The first half of the year has been a tremendous success with our trade fairs IE expo China, IFAT Brasil, IFAT Munich, Singapore International Water Week, and IE expo Chengdu. A big thank you to all our exhibitors and visitors for making these events unforgettable!

After IFAT Munich 2024 is before IFAT Munich 2026 💙💚🧡

Last week we had our first team workshop in Bad Tölz after IFAT Munich 2024. We were able to get to know each other even better as a team and also made our first plans for the future of the world's leading trade fair for environmental technologies.

🔦 How do we want to develop IFAT Munich further? What worked very well and where is potential for optimization? What topics do we want to focus on?

✔️We have asked ourselves these and many other questions and will use the next two years to find an answer to each of them - stay tuned!

For the majority of society, waste garbage cans and containers are not particularly spectacular. But IFAT Munich participants know better. 🧡

From large to small, from monochrome to colorful, with digital technology or without, for industrial or municipal use - used correctly, they are an important part of the circular economy and can help to channel material flows in the right direction as early as possible. 🤝

Already heard? The city of New York wants to combat the flood of black bin bags on the streets with collection containers. And the first successes can already be seen. We are curious to see whether the ambitious concept will catch on, as residents also have to get involved. For us, it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Large events always mean a lot of waste. As the world's leading trade fair for environmental technologies, particularly in the field of recycling, it is important to us to give waste a second life. Our colleague Janina Nowack was looking for a partner for this and found TRASH GALORE Together we saved 153 kg of waste from the dumpster.

The blockout fabrics, PVC banners and Kapa-Plast pallets are now in good hands with logistics partner UG Treibgut, which is committed to promoting local material cycles, and are waiting for their second life.

IFAT Munich 2024 was record-breaking!

🚛 300,000 square metres of space: bigger than ever!

🧑‍💻 Over 50% of visitors and 55% of exhibitors from abroad: more international than ever!

For over five days, discussions, inspiration and networking took place in 18 halls and on the large outdoor area. Our 220 speakers shared their expertise with us on the various stages. Interested parties were able to keep up with the rapid pace of developments in the industry on our solution tours. Definitely not a WASTE of time.

We WOOD like to thank all the interested visitors and exhibitors who made this trade fair so special.

🗓️ And save the date: We will welcome you back to Munich, 4-8 May 2026.

How will we live in the future?

On the final day of IFAT Munich, presentations by the visionary Oxford professor Ian Goldin and the international star architect Daniel Libeskind offered additional perspectives on our future living environment - also against the backdrop of climate change.

Professor Goldin, a leading thinker on globalisation and development, emphasised: "Cities are the most efficient places in the world, much more so than the countryside. The environmental solution for the world is to make cities efficient where they are! ".

Libeskind introduced his design concepts by presenting some of his world-famous projects, such as the One World Trade Centre in New York and the Jewish Museum in Berlin. These include densification in favour of a green, liveable environment, the creation of attractive, affordable housing, and the promotion of interpersonal contact and a sense of community. 🏢 🌱

The future of modern road and sewer construction!

The Association of the Building Industry, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering (VDBUM), a long-standing partner of IFAT Munich, is on hand with an impressive live demonstration. Under the motto "The way to emission-free sewer construction sites", the latest advances in sustainable construction will be presented. 🤝

A total of 2,500 m² of outdoor space is dedicated to alternative fuel concepts and innovative attachments that make recycling more efficient. These demonstrations are essential for those involved in on site recycling who need to keep abreast of the latest technologies. Major construction equipment manufacturers are also there, including earthmoving and suction excavators, as well as the latest trenchless shoring and compaction technologies. 🚛

Kick off for the Day of resilient municipalities at IFAT Munich!

Climate change and its impact on municipalities affects many stakeholders.

Public authorities and companies are equally interested in innovative solutions to these challenges. IFAT Munich provided a stage for this topic with a renowned panel.

The most important key takeaways at a glance:

💡 Bernd Düsterdiek (Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund) puts the numbers on the table: climate impacts have cost Germany at least 7 billion euros since 2000, while around 1 billion euros is invested in climate adaptation every year.

💧 Thomas Abel (Verband kommunaler Unternehmen (VKU)) warns that significant investments make rising costs for sustainable water management inevitable.

🌱 Dr. Miriam Haritz (Bundesumweltministerium) announces that the German government is supporting the resilience of municipalities with funding guidelines and the forthcoming Climate Adaptation Act in July 2024.

🏙️ Ekkehard Pfeiffer (DWA) emphasizes the need for an interdisciplinary approach to water-sensitive urban development - a challenge in existing administrative structures.

Peter Frenz (DVGW Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches) also emphasizes the importance of effective risk management along the entire value chain, especially for smaller water utilities.

A panel with experts like Miriam Haritz and Bernd Düsterdiek, alongside county and city association representatives, further explored resilient municipalities' roles, responsibilities, and financing.

It was a day full of important insights and discussions that made it clear that the path to resilient communities requires cooperation, innovation, and bold steps into the future.

Over the past four days, the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) has successfully hosted the "Water Skills Germany" competition for trainees and the "World Water Skills" competition for professionals from around the world at the entrance area west of IFAT Munich. 🌍💧

Specialists from all over the world demonstrated their expertise and agility under pressure in various wastewater technology disciplines. From the perfect sewer entry to the repair of mixers and theoretical challenges such as working in the laboratory, the participants proved their impressive skills.

🏅 Tonight, the winners of the “World Water Skills” will be announced! Swing by at 5:30 p.m. and celebrate the champions. 🤩

💬“We must make a deal out of the Green Deal“

Manfred Weber, Parliamentary group leader and Chairman of European People‘s Party, summed it up today at IFAT Munich. The European Green Deal has made progress in transforming the economy. But it has also highlighted challenges.

With an eye to the European elections, Weber, Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea (Director for Circular Economy at the European Comission), Petr Hladík (Minister for the Environment, Czech Republic) and host Julia-Niharika Sen took a look at the developments surrounding the European Green Deal.

The experts agreed that now that the legal requirements are in place, it is urgent that economically viable implementation follows. It is also important that the rest of the world follows the European example.

Definitely not a WASTE of time 🚜 🌿

The VDMA Praxistage at IFAT Munich make the latest processing technologies for waste wood, park and garden waste and logs tangible.

Among other things, visitors were able to discover how waste wood is not only shredded, but also screened in a seamless process so that it is ready for further processing. The future of biomass processing is not only green, but also efficient!

With modern shredders and screening technologies for park and garden waste as well as the innovative processing of logs into wood chips for CO2-neutral heating systems, the VDMA Praxistage are setting new standards in the industry.

The demonstrations are divided into six segments to suit the target groups:

Experience environmental technology live - that's IFAT Munich. 🤩

The solution tours at IFAT Munich show exhibits live and in action. This gives our visitors a preview of their future use on site.

Today, a group of participants were able to deepen their knowledge of the digitalisation of waste management. The focus was on new digital solutions that take waste management and recycling processes to the next level. From advanced tools for more efficient waste management to platforms for businesses and municipalities, the tour showed how technology can contribute to more sustainable practices.

The feedback? Overwhelmingly positive! Visitors particularly appreciated the mix of expertise, direct dialogue and the opportunity to try out the technologies for themselves.🤝

Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, joined a high-level panel to explore the vital connections between the recycling sector and raw materials policy.

Together with key industry leaders such as Karl Haeusgen, President of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), Holger Lösch, Deputy Director General BDI-Initiative Circular Economy (BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie), Markus Steilemann, President of the German Chemical Industry Association (Verband der Chemischen Industrie e.V.) and Johannes F. Kirchhoff, Chairman of the IFAT Executive Board.

Brantner emphasized the importance of integrating circular economy strategies into our raw materials strategy. Key topics included:

📲 The introduction of a digital product passport

🌿 Sensible limits for pollutants in secondary raw materials

🌐 Opportunities for German and European environmental technologies on the global stage

For Brantner, one thing was clear: "A raw materials strategy without a circular economy strategy makes no sense!”.

The textile industry is facing new legal requirements that require manufacturers to take full responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products - including circularity after use. This Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for textiles was a key topic at IFAT Munich, where Jonas Stracke, Head of Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency at the Confederation of the German Textile and Fashion Industry, discussed the issue with two experts.

Julia Hobohm (Managing Director of the Joint Battery Take-Back System) emphasised the need for a clear strategy and infrastructure, while Julia Haas (Project Manager Business Development at Interzero Circular Solutions Germany GmbH) stressed the need for a cross-industry blueprint ahead of upcoming legislation.

One thing was clear: now is the time for collaboration and innovative solutions!

The world’s leading trade fair for water, sewage, waste and raw materials was officially opened today by Steffi Lemke (Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection) and Thorsten Glauber (Bavarian State Minister for Environment and Consumer Protection). The main theme of this year's fair is "Adapting to the consequences of climate change".

In his video message, Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz underlined the political importance of climate resilience and circular economy as well as the market relevance of the industry. He emphasized the need for a more circular economy as a response to current issues such as supply chain stability, de-risking and raw material security, and promised to create good conditions for the industry's continued growth.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all visitors and exhibitors. We look forward to five days of innovative solutions, in-depth insights and plenty of networking opportunities around the topics of water, wastewater, waste and raw materials management. 🤩
