We are so excited that the inaugural Chinatown in Focus Photo Contest is here! 📷 Photographers of all skill levels in Greater Vancouver are invited to showcase their talent, passion, and unique perspectives in capturing Chinatown. The contest has two themes: "Faces of Chinatown" and "Places of Chinatown."

🏆 Awards for each theme:
- Grand Prize: $500 in cash 💵
- Runner-Up: A copy of the Chinatown Pretty photo book, provided by Foo Hung Curios 📚

Have you ever wondered why it's called a 'Pineapple Bun' (菠蘿包) when there's no pineapple inside? 🍍🥐

The 'Pineapple Bun,' also known as 'Bo Luo Bao' (for Mandarin), or 'bo lo bao' (for Cantonese) is a sweet pastry from Hong Kong that first appeared in the 1940s. But why is it called a Pineapple Bun? 🤔

The Pineapple Bun is a sweet bun with eggs, flour, and sugar. It gets its name from the visual resemblance of its crispy crust and golden-brown top to the texture and pattern of a pineapple's outer skin. 🍍🍞

The pineapple bun is still very popular in cities that Chinese reside around the world, with urban bakeries producing up to 3,000 rolls daily. In 2014, the Hong Kong government even recognized the art of making pineapple buns as part of "Intangible Cultural Heritage." 🎉🇭🇰

Have you ever wondered why it's called a 'Wife Cake' (pronunciation: lou5 po4 beng2 , 老婆餅) and what is the story behind? 🧐

Folklore has it that a woman was sold into slavery to support her poor family. Her husband created a simple but delicious pastry which earned him enough money to bring her back.

Wife Cakes are made with a flaky, pastry crust filled with a sweet, chewy mixture of winter melon, almond paste, and glutinous rice flour. The exterior is golden and slightly crispy, while the filling offers a unique texture and flavour that’s both fragrant and subtly sweet.

In Canada, where multiculturalism is celebrated, Wife Cakes can be found in many Chinese bakeries, especially in cities with large Chinese communities like Vancouver and Toronto. These pastries provide a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine and share a piece of cultural history and storytelling.
