Rooted in the music and pop culture of late 1970s and -80s Australia, Amyl and The Sniffers have an idiosyncratic style marked by maverick mullets and glam rock accessories. Their sound follows suit, bringing together a range of styles from punk to garage to hardcore to rock ’n’ roll, all varieties of primitive rock. Primitive, but by no means amateur. The rough songs are masterly played by Dec Martens (guitar) Gus Romer (bass), Bryce Wilson (drums) and Amy Taylor (voice), mostly at a tempo that will leave you gasping. Their last album ‘Comfort To Me’ was mixed by Nick Launay (who also produced IDLES).

Amyl and The Sniffers will do C***e Island the honours on November 12th.

Three friends make up 13YC aka 13Year Cicada. They use samplers and play instruments: Philip (drums), Christopher (bass), and Zooey (keys and voice) share a background in jazz, a genre they escaped early in their careers not for lack of love, but rather for want of something less elite. What do they want? More DIY. The texts and themes from the third and most recent album were a collective process centred around the redistribution of wealth and methods of resistance against the powers that be. GTA, class struggle, leasing and eviction, trickle-down ideology, and service industry jobs come together.

Bongo Joe Records has proven itself once again as a label with a trusted selection with their latest signing, Baby's Berserk. Late 80s post-punk a lá Maximum Joy meets naive computer drum sounds, all with a touch of calypso and a sprinkling of Tropicália, kind of as if Tom Zé tried to make a wave record on E. The Amsterdam band will most definitely lose their status as an insider tip soon: although they’ve only released a few songs and an EP, they’ve been on a roll: They were guests in Leipzig as support for the Vi**ra Boys and over the summer, they played at some well-known festivals.

The band will take over TANZCAFÉ ILSES ERIKA's stage on the 11th of November!

Not too long ago, Lou Savary and Luc Bersier moved from Switzerland to Brussels. After two mini-albums, the band has recently released their first long-player, "Leviosa" on the Amsterdam label Knekelhuis. They lay out their synth-pop design in just under half an hour. Savary's melancholic spoken word, the pieces’ recurring chanson character, the slight, fragile moments, and the audible affection for the lacking and fragmentary give this music an individuality that has been difficult to come by in this genre.

For his book "Future Sounds - Wie ein paar Krautrocker die Popwelt revolutionierten", published this summer, Christoph Dallach interviewed some of the key figures of the early Krautrock movement, including Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Holger Czukay (all members of Can), Michael Rother (Neu!), Lüül (Agitation Free) and Brian Eno. Their answers create an oral history that stretches far beyond the individual histories of the bands themselves. It is a history that extends back in time – to N**i teachers, postwar parental homes, free jazz, terrorism, L*D and incredibly long hair. It also extends into the future – towards global recognition and the formation of myths, techno and post rock music. Their public reading will see Christoph Dallach and Andreas Dorau make use not only of words alone but also of films and records.

Mathieu David Gagon is the composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist for the project Flore Laurentienne. Born in St. Lorenz Stroms and based in Québec, the classically trained musician channels the majesty and light of his defining natural surroundings into phantasmal hues in ensemble interpretations that bring together elements of post-minimalism, early progressive rock, and the compositional art of a fugue. Gagnon studied composition as well as classical and orchestral music at the Université de Montréal and spent time at the Conservatoire d’Aubervilliers in Paris, amongst other places.

Two drums, one singer. Topped off with layers of twisted electroacoustic sounds on synthesizers, guitar and autoharp. Strong influences of punk, krautrock and danceable music amalgamate without being easily identified or even neatly arranged next to each other. Instead, they are dissected and dismantled until they blend into a symbiotic, androgenic and toxic conglomeration of sounds. Rather than resulting in mere noise or feedback assaults, the compositions consists of endlessly cascading drumbeats and repetitive structures joined by spurts of soft and delicate noise – all suffused with the soothing vocals of Rea Dubach. One of the most offbeat listening experiences of this year’s TransCentury Festival will probably come from Omni Selassi.

Those who are familiar with Annika Henderson know that her signature sound is usually characterised by plaintive vocals set against a dark and dubby, often industrial soundscape. The title of her new album “Change”, however, also marks a shift in sound. Here, her vocals are shrouded in a veil of cautious optimism that outweighs frustration and gives the music a gentle and very soothing touch. Having developed her own musical language, Anika clearly sets herself apart from obvious genre classifications. We are looking forward to the first concert of Anika and her band, which will include the drummer Eilis Frawley and members of Plattenbau and 13 Years Ciada.

The musical collective Orchestre Tour Puissant Marcel Duchamp was formed in Genf in 2006 upon the initiative of the contrabassist and culture activist Vincent Bertholet. It’s made up of 10 to 14 instrumentalists who move between free jazz, post-punk, contemporary experimental music, West African grooves, and brass band sounds, including minimalist approaches with progressive virtuosity and symphonic flights of fancy. This palimpsest of poetry and aesthetic might seem surprising, but it resonates with the name of the group, which refers both to one of the best-known conceptual artists in Western art and to the pompous titles of orchestras in Congo or Benin.

Horse Lords are the rabble-rousers of experimental music and radical thinking. Their music is shamelessly fun and to experience them live is an experience of collective ecstasy where everybody shakes to their own interpretation of what the rhythm could be. The Baltimore-based quartet’s new album “The Common Task” is so propulsive, you’ll feel it in your stomach and be compelled to move. Algorithmic composition techniques, microtonal harmonies, and rich use of polyrhythm are of no secondary importance but rather make this album a danceable, rhapsodic whir, part and parcel of the party.
