I’m Karen, a Melbournian mum. The amount of waste at kid’s parties disturbs me, so I decided to do something about it. I’ve started a business providing alternatives to single-use at kid’s parties: partyware for hire at affordable prices. Plates, bowels, cups, cutlery, tablecloth and bunting.
My dream is for reusables at kids’ parties to be commonplace. If you like the sound of this, check out my page and Follow or Like me.

The recyclability of paper plates varies widely across councils in Melbourne. Paper plates with a plastic coating can’t be recycled. You can check this by doing the rip test. If it rips like paper, then it’s likely paper. As for paper plates, some councils say if there is little to no food or grease it can be recycled. Other councils say the plate must have no contact with food to be recycled. To add to confusion some councils say certain plates can go into FOGO (food and garden bin). To avoid confusion, it’s best to contact your local council. Hopefully there will be a general consensus amongst councils about paper plates soon.

Palm leaf plates are compostable in the home system which makes them more eco-friendly than other single-use plates.

Unfortunately, palm leaf plates are not accepted in the FOGO (food and garden) waste bin. The waste processor accepts no ‘compostable’ dinnerware as it’s difficult to identify what an item is made from at the sorting facility. This is unlikely to change any time soon. ☹

If you want to use palm leaf, washing for reuse then disposal in your home composting is a great eco-friendly alternative.

The fact that sugarcane plates made by BioPak can’t be home composted makes them little better than other sugarcane plates. 😞The plates contain PFAS (a group of man-made chemicals) and therefore don’t meet composting standards.

In saying this, I’ve rated them slightly better than other sugarcane plates as the company BioPak is known for its eco-friendly products.

While sugarcane might sound eco-friendly, there is little transparency about what goes into the plates during manufacture and disposal is no better than paper plates as they are for landfill.

While some companies say their plates are compostable, they are not commercially compostable. In Melbourne, FOGO (food and garden) waste goes to a facility for screening, sorting and treatment. Neither machines, nor staff can differentiate which plates are compostable and which are not, so all plates are removed as contamination and sent to landfill.

Or you could use them for your standard party food of sausage rolls, party pies, frankfurts and fairy bread.

Make a party hat out of cardboard then add leaves, feathers, flowers or other items you find from your backyard or local park. Or you could make a leaf crown out of freshly fallen maple leaves.

Swap the classic musical chairs party game to musical lily pads. Create homemade lily pads from green cardboard cut outs or use hoops. Instead of walking around, kids can jump like frogs and when the music stops jump onto a lily pad.

Decorate printed masks with leaves to help your children become superheroes, fight crime and help save the environment.

Bake blue and green Earth cookies.

Instead of regular party bags you could give wildflower seed bombs and a mini watering can.

If you’re a fan of pinatas you could make your own paper mache planet Earth and fill it with your choice of goodies.

Relive old memories and create daisy chains.

So excited to finally launch Onestep Green Solutions out into the wide word of Melbourne.

I’m Karen, a mum, living in Ashwood. Passionate about taking care of our planet and reducing waste. The volume of single-use items at kid’s parties disturbs me, so I’ve decided to do something about it……. providing alternatives to single-use at kids parties.

My dream is to make reusables at kids parties common place. If you like the sound of this, keep an eye on this page as more to follow shortly.
