Indigenous Smoking Ceremony - Friday from 6pm

The New Lambton Eagles will host a community smoking ceremony this Friday evening (6pm July 5) in conjunction with Northern NSW Football's Indigenous Round.

Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council Land Council chief executive Kumarah Kelly (pictured) will welcome everybody and conduct an acknowledgement of country.

The ceremony will also feature members of performance group Wanggaliyn Barrayga, which translates as "dancing on country".

Senior players from the New Lambton men's and women's teams will be presented with shirts specially designed by First Nations artist Ray Kelly Junior, who is Kumarah's brother. The ceremony will be staged outside on the former green at Alder Park Sports Club from 6pm on Friday, July 5. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags will fly proudly overhead in recognition of Awabakal's sacred Golden Eagles.

New Lambton and Alder Park club president Clayton Harrison will pay respects to the traditional custodian past, present and future. All club members, family and friends are welcome to attend.

Indigenous Smoking Ceremony - Friday 5 July, for all to enjoy and respect.

The New Lambton Eagles will host a smoking ceremony as part of Northern NSW Football’s Indigenous Round on the beer garden grass of Alder Park Sports Club.

The traditional acknowledgement ceremony, conducted by Worimi Land Council chief executive Andrew Smith, will feature members of the Wanggaliyn Barrayga performance group.

Wanggaliyn Barrayga means “dancing on country” in the local Aboriginal language. Senior players from the New Lambton men’s and women’s teams will be presented with shirts specially designed by First Nations artist Ray Kelly Junior.

The ceremony will be staged on the green at Alder Park Sports Club from 6pm on Friday, July 5, with the Aboriginal flag flying high overhead with the Awabakal’s sacred Golden Eagles.

All club members, family and friends are welcome to attend.
