Jackadder's Music Club

Jackadder's Music Club On the 4th Sun. of each month from 2.30pm to 5.00pm, the West Australian Folk Federation presents entertainment for the whole family at Jackadder’s Music Club

Jackadder’s Music Club was named after a nearby lake in Woodlands. It is around 8 klms north of the Perth CBD. Jackadder’s is part of the West Australian Folk Federation. Carmel Charlton and husband Eric Hancock have been running the club since its inception in 2003. There is a great variety of both professional and amateur performers taking part and often young upcoming performers are included in

the afternoon’s line-up. It is a great opportunity for like-minded musicians to network, build friendships and share their love of music. There is a great mix of music performed and includes Folk, Blues, Country, Jazz, Gospel, Old Timey, Celtic, Traditional and Contemporary. People of all ages enjoy the shows and are encouraged to join in by the performers. Our oldest performer to date was eighty nine and the youngest seven except for the performing pooch 'Poppy' who was only five!! All styles of music are encouraged and verse is also included. We welcome new musicians and appreciate those who come along regularly as performers as well as audience members. We always have an attentive crowd. The show starts at 3pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month except for December and January. Guest performers usually perform 2 sets of 25 minutes and there are also a number of open mic spots. A small PA system is provided for those who require it. As it is quite an intimate venue sometimes people prefer to go unplugged. For more information contact Carmel at [email protected]

On Sunday 24th March Jackadder’s Music Club we will present our final concert. It has been a wonderful 20 years of presenting both established and up and coming artists. Running the club has been a great privilege and we have met many talented musicians. Over the years we’ve had local, interstate and overseas artists.

We have a great line-up on 24th March including Duality (John and Joe Ralph) who play banjo, mandolin and guitar. Also performing will be the Rambling Bilbies, Warralakin, Jake and Johnny, two wonderful young musicians from Wembley Downs who are only eleven years old and compose their own songs! JimJam, who played at Jackadder’s just after it started in 2003, Patrick O'Leary and Stan the Man and of course Lynda and me (Western Songbirds)

We've had great support from the West Australian Folk Federation and the lovely audiences who enjoy and encourage ‘live’ music in the community.

JACKADDER'S MUSIC CLUB
SUNDAY 25th JUNE

Hi Everyone,

We have a lovely performer called Maria Forde from Victoria coming to entertain at Jackadder’s Music Club on Sunday 25th June.

Irish- Australian, Maria Forde has always straddled both sides of her heritage in her songwriting. Incorporating the sweet melodies, that are the trademark of the Irish musical heritage, with observations of Australia, along with her personal experiences, Maria has blossomed into one of Australia’s premier songwriters. Her first album - “Will You Dance With Me?” - features the title song, written for a friend’s wedding, that has become a theme for weddings, in Australia and internationally, by Maria’s original and various cover versions. The trend, in Maria’s writing, to incorporate both her Irish origins and Australian sensibilities, are heralded by “Waltzing Matilda, My Darling” - a song about the torn spirits of the immigrant to both their country of birth and their adopted land, Australia. Maria’s endless quest is to improve her musicianship, her songwriting craft and the desire to communicate to the listener. Already blessed with an angelic voice, Maria has grown into a masterful interpreter of her own material, able to totally connect the feeling of the music and words to the emotion of the song. This alone sets her apart from so many singer/songwriters. Since relocating to Trentham, in rural Victoria, Maria has begun to incorporate more of the wonder and fragility of the Australian bush into her work. Throughout her career, Maria has toured constantly, performed at numerous festivals and built a solid and dedicated fan base, both in Australia, and internationally .www.mariaforde.com

"Maria Forde is a fine singer and a gifted songwriter. Her lyrics often reflect an understanding of, and compassion for the human condition, with all its triumphs and disasters, all it’s bright peaks and dark corners. At her live performances she presents her songs with sincerity, passion and more than a dash of humour and these very human attributes, along with her fine singing voice, is why she invariably establishes such a seemingly effortless rapport with her audiences". Eric Bogle.

JACKADDER'S MUSIC CLUB
Sunday 28th May
Jackadder's is happening on Sunday 28th May. Our special guest performers are Fortriu. The are a 3-piece band that draws heavily from the Scottish tradition performing both tunes and songs with a Celtic connection. Consisting of Phil Roeterdink (Vocals, guitar and mandolin), Graeme Watt (Fiddle, whistles and Pipes) and Ian Cooper (Bodhran, low whistle and guitar). The band came together recently through their involvement with the Scottish Stramash session group which also includes such Wanneroo Folk Club luminaries as Jamie McKinnon and Jim McGuire. Phil, a veteran of the WA folk scene, has played with Penny Farthing, Blackboy Jam & Loaded Dog. Graeme is a member of the Gallus Ceilidh band and became acquainted with Ian through their joint involvement with the Perth Metro Pipe Band. But why called Fortriu? Well, Fortriu was an ancient Pictish region in Scotland traditionally believed to be located in and around Perth in central Scotland. So, being located in and around Perth in WA, why not?
Lynda and I will also be performing with our duo. With WA week approaching we'll be including the songs"Ancient Rock Art" about the beautiful Aboriginal rock carvings that are thousands of years old, "My Nullarbor Home" and "Beautiful Denmark".
Venue: Wembley Downs Scout Hall, 7 Dover

Songs and stories of Whalers, Shearers, Drovers, Miners, Drillers, Fishermen, and all those women, men, kids and dogs who make up this great land of ours. From playing around campfires on the Nullarbor Plain, singing in wild Irish themed Kalgoorlie pubs, Gascoyne shearing sheds and Murchison community gatherings, Phil is a founding member of Loaded Dog. BLUEGRASS PARKWAY - DON'T MISS IT!

Australia's favourite bluegrass band, Bluegrass Parkway will be performing. They hold true to the origins of this exciting musical genre, capturing the magic of the golden years of bluegrass.

Bluegrass Parkway remains faithful to the 1940s by playing to a single microphone and incorporating strong three and four part harmonies. Whether it be the traditional sounds of Monroe and the Stanley Brothers or material closer to the 'cutting edge', Bluegrass Parkway will thrill you with great picking, strong harmonies and fancy footwork!

Over three decades of touring, along with countless concert performances they have combined to strengthen the band’s reputation as Australia’s most highly credentialed and experienced bluegrass band.

What has helped set the band apart from many others is the priority they have placed upon presenting Bluegrass music in its most authentic form. Bluegrass Parkway has just celebrated its 36th anniversary and since the early part of 1994, they have performed around a single microphone, as was the norm for the pioneers of the genre in the 1940s.

At any Bluegrass Parkway performance the audience can enjoy a taste of bluegrass music 1940s style. Please find a photo attached

JACKADDER’S MUSIC CLUB – Sunday 23rd October
We have been waiting a long time to see this talented lady perform her own songs. The BEV ABELA duo combines Bev’s songs with the awesome skills of Nick Northcott on guitar. You will be taken on a roller coaster ride of emotions with her soulful originals inspired by her life experiences. As she tells the stories behind the songs of love, loss and life, there will be tears and laughter, but she will cradle you softly with her warm voice, lush melodies, and unique sense of humour.
After many years with “Cat among the Pigeons”, Bev has taken flight and launched not only a solo career but also her debut album “Heartfelt” which is now receiving air play in the UK, USA and here in Australia.

Born in the UK but raised in Canada and Australia, the diverse cultures encountered in each country have carved their place in Bev’s history and as such, have a part to play in her original songs. Come and enjoy the ride!

Hello Everyone,
Jackadder's event this Sunday 18th September.
We have two fine acts performing.

Harley and Brown are a pair of singer-songwriters who recently teamed up to co-write and perform songs that connect with audiences at a deeply emotional level. They are Tim Harley on vocals and guitar, and Suzanne Brown on vocals, piano, bass and cello. Tim has been performing as a soloist for many years. Suzanne has been performing for 15 years. (You will remember her as part of JimJam.) Many of their co-written songs were developed during periods of covid isolation this year. These songs have become the basis of their upcoming album. While their original songs may be works of fiction, they love well-crafted ballads that speak to the heart of being human and the fragility of love in this modern, crazy world.

We are pleased to have "The Rambling Bilbies" at Jackadder's. They have burrowed through the music archives again to present a variety self-penned contemporary ballads and well known favourites. They have been performing together around WA for many years at clubs, festivals, schools, dances, concerts, birthday parties, etc.. The Bilbies are Rob Oats on Guitar & Vocal, Jill Oats on Flute, clarinet & vocal, Amanda Myers on Fiddle. http://www.thebilbies.com.au/
Venue: Wembley Down Scout Hall, 7 Dover Crescent.

Hi Everyone,

Well we had Jackadder's at the new venue. Great location and good facilities.

On Sunday 28th Tea and Whisky are coming to entertain. There's is a musical meeting of the whimsical with the full-bodied, and of a lazy Sunday vibe with the intensity of a passionately-lived life. Alex Hey, commonly known as Alex-the-cellist, and Raelene Bruinsma, singer/ songwriter/storyteller/vocal teacher and community choir director, join forces to bring you a feast of voice, cello, flute, occasional percussion, and several varieties of guitar, served up in varying combinations in the service of song. Our repertoire is a surprising mix of lively and soulful covers and originals, and our arrangements sparkle with hints of musical influences from a variety of musical genres. Most of all, we share music because it’s fun.

ANNABEL
On Sunday 19th December we welcome Annabel, a wonderful 18 year old singer with an eccentric flare and an angelic voice. She has loved music from a young age and was singing before she could talk. As time went on she progressed from the school choir to lead roles in musicals such as Killer Queen in “We Will Rock You” and developed a passion for the 70’s; now greatly influenced by artists like Queen, Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie. With the help of her vocal coach, Sonja D’Anne, she is developing her skills and image with the hopes of one day forming a band and rocking the stage just like her idols once did.

FOUR ON SIX featuring
GILLIAN CATLOW & CHARLES HOERNEMANN
https://youtu.be/OufNhHAVx-Y
Violin–guitar duo with a difference - class, fun, romance, groove, nostalgia...everything a music-lover could wish for.
Gillian Catlow, free-lance violinist and founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, spent 20 years in Germany and Austria playing with some of the most illustrious orchestra’s in Europe. While living in Munich Gillian met Charles Hoernemann who had begun his performing career at 17. After working as a recording artist in Paris, Brussels and Cologne he moved to Munich, where he quickly became the most sought after studio guitarist.
Since reconnecting in Western Australia in 2009, Gillian and Charles have developed their own distinctive musical style and have released four instrumental albums.
2021 has been devastating and life-changing for Gillian and Charles. On 1st February the Wooroloo bushfire ripped through the couple’s Gidgegannup property, destroying the home they had just moved to 15 weeks earlier.
Apart from the three violins and one guitar they took with them when they fled the approaching fire, everything else, including 19 guitars, a 1927 Steinway grand piano, extensive LP collection, stage equipment and books, was turned to ash.
They are now living in South Fremantle, taking the time they need to start afresh. Copies of their last two CDs, Vol 3 (mixed genre) and Four on Six Plays the Beatles, can be purchased at the performance.
