much leftover food. To avoid wasting money, I always suggest that our brides and grooms should decide what should be done with their leftovers in advance. Do they want their leftovers to be offered to guests as takeaways? Do they want the leftovers to be donated to the less fortunate or do they want to carry their leftovers?

Now that you’ve reduced your wedding idea to a specific number, the next question becomes: “where should you spend more?”

When it comes to wedding budgeting, you don’t have to allocate the exact amounts of money to each category of expense. Some expenses are allowed to have a bigger allocation than others. It all boils down to your peculiar preferences as a couple I.e. your priorities.

Most of my couples say they never regret investing in:

Planning a wedding doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. It just needs a plan.

One of the biggest mistakes many Zimbabwean couples make is trying to plan everything at once. The result? Stress, overspending, forgotten details and unnecessary last-minute panic.

That’s exactly why we created this Zimbabwean Wedding Checklist.

A checklist is like a map, guiding you to your final destination which is your perfect wedding. Whenever you get lost or overwhelmed, you can always refer back to it to see where you are and which steps can be taken to take you to the next stage.

This checklist breaks your wedding planning journey into manageable stages, so you always know what to focus on next.

12+ Months Before

Ideally, your wedding planning journey should start at least a year before your expected wedding date. This allows you to have enough time to plan without getting into a rush. However, some might start even 2 years before their expected wedding date, whilst some decide to give themselves a shorter planning period. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to this, you can do what works best for you.

12 months before your wedding is the time you build a solid foundation by setting your budget, choosing your wedding date, booking your venue and creating your guest list.

6–9 Months Before

Now that you have a budget, you can allocate specific amounts of money to specific vendors or items. You can now secure your key suppliers like the wedding venue and wedding planner by paying your deposits. You can start plan your roora/lobola, bridal shower/ kitchen party, bachelor party, ceremony, reception etc.

3–6 Months Before

You’re now closer to your wedding date. By this time, all wedding vendor deposits should be paid up and you should have a concrete plan for completing the balances. You now have a clear picture of your special day and the celebration begins taking shape. Finer details about your menu, cake, decor, flowers, transport and entertainment should be finalized by now.

1–3 Months Before

By now, you should be making final payments for your services and wedding vendors and confirming bookings. You can now start sending out your wedding invitations and save the dates for your wedding day. This is the time to make sure that all the detail comes together beautifully, just the way you want it to be.

2–4 Weeks Before

Your RSVPs should have been received so you can now fine-tune your guest numbers, organize the seating plan and logistics so there are no surprises.

Wedding Week

Delegate the stress to your team. Trust your wedding planner/ wedding coordinator to handle everything and enjoy every precious moment. You’ve earned it.

Start Your Wedding Planning With a Number

Before you book a venue, choose your décor or even start shopping for supplies, you need to ask yourselves one question:

“How much can we realistically afford?”

The answer to that question is the number that you need to kickstart your wedding planning journey. As a wedding planner, my job is to make engage couples settle on a number first before they start doing anything else.

Your wedding budget should be based on your finances as a couple. It should not be based on people’s promises or expectations that “the church will pledge or someone will step in to offer you financial assistance. Neither should it be based on the expectation of receiving lavish gifts from your wedding guests nor on the prospect of future income. Your budget should also not be based on what another couple spent or what you saw on social media.

A clear budget makes every other wedding decision easier.

“How much should a Zimbabwean wedding actually cost?”

If you have ever planned a wedding or if you are planning a wedding then this is definitely a question that you have asked. It’s probably the first question that my brides ask me when we have our first wedding consultation.

I must say, this is a very difficult question to answer because there is no right or wrong answer. There is no one size fits all when it comes to the cost of wedding. This is because the cost of a wedding is particular to the couple planning the wedding. No two weddings will cost the same because each couple has different access to money, different spending habits, different priorities and different tastes.

That’s why I prefer to say that there is no “perfect” wedding budget but there is the “right” budget.

The right budget is one that suits your unique personality and vision as a couple. It allows you to celebrate your love without the creating unnecessary financial stress for you after the wedding.
