✨NEW EVENT ALERT✨

Are you ready to be mesmerized✨ by this new take on an old🎭 classic?!!

⚜🎬Bogan Shakespeare Presents Romeo & Juliet🎭🎟

'Bogan Shakespeare' asks one question and one question only; what if 'The Bard of the Avon' had been born today in WA. What if we could take timeless prose and make it timely. What if we could take the academically dense and make it genuinely accessible. What if Shakespeare but funny as f**k.

A satirical retelling of the most iconic of Shakespeare’s works, Bogan Shakespeare is accessible to any audience, whether you’ve read all thirty-seven plays, just watched the Baz Luhrmann movie or haven’t seen a show since that horrible two hours you spent watching your 14-year-old nephew in his school play. This show has something for everybody. Fancy a love story? We got you. Love your sport? So do we.
Like a cheeky murder from time to time? Who doesn’t. Bogan Shakespeare will give you everything short of a never-ending packet of Tim-Tams, and believe me-we tried that one too.

Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Ellenbrook where we lay our scene. One a Dockers family the other an Eagles family. On the eve of the fabled finals derby. From ancient grudge breeds new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. Basically, it’s about to kick off, you get the idea.

History of Alice Cummins 1898-1943

Leading up to the anniversary of Alice Mary Cummins's death (27-06-1943), the community and culture team have noticed some unusual occurrences. There have been reports of lights flickering and curtains opening, which are believed to be connected to Alice making her presence known. Coincidence, some would say but we believe otherwise.

Have you experienced anything unusual while at the theatre? that you may think is related to Alice? We'd love to hear your stories!!!

So where does Alice's story start? Truth be told, only Alice knows!

Read on for part of her story.

Alice Mary Cummins (1898-1943), the businesswoman, was born probably on 31 March 1898 in Adelaide, the only child of James Hurtle Cummins, a publican from Victoria, and his wife Mary, née Ryan. James moved to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, but Alice attended Loreto Convent, Norwood, Adelaide, where she did well in languages, drawing, and music. She studied at the Elder Conservatorium and played the cello in local ensembles. Weakened by severe influenza in 1923, she abandoned both her musical activities and her ambition to study medicine. Instead, she read law at the University of Adelaide (LL.B., 1928) and served her articles with the solicitor Percy Hague; although admitted to the South Australian (1928) and Western Australian (1930) Bars, she never practiced..... To be continued.

DO YOU KNOW THE HISTORY OF THE CUMMINS THEATRE?!

Cummins Theatre opened on the 11th October, 1928. It was built by James Cummins, a Kalgoorlie Brewer and businessman. He, with the help of his daughter Alice Cummins, ran the successful Kalgoorlie brewing & Ice company, and was on the board for the Cremorne Theatre in Coolgardie.

Alice was an accomplished cellist, and the family love for the performing arts emboldened Cummins to build a theatre in Merredin, where he also planned to build another brewery.

Cummins bought and demolished The Tivoli Theatre in Coolgardie, and transported the pressed tin ceilings, proscenium arch, raked seating, and fly tower to Merredin by train. The wooden floors and wooden beams in the fly tower are Oregon wood, shipped over from the states.

Originally planned to be a wooden and tin structure, Cummins was instructed by the Department of Public Works that this would be inappropriate, and if the Theatre was to be rebuilt, it must be done with bricks.

He bought disused and de-licensed hotels in the goldfields, demolished them, and used the bricks to shore up the Theatre. Because of their Goldfields origins, the legend goes there is gold in the bricks.

Would you like to hear more about the history or take a tour of Cummins Theatre? Stop by the Theatre Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
