I’ve sat down about a million times to write this post, and it was never enough. Or at least, didn’t feel right or completed or ready. I’ve pages and pages of thoughts and notes, my own mourning journal.

To my mentor, my friend, my sheep/duck farming confidant, and the only guy that ever showed up at the store with a pick up truck full of lab puppies. To the man who for 49 years (!!!) was king of the Uxbridge blooms. How your legacy and friendship has irrevocably changed the trajectory of my own life, and the life of so many others, how I will miss our visits and chats and laughs.

We discussed so many things, but regrettably I never mentioned just how thankful I was for you. I admired your spirit, your stories and your fiery commentary. I resonated with so much of it. Some of your creations and treasures (including two great labs, Dutch and Jewel) stay with me now, a subtle reminder of you.

Rest easy Keith, it was an honour to know you. It’s an honour to bloom for you. 🌺❤️

This is 8!

Another year flies by, another year of blooms! More lessons, more highs, more lows. I’ll tell ya this; there is no greater way to learn about life, love, grief, kindness, the good and the bad this world has to offer than owning a small business. I am the most grateful, the most humbled, the most in love with this community and its resident’s more than ever.

Thank you to the roomies, and for always keeping us laughing and on our toes.

To my , and of course the OG managerial string bean , thank you thank you thank you love you thank you thank you. What a joy it is to bloom with you. I am the happiest surrounded by you three gals, I’m sorry I yell so much and have no filter. (My therapist said I will likely never have a filter, so let’s embrace it.)

Thank you Mother. It know it hasn’t been easy but brighter days are ahead.

Hey and without you there wouldn’t be me, love and cherish you both. Thank you, thank you. Best buddy/pal systems ever! 👯‍♀️👯‍♀️

Uxbridge perhaps I don’t tell you enough, how much of an honour it is to be your bloom babes. The valentines all showed up, we laughed, we bloomed and I could never express just how thankful I am for all of you gracing 14 Brock Street East.

You support us and I try my best to support this community. To support my family farm with 47 rescued misfits of the feathered and furry variety. You support Ontario growers, generations of flower farmers keeping the dream of a family farm alive. You support the commitment to our downtown flower hub. You showed up, bless you.

I appreciate you. I appreciate this community. Since 1961 Keith’s has serviced this town, and I’m trying my best to make sure it’s to 2061. It hasn’t been easy, big vases to fill, but I won’t ever give up on this town and this bloom beacon. And because of you, we continue.

Meet our Readers!

Christina Curry is a flower-slinging, animal-rescuing book-worming kinda gal who has never turned down a dirty martini. When not on bloom duty at her beloved Keith’s Flower Shop she’s often found with her beak (and the beak of various misfit turkeys, chickens, and ducks) in a great book; procured of course from the Heron.

Christina is reading Shut Up, You're Pretty, a short fiction collection by Téa Mutonji, that tells stories of a young woman coming of age in the 21st century in Scarborough, Ont. The disarming, punchy and observant stories follow her as she watches someone decide to shave her head in an abortion clinic waiting room, bonds with her mother over fish and contemplates her Congolese traditions at a wedding.

Shut Up, You're Pretty will be defended by Kudakwashe Rutendo for CBC's Canada Reads 2024 debates in March!
