Southern Splendour was held in Canberra between 24th September and 27th September. This was the Australian Floral Art Assn. 2024 Convention hosted by The Victorian Floral Art Assn. and The Floral Art Guild of Canberra, in Canberra, ACT

Members from several Australian States designed an arrangement for the foyer of the event and the four days consisted of several competitions, Imposé competitions, workshops and demonstrations (by Myhanh Rutledge from Victoria).

Below I have attached photos from the competition designs of Box Hill Floral Art members who attended the conference. (Apologies to anyone I missed!!)

Thursday 5th September

Jodi ran the workshop today. We made a wire tower standing in a ceramic bowl, several sizes of bamboo sticks were arranged around the edge of the bowl and various types of foliage and Singapore orchids were placed in and around the tower to produce a really interesting design. We used scrunched mesh in the bottom instead of Oasis.

We had a really great meeting today, although we missed several of our members for various reasons – and wish them well, from all of us at Box Hill Floral Art.
The bench title was:” Weave your way through” and as we only had 6 entries we decided just to have a Best on Bench which was awarded to Sundrie.

Sundrie designed the following to show our members other ways of weaving: Thank you Sundrie for sharing your ideas.

At our meeting on Thursday 4th July 2024, Cheryl demonstrated a Traditional foliage centerpiece, she then added oranges to highlight the autumn colours followed by a third design where Cheryl added red and yellow peppers which really made the design “pop” with colour.
Thank you, Cheryl.

Jan ran our workshop having made (well Ray her husband did!!) a structure using 4 x upright dowels fixed onto a wooden base. We attached copper wire securely to the top front of the dowel using wire or paper covered wire.
We then attached long test tubes to the top back of the structure using cable ties. I suggest using large test tubes as the stems of the tulips are quite large and with the addition of foliage and water the larger test tubes seem to work better.
Each design was different, and I have attached a video showing all our member’s designs.

Yesterday at Box Hill Floral Art, Jodi demonstrated how to make a chenille bouquet holder, which we all had fun making whilst following instructions!! We then gathered non-woven pink strips of material, using wire, to make a collar for the bouquet holder. We attached our collar to the outside of the holder and placed flowers and foliage to complete our bouquet.
Below is a picture of a small holder made with chenille sticks, the next photograph shows the pink strips of material, having been attached to the holder, and flowers placed through the gaps in the sticks. The last photograph shows an arrangement Jodi designed having placed the chenille holder through a round twig wreath.
We then shared a delicious lunch, celebrating 73 years of Box Hill Floral Art.

Good Afternoon,
Today at Box Hill Floral Art our bench title was A Crecent Design. Unfortunately we only had three arrangements to judge, so we held a vote amongst the members – and Beverley’s design was judged the winner. Thank you girls for putting on the bench!!
