SELECTED WORKS FROM SARAH’S RECENT EXHIBITION, NOTHING NEW

What is the language of that which we discard?

What potential are we missing when we impose our assumptions onto materials?

Do I really need to buy new materials to make my creative work?

I set myself the challenge of not purchasing any new materials for my arts practice in 2023.

This constraint led me to investigate ways to use often-overlooked materials considered “waste”, and explore new construction methods like weaving and basketry (ideas which then fed back into my ceramic works.)

Throughout the year, many recurrent themes emerged- deconstruction and recreation, making wholes out of separate pieces, distortion of structure and the vessel.

In Nothing New, I shared all of the material research undertaken throughout the year, with a display of tests and experiments showcasing the creative potential of these unlikely materials. I hope that this information will help spark new ideas and demonstrate the abundance that is hiding all around us!

The body of work that I created in my Nothing New Year included a series of coiled vessels made in varying media (soft plastics, wire, ceramic and more). The works investigated the phenomena of connections and intersection across materials and ideas.

FIRST FLOOR GALLERY //

Flowers (2024) is a sculptural work composed of repurposed mice skeletons. The work takes the natural symmetry of the skeletal system and re-arranges it into a fractal composition of flowers. These ‘corpse-flowers’ are budding and in bloom respectively, but in reality their structural materials are long dead.

In just the past 200 years since colonisation, 60 species of Australian plants have already gone extinct. This work confronts the nature of a species’ death and our collective sense of responsibility towards ecological preservation. If conserving a species means collecting it in an artificial container whilst its naturally occurring population slowly creeps towards zero, then that species may end up as little more than a reminder of what has been done to it.

// Luna is a Melbourne based art educator and emerging artist. She often works with graphite pencil and natural materials and across the field of drawing, installation and sculpture. Her work have been exhibited locally in Melbourne as well as internationally in the UK and China.

Title: Intimacy

Often, we are so caught up on the outcome of projects, we lose the ‘spirit’ of tinkering and creating.

We decided to discard the pressure of outcomes and let the materials guide us…

‘Intimacy’ is a thought exercise using
Play as the driving force for our making process.

Leading up to the show, we met once a week, using primarily materials and tools we already had on hand. (Most of the photos we took were taken on our phones).

During our afternoon tea catch ups we would chat about what's happened in the week before, always somehow linking back to reflections on our own relationships to intimacy and connection.

We stripped old electric wires to their cores and scoured the studio for debris and useful bits-and-bobs to play and tinker with.

The result is a series of works confined only by our materials and imagination.

You could see these objects as: 'Gadgets for a creature learning to experience intimacy'. //

I am Makiko Ryujin, born in Japan, Narm/Melbourne based artist.
I live for art. But creating new ones recently became forceful. Something was not quite right.

Workshop with Nadia once a week was my therapy time to gain joy in creating something new and keep my life going:) Hey, it works! //

I am Nadia Cao-Alahanathan
Based in Naarm (Melbourne). I am a Maker who is allured by the role that objects play in representing and speaking for the collective and its culture.

I want to learn the how and why of people, their communities and individual stories.
I enjoy the process of sharing through storytelling and the dialogues that unfold..
I hope to create works that express the themes brewing from collecting new contexts, relationships and spaces.

I also love playing in the studio with Kiko!

EXHIBITION //

FIRST FLOOR GALLERY //

Rob Lock is a mixed media artist based in Melbourne. His work incorporates different mediums and textures to create visually impressive and stimulating pieces. His vision is to produce his own recognizable brand of art, inviting the viewer to set their own narrative through redefining pop culture symbols with a nostalgic and quirky spin. His mediums are varied including painting & drawing but predominantly now works with airbrushing. Rob has been studying realism portraiture since 2017 with one of the leading airbrush schools in Australia, Airbrush Venturi.

Most recently Rob has started painting on repurposed hardwood fence palings. His hope is to create outdoor artworks that better blends with its natural environment. With a strong love of street art Rob has been heavily influenced by artist such as ‘Rone’, who magically merge their artworks into any given environment. Robs belief is there is a place between street art & fine art, his work moving forward will help to promote & explore that place.
