Lovely visit today with Gail and Jim from .j.neville in St. John’s. The business was started 73 years ago by Jim’s father. The newspaper clippings celebrating the store opening is framed on their wall and came from The Daily News, an old St. John’s newspaper no longer in existence. An acquaintance found the newspaper in their home in England and sent it back to the Neville’s. It is now holds a special place in the storefront of their Hamilton Ave Ext. location.

Naranjo is a leader in sustainability efforts that can be seen in every aspect of their operations.

Transport of their beautiful roses between cultivation and post-harvest processing is done in boxes made from recycled materials.

What's even cooler -- Naranjo has their own recycling plant on site. Now that's commitment to the minimizing environmental footprint! 🌍

Frank Jones has a lot of challenges to contend with as a fern farmer. Hurricanes every 4 to 5 years. Ever-increasing costs of shipping boxes and supplies. Flash frosts. Feeder-root feasting pests and various types of fungus. Supporting his employees. He's even been bitten by a rattlesnake in the field. But, one thing he worries about less and less? Maintaining yards and yards and yards of sun-diffusing screening over his fern fields. Instead of continuing with the standard approach of suspending UV-blocking "curtains" over the plants, Frank has transitioned to natural canopy protection. In short, he has begun replacing manufactured netting with strategically planted trees to protect most of his crop. The trees not only better diffuse the light and are more weather-resistant, they are also more environmentally sustainable and better shade those working in the fields. They, and ferns going as far as they eye can see, make walking the C.Frank Jones Fern Ltd. property an near-magical experience.

Have you every heard of 'fancy fern'?
Back in the 50s, lightning struck for Frank Jones -- and changed the fern-growing industry forever! A bolt of lightning hit a tree on the farm, leaving a circle of scorched earth. The ferns grew back but something was different. Frank realized these were no run-of-the-mill leather-leaf. The lightning strike changed the physicality of the plant in the most incredible way -- in its place, the power of nature left a more frilly, delicate-looking variety of the traditional leather-leaf stem. The bonus? This new "branch" of the leather leaf family grew naturally without spores on the fronds, a desirable trait elevating the aesthetic and setting it apart from traditional leather-leaf. Frank named the new fern variety "Fancy Fern" and is proud of its popularity and connection to his family farm.

June 5 is World Environment Day

Focus for 2024 is in part on drought resilience. This presents a great opportunity to highlight the work done by our grower partners around the world in water retention. Rain water is captured in retention ponds that is then cycled back into the greenhouses.

Retention ponds:
-help farmers reduce their reliance on irrigation systems
-help protect against drought and other weather related events
-reduce energy costs
-are good for the environment

Retention ponds are used by our growers in their operations across the world. It's another example of the and approach to flower production that we expect from our business partners.

GROWER SPOTLIGHT:

Meet. C. Frank Jones, owner and operator of C. Frank Jones Ferns Ltd. in Pierson, FL, U.S.A. Frank is 86 years young. He began working his family farm at 16, and still calls the original farm home more than 70 years later. Starting with 10 acres that originally focused on growing oranges and plumosus fern, Frank built the farm "10 acres at a time" to what it is today -- a thriving and evolving farm growing a variety of floral greens. Today, he is proud to have his grandson, Kyle, work alongside him, learning all the tricks of the trade as he prepares to take on the family business.

June is National Indigenous History Month

This amazing illustration is filled with symbolism: an eagle representing First Nations, a narwhal representing Inuit, and a violin representing Métis. They are surrounded by multicoloured smoke that represents Indigenous traditions, spirituality, inclusion and diversity.

Today is National Learn About Compost Day!

Did you know that the process of composting dates back over 12,000 years? There is evidence that the Scots used compost to enhance production on their small farms.

In 2024, the art of composting is alive and well. Whether it's a flower farm in Colombia or your local flower shop, flower waste is collected, composted and the end product - nutrient rich, chemical free soil - is returned to enhance the growing process.

Something so simple has far reaching social and environmental impacts.

World Fair Trade Day came and went in the midst of the hectic Mother's Day weekend. We didn't want to let the occasion pass without acknowledging and celebrating our growers who are Fair Trade Certified.

Fair Trade is defined as "a global movement made up of a diverse network of producers, companies, consumers, advocates, and organizations putting people and planet first".

This is just one of the certifications looks for in its grower relationships. We salute the commitment and investment that this involves
