AUTO TUNE is going to the Opera House!

Another Flying Nun success story to kick off your weekend is AUTO TUNE by re:group. Developed during season 7 of The Flying Nun, AUTO TUNE was a hit (wolf mask and all) performing to sold out audiences across all performances.

We’re very proud to have watched the project develop and grow since, with AUTO TUNE now premiering 4-7 September 7pm in the Studio theatre at the Opera House.

Don’t miss out on the best gig theatre you’ll ever see!

Congratulations to re:group and the entire AUTO TUNE team

‘Nature is Healing’ by Too Rude is now available to watch ON-DEMAND!

As part of Season 8 of The Flying Nun, ’Nature is Healing’ tells the impossible story of the Australian Bush Turkey and its domination of Sydney’s North Shore.

Part performance lecture, part hymn, and part transformative bush doof, ‘Nature is Healing’ is a new performance work about the relationships between human and non-human animals sharing urban environments. Based on the story of the Australian bush turkey, ‘Nature is Healing’ spotlights this misjudged scrub-dweller and its fight against the gentrification of urban areas.

The Flying Nun On-Demand was created to give audiences the opportunity to catch up on performances that they might have missed, or to re-watch crowd favourites. From the comfort of your own home, on the bus, in the park, as long as you have your device, immerse yourself into world of creative risk-taking and counter-culture at The Flying Nun.

‘Reading the Signs’ and ‘Endless Conversation’ by Sue Jo Wright is exhibiting in the ‘You’re Okay’ foyer space / cafe at the City of Sydney Creative Studios (CoSCS).

In this video, Sue Jo tells us about her work, ‘Reading the Signs’.

Transcript:

“In ‘Reading the Sings’, vintage napkins adorned with Auslan signs in red thread, redefine the cafe experience. Each napkin serves as a tool for communication facilitating interaction and ordering around the counter.

As cafe staff learn Australian Sign Language, these napkins symbolise inclusivity and bridge the gap between deaf and heading visitors.

“Reading The Signs” celebrates the significance of small gestures in making profound difference within the deaf community.

It is a testament to the transformative power of accessibility, fostering joy and connection, one stitch at a time.”

Next up at The Flying Nun is ‘Double Act’ by Sabrina Muszynski and Sarah Kalule.

‘Double Act’ is a dynamic double bill by Sabrina Muszynski (2nd Skin) and Sarah Kalule (Fancy Jazz Dance). Through transformative deconstruction and introspection, each solo performance reimagines and celebrates the dancers’ cultural roots, propelling contemporary dance into untapped possibilities.

2nd Skin is a riveting exploration of visceral movement and Scottish Highland dancing. Tradition and innovation converge as two bodies intertwine in videography and live performance - one remaining in tradition, while the other departing into new movement pathways.

A Fancy Jazz Dance is a hilarious and entertaining work that pays homage to Jazz Dance’s “Golden Age” and flair. Weaving together movements inspired by Bojangles, The Nicholoas Brothers, and Fosse, an ingenious cocktail of performative dialogue unfolds – plunging into the heart of the performer’s multifaceted experiences.

Witness the enthralling synergy of ‘Double Act’ - where tradition meets innovation, boundaries blur, and new artistic horizons beckon.‘Double Act’ has a relaxed start time, doors open from 7.45 pm on Friday and Saturday night. The performances will begin at 8pm.

“Spoons, is from us to you. And we hold it together” - Saskia Ellis.

Hear from 'Spoons' co-creator Saskia Ellis who beautifully articulates the creative rationale and dramaturgy behind their incredible new work in development:

"'Spoons' evolved to carve out the spaces that held intersections with graciousness, generosity, equity, grievings, unanimity, and the collective desires for deconstructing systems and reimagining realms. Not one of us is free until we all are, and if our lungs do not bleed to this effect, there is no substance to our art. The ongoing project of Spoons is constructed entirely of the hearts, souls, tears, dreams, desires, grievings, aches, and surrenderings, of all who have woven this work together.

We are hand stitching the realms that are by and for us, that preface reclamations of softness as forms of resistance. A reclamation for the intersected, the marginalised, the crips, the q***rs, the Others, the outcasts; A softness that derives from violence. To carve spaces that amplify our exigencies coalescing seamlessly with our art, performance, installation, realms, worlds.. In the dreams that our inclusion might become intentional meldings, and not additional translations that subjugate us to an afterthought.

This is a dialogue between disabled performer and disabled audience member, it is not; the disabled educator and the able-bodied audience member…

Spoons prefaces disabled softenings, intersectionality and Otherness. And thus, of course, inevitably, carries ; the grief, the tears, the aches, the surrenderings, the vicarious and broken dreams, the community, the loving, the holding, and the dreaming.

Spoons, is from us to you. And we hold it together."

Meet the creators of ‘Spoons’, on this Friday night at The Flying Nun!

SASKIA ELLIS (they/them) is a settler to so-called Australia, and a multidisciplinary genderq***r and disabled artist. They are currently based on Gadigal, Dharug, and Dharawal Land. Saskia presently inquires of illimitable orthogonality in tangible, physiological, and ephemeral encapsulations. Reclamations of softness, and the endeavours to redefine, repurpose, and relocate homes for our bodies and nonlinear anthologies. Saskia prefaces a multidisciplinary approach to intersectionality and accessibility. Taking care to cultivate inquisitive, equitable, and intentional; language, movement, improvisation, installation, and theoretical embodiment. Curating ever expansive, equitable and inclusive understandings of each and Otherness.

JENNY TRINH (she/her) is a Western Sydney artist and Wytchings is her project. Growing up, Jenny would often be found in the art room, headphones on and doodling until the blank pages of her sketchbook were filled up. Those times with her head in the clouds always brought her comfort – she has always been enamoured by the teleportive nature of music. In 2018, she participated in New Age Noise (formerly known as All Girl Electronic) where she explored electronic music production properly for the first time, creating dreamy, film-inspired sounds evoking that of space and water. She has also performed at a variety of shows from debuting at 2019’s ‘Club 4A’ to 2022’s ‘Essential Tremors’ curated by Liars’ Angus Andrew. Furthermore, she has collaborated with a number of other wordly artists like Red Rey, Saskia Ellis & Jada Narkle to create accompanying soundscapes for their movement pieces, which have been showcased during programs including Soft Centre, Sydney World Pride, Yirramboi Festival and Marrugeku.

Risk Everything

It is a showcase of the outcomes from Performing Arts residencies with Brand X. By its very nature, we celebrate the fringe, alternative and contemporary counter-culture, contributing multi-disciplinary creative risk-taking to the East Sydney Creative Precinct.

We support artists by providing low-cost resources that encourage experimentation by reducing the financial barriers of developing and presenting new work to audiences in Sydney. The Flying Nun by Brand X offers a performance program for new ideas open to EOI.

So come and see something raw, something beautiful, something strange in the heart of Darlinghurst. Your presence will support Sydney’s Independent Artists with income, feedback and the opportunity to take their new ideas to the next level. Risk Everything.
