🌸 The World, In Blooms 🌸
The United States, England, Iraq, and Bulgaria all share the same national flower! All of these nations have designated one of the most popular flowers worldwide as the bloom to represent them. We all know red roses represent true love and romance, but did you know they also stand for respect, admiration, courage, and passion?
We carry the iconic red rose in our floral inventory every week, and can understand why four countries felt it was the perfect flower to represent themselves.

The World, In Blooms 🌸
Next up in our series, the Maritimes!

Since 1936, the purple violet (Viola cucullata) has represented New Brunswick as its provincial flower. This little cutie can be spotted even ere in Ontario. It thrives in wet, shady forested areas. It's known as a symbol of modesty and simplicity!

A nod to the ship that brought the Pilgrims to North America, Nova Scotia's provincial flower is the mayflower (Epigaea repens)! They grow under cover of larger trees in moist forest floors. Mayflower grow in pink and white, and have a sweet scent.

Prince Edward Island has appointed the lady's slipper (Cypripedium acaule) as its provincial flower. One of the most unique provincial flowers for all of Canada, the lady's slipper is a perennial part of the orchid family. These beautiful and delicate flowers love bogs, cooler forests, and moss. To the people of P.E.I., lady's slipper represents rarity and the delicate balance of nature.

The pitcher plant (Sarracenia purpurea) are the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador. It's another very unique flower that traps insects to be digested by the plant. These little weirdos can be found thriving in wetlands, bogs, and forests as many of the other provincial flowers of the Maritimes do. Pitcher plants can survive in less than ideal soil conditions because of their carnivorous nature and can digest insects.

Next up, central Canada's provincial flowers!

As most of you are likely aware, Ontario has appointed the trillium as our provincial flower (botanical name Trillium grandiflora)! Despite assumptions, it is not illegal to pick or propagate trillium in Ontario currently. Trillium seeds are primarily dispersed by ants, and are a favourite snack of the white-tailed deer. There are five species of trillium native in Ontario currently!

Quebec changed its provincial flower in 1999 from the Madonna lily (resembling a fleur-de-lis), to the blue flag iris (botanical name Iris versicolor). The change was made due to the Madonna lily not being native to the province. The blue flag iris is most commonly found in swampy areas like marshes, along streambanks and shores. Unlike some other bulb plants, iris rhizomes, leaves, and blooms are poisonous. These gorgeous blooms can grow over 2 feet tall.

Stayed tuned for the last instalment of Canada's provincial flowers next week, the maritimes!

Next up in our series of provincial flowers, the prairies!

Saskatchewan's official flower is the vibrant and eye-catching Western Red Lily (botanical name Lilium philadelphicum L.). These gorgeous flowers bloom from June to August. The bulbs of the plant are edible and Indigenous peoples have many medicinal uses for all parts of the plant.

Manitoba's provincial flower, commonly known as the prairie crocus (botanical name Anemone patens L. var wolfgangiana), isn't a crocus at all! It's actually part of the Ranunculaceae (buttercup) family, despite its name. These adorable little guys are some of the first to bloom in the spring. The prairie crocus loves hot, sunny and dry climates in sandy soil.

Up next in our series is the mountainy landscapes of British Columbia and Alberta!

BC boasts a flowering tree as its provincial flower, the beautiful pacific dogwood (botanical name Cornus nuttallii). The pacific dogwood tree can range from 20-75 feet tall, blooming in spring and late summer or early fall. This gorgeous tree has high tolerance to flooding and naturally occurs along rivers and streams.

Alberta, being one of the few provinces in Canada to have its schoolchildren vote on their provincial flower! The wild rose, botanical name Rosa acicularis. License plates in Alberta are adorned with the wild rose. The fruit of wild roses, rose hips, have many medicinal uses and are commonly made into tea!

The World, In Blooms 🌸
To kick off the official flowers of Canada's provinces and territories, we have the territorial flowers for the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut!

The Yukon's territorial flower is known by its common name Fireweed (botanical name Chamaenerion angustifolium). Fireweed can be recognized by its vibrant pink blooms that are some of the first to pop up after forest fires. Fireweed may not even be present until after a fire has hit a landscape.

Mountain avens has been decided as the official flower of the Northwest Territories, botanical name Dryas octopetala. The bright white blooms grow on this evergreen plant that is lower lying to the ground. It does best in areas where snow will melt early, on gravel and rocky landscapes.

Purple saxifrage (botanical name Saxifraga oppositifolia) has been decided as the territorial flower of Nunavut. Saxifrage thrives in the Arctic climate, most commonly found in tundra, arctic bluffs and rocky crevices. The people of Nunavut enjoy this edible flower that starts bitter, and becomes sweet.

Introducing… The World, In Blooms 🌸
The World, In Blooms will feature the national flower for as many countries as we can find.
We love learning new facts about flowers and love sharing that information with you all even more!

For our first country, we had to start with our very own Canada 🇨🇦
Despite Canada having a flower associated with each province and territory, Canada doesn’t have a national flower! Canada is represented by the beautiful and ever changing maple leaf.
The maple leaf can be seen all across Canada, known for its sweet sap and all that can be made from it. Maple leaves are admired across the world for their striking colours with season changes and their beautiful shapes.
Since Canada doesn’t actually have a national flower, the first leg of this series will feature the flowers associated with each province and territory.
Stay tuned! We hope you enjoy 🫶🏻

Hibisc-YES🌺

These beautiful tropical flowers are here for mother's day. Hopefully you pre-ordered yours because they are B-E-A-U-TIFUL !

Fun fact: The flower can be used to make a natural dye or food colouring - they are edible, however ours come from greenhouses and are treated with pesticides, so if you're ever in California, Hawaii or Mexico, highly suggest you try it! 🌺
