‘Reading the Signs’ and ‘Endless Conversation’ by Sue Jo Wright is exhibiting in the ‘You’re Okay’ foyer space / cafe at the City of Sydney Creative Studios (CoSCS).
In this video, Sue Jo tells us about her work, ‘Reading the Signs’.
Transcript:
“In ‘Reading the Sings’, vintage napkins adorned with Auslan signs in red thread, redefine the cafe experience. Each napkin serves as a tool for communication facilitating interaction and ordering around the counter.
As cafe staff learn Australian Sign Language, these napkins symbolise inclusivity and bridge the gap between deaf and heading visitors.
“Reading The Signs” celebrates the significance of small gestures in making profound difference within the deaf community.
It is a testament to the transformative power of accessibility, fostering joy and connection, one stitch at a time.”

"A highly respected mystic told me not so long ago that it was time to ‘Bury The Beast.’ In this next offering in a canon of autobiographical work we eagerly meet mid-burial to collaborate on this rite of renewal. The voice as a limb. The body as a witness. A testament to the Goddesses and Goddexx’s that lit the way. A charge of sensual, poetic, dancing hope. Something we make together, part torch song, part workshop. Breath, Body, Balm, Beyond.
Bury The Beast is about fire. It is about learning how to tend to a fire that can crack open, light the way and create life. A fire that has assisted in cauterising wounds, but threatens to implode, burn out or rage uncontrollably if mismanaged or insulted.
Bury The Beast is an ongoing ecosexual wish towards flesh, force and the fecund.
How do we play with, respect, channel, bury and make kin with the beasts of our personal histories as they connect to a greater shared story? If you compost a sex clown, what remains?
Join me in this first iteration of a new ongoing project seeded in ‘Thank You Body’. Space is limited. Your support via attendance and collaboration is potent force for ongoing independent and communal making. We will build this together. Thank you for meeting us here.
The work will discuss flesh, sensuality, violence, ecogrief and hope. It will contain nudity, loud noises and body modification.
I acknowledge the Country that I make and live on, Gadigal/Bidjigal. I express my respect for this Country and Elders. I express my respect and solidarity with First Nations people globally.
