🌸 The World, In Blooms 🌸
Lily of the Valley, botanical name Convallaria majalis, is well-known for being a beautifully dainty and fragrant flower. During Finland's 50th independence celebration in 1976, Lily of the Valley was chosen to represent the country as its national flower.
The delicate flower is associated with May Day celebrations and signals the beginning of spring after a long winter. Despite being a symbol of purity, all the elements of the plant and flower are very toxic.
We wish Lily of the Valley was available to us as a cut flower, but our northern climate just doesn't allow us to use the incredibly delicate flower, but we sure appreciate them in our gardens!

🌸 The World, In Blooms 🌸
The King Protea, botanical name Protea cynaroides, was made South Africa's national flower as recently as 1976, when the nation was making an effort to establish symbols of their diverse landscapes and heritage. We love getting King Protea in the shop because they made such a statement and are one of the more longer lasting flowers, AND easy to dry. Once the flower on the shrub is spent, the seed pod remains for months (or even years) and will not disperse the seeds until after wildfires.

Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), also commonly known as bachelor's button, has been representing Germany as a national flower since 1920. The cornflower represented pride and was worn by German soldiers as an symbol of patriotism, representing resilience and beauty during a difficult time in German history. The striking blue colour of the cornflower is widely recognized and appreciated in the floral world. Cornflower has roots of medicinal use for anti-inflammatory purposes, and was used to treat a variety of ailments. Their petals are often used a decorative garnish due to its edible nature.

The Singapore orchid, formerly known as the Miss Joaquim Vanda orchid is hybrid of Papilionanthe hookeriana and Papilionanthe teres orchids. A Singaporean horticulturalist and orchid enthusiast, Agnes Joaquim is credited as their creator in the 19th century. It was officially named Singapore's national flower in 1981. The blooms are widely recognized for their vibrant pinks and magenta tones in their petals, but there are other colour morphs that exist in nature. Singapore orchids represent the country's unique and diverse identity, natural beauty, and resilience.

The Scottish Thistle, Onopordum acanthium, has been representing Scotland for over 500 years, symbolizing resilience and protection to the people of Scotland. Thistle have been used for medicinal purposes and is appreciated as a cut flower! In gardens, they are often considered a w**d, but as we know - w**ds are subjective! Pollinators still love these guys, despite them being so prickly.

🌸 Let's dive into the anatomy of a flower stem! The stem serves as the main support structure, holding up the flower and leaves. It also transports water and nutrients. Along the stem, you'll find nodes, the points where leaves and buds emerge. A bud is an undeveloped or embryonic shoot that can develop into a flower, leaf, or stem. The petals are the colorful parts of the flower that attract pollinators.

Since we were revamping our flower cooler last week and had to keep minimal stock, we splurged this week and got some fun blooms to use!
