It's been a ver very long time since I was able to photograph the core of the Milky Way. And an even more interesting challenge to edit such a photo!
Incredible black skies and an absolutely magical experience to see. And believe it or not, it was somewhat hazy from wildfire smoke at the time.

Getting a few questions about Post-processing, so I thought I would post a before and after comparison for everyone.

Same shot. The first one is the in camera jpg.
Ev +1.3 , Nikon Vivid Picture Style.
Fine+ jpg quality. Auto White Balance.

Second shot was processed in Lightroom. Same Vivid picture style. I did not change white balance, used WB as shot.

As you can see the edit is essentially adding more punch and contrast via tone mapping through the tone curve adjustment panel and through basic panel, with adjustments to the tone and exposure, shadow, highlight, blacks and white points and mild changes to the calibration panel which nudges the underlying R,G,B mix around at a pixel level. Selective mask adjustments to the sky, dehaze slider to add more contrast.

The added contrast also boosts colour saturation, so no additional Vibrance or Saturation was added, usually I even drop Vibrance into negatives as it can be too much saturation.

The colours, intensity and variation captured by the camera are all visible in the unaltered jpg, which is still a beauty no doubt, but falls a little "flat" in my opinion.

I prefer my Aurora images to pop personally, and the edit reflects that. But I think there is a misconception that "A Lot" is added to the scene in post processing. Not really, It's more about working and massaging the tones that are already there.
