The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is an international, dynamic and outward-facing cultural institution, training and performance company, with a demonstrated commitment to engaging with its communities. In addition, ANAM has industry partnerships with organisations including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Sydney, Tasmanian, Melbourne and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, the Auckland Philharmonia, Musica Viva Australia, a range of national music and arts festivals, and internationally with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and London’s Royal College of Music. ANAM respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands spread across Australia on which we work and live. We uphold and honour their continued relationship to these sites, we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

TSO & ANAM: NOBUYUKI TSUJII
Sat 02 Nov 2024, 7.30 PM

Bruckner’s musical language is unique – grand-gestured but contemplative, deeply human while gazing at the heavens. If Mahler is a supreme sceptic about our place in the universe, Bruckner’s music celebrates the bond between human life and the profound joy of spiritual belief.

ANAM musicians will explore the musical wonders of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony as part of this special concert with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra under their Chief Conductor Eivind Aadland.

The concert begins with a miracle of beauty and excitement - the young Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2, in which the soloist will be someone equally miraculous – Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, blind from birth and a gold medal winner in the Van Cliburn Competition.

BRAVE NEW WORLDS: ACTIVISM
Thu 24 Oct 2024, 3 PM

It has been said that people scarcely feel unity in a more powerful way than when they unite to sing an anthem. Musical works have been a symbol of unity among activists throughout history and act as aural records of turning points in the human story. This concert series offers a number of the most celebrated works of the canon, some reflecting major developments in thought and philosophy, and others showing the before-and-after of cataclysm.

Part of the program is curated by the ANAM musicians and consists of music motivated by action needed today. Across four performances, the faculty and musicians of ANAM explore the breadth of political upheaval in music, from the enlightenment utopias of Mozart to music born out of world war, to music birthed from rebellion and protest, join us for this revolutionary journey to Brave New Worlds.

ANAM at NGV
Sat 19 Oct 2024, 11 AM & 12.15 PM

Each year, musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) are given the opportunity to curate performances at National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Australia responding to their exhibitions and collections. In October, NGV and ANAM unite to present classical music performances inspired by The Joseph Brown Collection, which tells the story of Australian immigrant Dr Joseph Brown AO OBE who became an artist, soldier and mentor.

Aditya Bhat (percussion/electronics), Sola Hughes (violin) and Kina Lin-Wilmoth (bassoon) will perform 'sympoietics of colour and form' – an improvised composition which translates the works of The Joseph Brown Collection into a collaborative musical score.

Free entry, booking is not required.

ANAM AT ELGEE PARK: SPRING 2024
Sat 26 Oct 2024, 2 PM & 4.30 PM

Be sure to join us at Elgee Park for a stunning afternoon of music, featuring Holly Harrison's piece 'Airbender', for bassoon and string quartet.

As the title suggests, Airbender is loosely inspired by the fictional art of ‘airbending’, as explored in the animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. An extension of martial arts, airbenders possess an extraordinary ability to manipulate air and control the surrounding environment. In this way, the work imagines the bassoon as a type of sonic airbender, conjuring up an array of sounds driven by air! The piece explores the agility of the bassoon and extremes of register, and seeks to highlight the solo capabilities of the instrument. Airbender is further inspired by slap bass solos, prog-rock guitar ‘shredding’, and bluegrass sonorities, which trickle down into the string quartet.

Holly Harrison is an Australian composer from Western Sydney. Holly’s music is driven by the nonsense literature of Lewis Carroll, embracing stylistic juxtapositions, the visceral energy of rock, and whimsical humour. She was the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s composer in residence across 2020-2022, and in 2024 is composer in residence for the Canberra International Music Festival. Her music has been described as “exploding off the page”, full of “riotous energy, eclectic rhythmic complexity” and “inventive, witty and invested with thrilling dynamism and momentum”.

ANAM MASTERCLASS: KATY WOOLLEY
Thu 10 Oct 2024, 10.30 AM

Katy Woolley, one of the most exciting horn players of her generation, is the principal horn of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouworkest Orchestra and an international visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music. Ahead of her ANAM residency this October, we asked her about the horn and her career.

On working with other musicians: “Working with anyone at the height of their potential is just the most life-enhancing and inspiring thing.”

On collaborating with ANAM musicians: “The program we’re playing is absolutely heavenly. I’m so excited to work with each individual musician, the ANAM musicians are world famous for their level and dedication. Then coming together and creating something greater than the individual parts – that’s where the magic happens.”

On challenges of playing the horn: “…it holds up the strongest mirror to the player if that makes sense… however you are feeling, however your body is responding, your horn will hold up a mirror to that.”

OPEN CELLO CLASS

Our donors generously support ANAM musicians, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the ANAM program. What many may not realise is that for musicians who have moved interstate and are away from family and friends, these donors also become a crucial ‘cheer squad,’ providing encouragement and building personal, often lifelong, connections.

Recently, we had the pleasure of inviting our donor community to a behind-the-scenes event – an open cello class led by Head of Strings and Cello, Howard Penny. Supporters enjoyed a performance-ready rendition of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations by Max Wung (WA) and a preview of the second movement of Haydn's Cello Concerto with Joshua Jones (QLD).

If you'd like to learn more about supporting a musician or donating to ANAM, please contact Sylvia Hosking at [email protected]

In late August, ANAM’s Head of Percussion, Peter Neville, alongside ANAM alum Alexander Meagher, joined forces with ANAM percussionists to perform Gérard Grisey's The Black of the Star (Le Noir de l'Étoile), a pioneering work of spectral music that blends pulsar sounds with the acoustic richness of percussive timbres. Both performances were sold out, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attended.

We extend our thanks to the musicians for creating such an immersive and stimulating sonic environment, to Nathan Ellul for his brilliant light design, and to the entire team for managing the logistical demands of this unique event. Here are some highlights from the open rehearsal!

"The sheer scale of the production was like no other WASO has done before. Before the music even started it was bewildering to look up and around, anywhere, and see a musician in their seat – on stage, at the organ, in the stalls and even in the dress circle."
