The 2022 racing season is a wrap and all I can say is wow.

This year was a rollercoaster of hard work, ups, downs and everything in between. From starting the season off at the back of the pack, to lighting on fire. Then within a couple of weeks, qualifying P2 at the biggest event of the year and being one of the quickest cars on track in the second half of the season.

The last race we were comfortably one the top 5 quickest cars on Saturday finishing 3rd and 2nd in the heat races. I was making my way through the field, making passes when about halfway through the feature got clipped in the rear causing a spin and being sent to the back. I can’t say I agree with the towers call to put responsibility on me for the spin but with any sport sometimes the ref makes a bad call. It is what it is and in the last 19 laps we were able to pass half the field to finish 7th or 8th.

I’m so proud of the team, we worked incredibly hard this year and turned a dump truck into a race car! Luck was definitely not on our side however it’s bound to turn around in the future!

Come out tonight to watch AJ and Aaron take on the sportsman division piloting the #51 Neufeld Movers Dodge Challenger. Their driver, Sam Howlett is out with Covid so AJ and Aaron were asked to take the reins and pilot this car to the finish line! Green flag drops at 6pm 🏁

The long anticipated Bridge City 200 was a nail-biter right from practice on the Friday. The 84 team showed up to the track with an unproven suspension set up that we weren’t able to test before due to the fire a few weeks back that melted wiring and burn up some fuel lines. But that didn’t stop us from putting down a very solid lap time and a personal best!

Saturday came and the team knew we had a fast car but weren’t sure how it matched up with the top teams in western Canada. We made a ton on adjustments mainly focusing on front tire camber and the front shocks. Then came qualifying.. the car was an absolute rocket ship on new tires setting the second fastest time and missing pole position by just 0.003 of a second! I think that lap time turned a lot of heads and wow was that satisfying. We finished p2 in the fast group heat race and had a real chance of putting a season best performance for the 200.

The top 4 cars had the opportunity to start at the back for a chance to win an additional $2,900 on top of the $10,000 to win prize so after flip flopping between yes and no I just decided why not. We started at the back of the field and consistently made passes throughout the race and got into p7 or p8 right around the half way point. There were a few wrecks up ahead and all of a sudden we were in contention for a podium putting down identical and sometimes quicker lap times than the leaders. Just over 10 laps to go there was a spin which bunched the field up and put the 84 in p5. Off the restart I couldn’t put it in 4th gear and ended up getting spun out to no fault but my own. With 10 laps to go I was able to salvage a p8 finishing position after making a few passes and catching the leaders but it was too late.

It’s really bittersweet to be one of the quickest cars on the track but miss out on a podium finish.. but that’s just racing. Confidence is at an all time high and the Kelsey Corp #84 powered by CONTECH will definitely be a contender for the win come the last two races of the season. August 19 & September 17 can’t come any quicker!

I would like to share my appreciation to the following:

The 84 crew consisting of Ryan, Cole, Aaron and my dad Leo for putting their blood and sweat into this car and making it into a real threat on the race track. We’ve had a difficult first half of the season but the second half is all ours to take.

The #70 Thunderbolt racing crew of Trent, Matt, Shane and Josh for their expertise in the shop and at the track as well as providing us with replacement parts after the fire.

The #04 Kammer Racing crew of Tim, Kyle, Sean and Patrick for providing replacement parts, helping re-wire the car and helping out on race days.

To Ryan for fixing the burnt carburetor and regulator on such short notice.

To Chris and Dennis for tuning the engine and making sure it ran properly before putting it to the test.

The last couple of weeks were quite the struggle for the 84 team. We had a practice day booked to fix all the front-end issues that have been limiting the performance of the car over the last couple of races. To prepare for this practice session, we put in yet another new front end changing out the spindles and upper control arms. We had a few long nights in the garage and we thought it was ready to go... It wasn’t. After about 4 fast laps in practice, the car showed some promise putting down some decent times but it suddenly ignited into flames. Luckily we were at the track with another team as it took 3 full extinguishers to put out the flames. After the smoke settled it was determined a fuel fitting by the exhaust manifold loosened and spat fuel all over the engine bay. We’ve looked over it some and are confident all the wiring is shot along with the air cleaner/filter, windshield, regulator and a few rubber hoses and boots. We’ve come to a team decision to pull out of the July 26th race. Putting a race car together is very meticulous and requires everything to be set just perfect. This is something we cannot risk rushing since we’ve all seen how a simple loose fitting can light up the car in seconds. The teams going to work hard to get this car well prepared for the 200-lap August 6th race.

The beauty about the racing community is when things like this happen, teams come together and help one another. We’ve already had the 70 Thunderbolt Racing team, the 04 Kammer Motorsports team and the 12 Finesse Racing team offer to help put the car back together which I am so thankful for. I’d like to thank you, my die-hard sponsors/fans who have been there to cheer the 84 team on whether we’re at the top podium or struggling with speed. Like they say, keep your head up and move forward!

Check out last weekend‘s race the Lakeview Insurance Brokers - Martensville 150. The Kelsey Corp #84 powered by Con-Tech General Contractors what is a challenging beast to figure out. A whole new front end set up proved to not be the solution but the 150 straight green flag laps provided the team with a lot of data for more suspension improvements!
