Kainai
Cree
Chipewyan
Dene
Sarcee
Stoney

RIGHT CHOICE is proud to be partnered with First Nation communities from all three of the territories in Alberta and also territories in British Columbia.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a crucial aspect of workplace safety that cannot be ignored. There is a vast range of hazards that employees may face that could cause injury or illness, and the proper use of PPE will help to prevent or minimize exposure to those hazards. It's crucial for both employers and employees to understand the importance of using the appropriate PPE and adhering to safety protocols.

There are 7 basic types of PPE:
1. Head - Hard hats
2. Eye/Face - Goggles or Safety Glasses
3. Respiratory - Masks
4. Hearing - Ear plugs/muffs
5. Hands - Gloves
6. Feet - Steel toe boots/shoes
7. Body - Reflective vests and fireproof clothing

Employers are responsible for providing you with the required PPE, so make sure you are using the correct type of PPE depending on the type of workplace environment you find yourself in. Having the right tools and attitude will ensure you are able to complete your job requirements successfully and safely. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, if you see something, say something.

April 28th is marked annually in Canada as the National Day of Mourning. This is a day dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered illness or injury on the job or experienced a work related tragedy.

In 2023 Alberta lost 165 individuals due to work related illness or injury. The Day of Mourning is a powerful reminder for all of us and a time to renew our commitments to improving health and safety in our workplaces and prevent further work related incidents.

Please join with us at 11am as we have a moment of silence to remember all those who have been impacted by work related illnesses and injuries.

Spring has arrived and with it comes warmer temperatures and budding plants/trees. This also means its time for the bears to come out of their winter hibernation and they will be extra hungry as they begin to venture out of their dens.
As a catering company working out in remote areas we have a responsibility to ensure we are taking the right steps to remain safe while we work in the bears environment.
Here a few important safety tips that will help keep you safe while out in the wilderness:
1. Properly store food and garbage
2. Keep a clean camp/work area at all times
3. Do not feed bears under any circumstances
4. Avoid areas that are typical feeding spaces such as berry patches, beehives, garbage pits etc...
5. Make sure someone always knows where you are and when to expect you back
6. Carry bear spray/bangers and make lots of noise
7. Always be aware of your surroundings

By following these tips we can make sure that not only are we safe, but also minimizing our impact on the bears environment.

🌏Happy Earth Day🌏

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated each year on April 22nd that aims to bring awareness and support for environmental protection and advocacy. We would like to encourage everyone to think about ways that they can help and make a positive impact on the Earth, today and every day.

Here are some simple things we can all do to help protect our planet:

- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Conserve water
- Pick up litter in your area or volunteer for a community cleanup
- Ride your bike, walk, or take the bus to help reduce carbon emissions
- Purchase sustainable products and be mindful of the waste you produce

How will you celebrate Earth Day? Let us know!

Alberta's Wildfire season started early this year on February 20th, which means its time to get any fire permits needed in place and be sure you always up to date on the current fire status. Last year saw a devastating and record breaking wildfire season, so here a few important safety tips to remember as we enter into that season again.

1. Keep an eye on local news and make sure you are aware of warnings in your area. You can download the Alberta Wildfire app to help keep up to date.
2. Maintain an emergency kit stocked with essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, battery-powered or crank radio, flashlight and extra batteries.
3. If you have a vehicle make sure you keep the tank full in case fuel stations lose power or have to close. Keep a vehicle emergency kit and include and extra phone charger.
4, Plan and know your escape route(s).
5. Make sure all fires/camp fires are 100% out prior to leaving them unattended.

67% of wildfires in Alberta are caused by people, so lets make sure we are all doing our part to ensure we do not further contribute to this devastating problem.

You can call 310-FIRE to report any wildfires.

With the fluctuating temperatures we have been experiencing, its important to remember that the ice covering ponds, lakes, rivers, creeks etc... can be very unpredictable. Here are just a few of many important safety tips to keep in mind as we make our way through the Spring season!!

1. Measure ice thickness in several locations.
2. Spring ice is rotten ice - thawing and refreezing causes unstable and unsafe ice surfaces.
3. Never go out on ice alone.
4. Stay off ice surfaces above moving water.
5. Take Safety Equipment with you.

March 22nd is World Water Day and is an annual United Nations Observance that focuses on the importance of access to water. World Water Day celebrates water and strives to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. This years theme is "Water for Peace", which is aiming to bring awareness to the many different ways that access to water impacts world peace as a whole. We are so fortunate to have the luxury of clean, running water and we often take this for granted because of the ease of access we experience in most parts of Canada. When able, please do your part to help protect our most vital resource.

Today marks the beginning of a new season filled with blooming flowers, warmer days and new adventures. It also means you are probably eager to get out and start yard maintenance and spring clean the outside of your house! In keeping with our company philosophy, here are some helpful tips to keep you safe:

1. Ensure you read and understand the manufacturer's instructions before using a power tool. The equipment should only be used for its intended purpose. Inspect equipment before use to make sure that it is in good working order and safety guards are in place.
2. Remove rocks, sticks, toys and tools from the lawn before mowing. Be sure to keep children and pets away from the mower.
3. Never mow or use electrical equipment in wet conditions. A lawnmower can overturn on a slope or wet grass and rocks and debris can fly out from underneath. Never operate tools with frayed cords or during wet conditions as there is potential for electric shock.
4. If the blades of a power lawnmower become clogged, turn off or unplug the machine before clearing it. Use a stick or other tool to remove the clogged debris in case the blades complete a rotation after clearing.
5. Always wear proper gear when using power tools, such as work boots, gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection.
6. Last, but not least, remember to wait until temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius before starting yard work. Many butterflies, bees and other pollinators are hibernating in dead leaves and hollowed out stems of last years' plants. Please leave them "bee"!

Sunday, March 10th 2024, marked the beginning of Ramadan and here at Right Choice there are many Muslim staff members and guests who will be observing Ramadan until April 9th, 2024. Chef Omar cooked up some special late dinners for our clients and staff who are now observing.

Ramadan runs on different dates each year, beginning and ending with the crescent moon and is a month long fast observed from sunrise to sunset. Before sunrise, a pre-dawn meal is consumed, known as "Suhoor". The fast breaks at sunset, typically with water and dates, before consuming a delicious meal known as "Iftar". Ramadan is also a month of devotion, self-reflection and gaining a spiritual connection. Its about being grateful for what you have as well as taking care of your family, neighbours and those that are less fortunate.

We would like to remind all those who are observing that RCCC is accommodation to your fast. Please let our kitchen staff know so that food can be put aside and kept hot for you when you break your fast.

Ramadan Mubarak!

Happy International Women’s Day!

We are so blessed to have the most inspiring, intelligent, creative, skilled, and strong group of women as a part of our organization and community. We are able to provide opportunities for women, break barriers, challenge the status quo and help raise each other up. Today we celebrate these women and those that came before so that we can have the lives we do with the ability to make choices to live life as we choose. We are aware that not all women have the choices or options that we do and we need to continue to challenge and make change where it is needed.
