Stormkill Dulse!
While I recommend that folk new to seaweed foraging stick to harvesting live (ie. still attached to the rocks) seaweed, once you get a bit more experienced, freshly storm-washed specimens are fair game too.
The key is to go out soon after a storm, and be experienced enough to know what fresh specimens look and taste like. Harvesting like this has some parallels with assessing roadkill!
This is a pristine bit of dulse (Palmaria pamata), ripped from the rocks by the weekend’s storm and deposited in a much more accessible position on the beach. I usually have to scramble way out on the rocks to the kelp beds in a short low tide window to get to it, but managed a bagful of meaty, chewy, nourishing perfection on a gentle stroll yesterday.
Apart from the timing soon after a storm, key indicators of its freshness are that its lost none of its deep red colour, and a nibble reveals it still has lots of its meaty flavour.
I’m super happy and grateful to eat this. Others may be more fussy…

Hi Everyone
I hope your ready for the Exhibition Park craft show this weekend, we will be there. It’s been a few years since we’ve been in the city with our products, come and stick up. Don’t forget to ask about out Chef’s Club, it’s a wonderful way to try new flavours each month.
