In a recent opinion piece regarding the Carstairs Horticultural and Craft Show, attention is brought to the Town of Carstairs events calendar and the recent change from a 2024 show date to a 2025 show date.
Unfortunately, the speculative statement “It has been decided to see how many will miss this event.” is used to elucidate the cause of our show date change, without communication or clarification with the Carstairs Horticultural and Craft Show Committee.
The Carstairs Horticultural and Craft Show has been actively involved in inspiring and bringing together all ages of our community’s passionate gardeners, crafters, and artisans, but cannot continue to do so without community support.
Following our 2023 show, many of our valued and experienced committee members stepped down after many long hours and years of commitment. This being said, the committee has struggled to find committee volunteers, able to commit to the eight-month planning period, required to run the show.
In addition, the committee has struggled to obtain sponsorship within our small community and efforts to extend beyond our community and obtain corporate sponsorship proved unsuccessful.
In an effort to re-engage and meet the needs of our community, the 77th Annual Carstairs Horticultural and Craft Show has been optimistically delayed until 2025. The current show structure is being further evaluated to see how to best meet the needs of our participants, with an emphasis on our junior participants, while working within our sponsorship constraints. We are actively continuing to look for volunteers to aid in this evaluation/restructuring process to make our 2025 Horticultural and Craft Show a success, in addition to exploring educational opportunities and sessions, hands-on crafting etc.
In response to the posed question “Will you miss the Carstairs Horticultural Show?”, I hope the answer is “yes”. Without support from our community, whether through volunteerism or sponsorship, many of the events enjoyed locally will not be able to continue. That being said, we must evolve to meet the needs to the community and are hopeful that we can bring new inspiration and excitement for 2025.
