Amazing how many steps a morning of snow requires. Happy to report fish in the pond, chickens in the coop and all insect life in the natural pool are all well and accounted for.

Woke up to a winter wonderland this morning. Only snows once every few years in Pontons.

For a few hundred years this strange little space stayed hidden behind the rendered walls under the first floor at La Masia.

The historic name of our property is Forn Tueler which means tile oven in old Catalan and this is where the local community would come to buy hand crafted roof tiles for their own homes up until around 1800 and something.

During the renovations at La Masia I was tasked with looking for somewhere convenient to reposition the cumbersome existing staircase that connected the ground level with our living space one floor up.

Like all buildings of it’s age, La masia has no foundations but is constructed directly on top of the mountain where it proudly sits.

After much deliberation and a good amount of indecision about the matter I stumbled upon a small opening in what could only be described as under the house but in the house 🤔.

Anyway the opening was too small for even my modest statue to crawl through to check out what lay beyond. Luckily our best bricklayer onsite at the time also happened to be the size of a 12 year old and so he was quickly dispensed to the land of Narnia with drill in hand to find out what ever he could.

Turned out the opening was in fact the old kiln of Forn Tueler.

‘Drill a hole!’ , I insisted hoping the ceiling was not 1 metre thick bedrock like much of the place. And whoopee it wasn’t. Better yet the drill bit appeared perfectly positioned in the corner space of what was our lounge-room and a better spot for a spiral staircase I couldn’t have imagined.

It’s a fabulous way to travel between floors and back in time all at once.

Happy Friday all, time for a cheeky glass of cava to welcome in the weekend 🥂

Whilst I wait for things to normalise and hopefully welcome guests in the near future I thought I would share some esthetic details from around the property at La Masia.

Old wine barrels and large glass receptacles that we use as vases for fresh flower arrangements are some things we have plenty of.

During the lockdown I have started to draw and I have to say I am really enjoying the learning process. Still a long way to go but trying not to take the whole thing too seriously, hence the public display of my efforts 😂

Looking forward to having our creative retreats up and running again in the future but till then I’ll have to make my own fun 💪

We are open for bookings now so if you are in Barcelona and fancy a break in beautiful wine country get in touch via our website.

Hello from the other side.

I haven’t been part of the social media world since easter not because I haven’t had much to say but because I didn’t want to bring everyone down with my gloomy state of mind.

Truth be told even though I live in a place that is pretty close to paradise and really ‘have nothing to complaint about’ I haven’t been able to shake a deep sense of sadness and grief for the world at large, so I thought it best to shut the hell up until I had something useful to contribute.

Well yesterday I had an idea that I think qualifies as useful.

For months I have been struggling with how to help in some way whilst this pandemic chips away at our lives and livelihoods and I think I have come up with something helpful.

Since my business is completely free of bookings for the foreseeable future: 100% cancellations since March 2020, and I cannot see how the locals are going to be able to afford a holiday this year considering the state of the economy now and international travel is a fantasy for optimists and dreamers alike, I have decided to open our beautiful venue completely free of charge for short mental health recovery stays for local health workers & their partners who just need a bit of break from it all and a non new reality check.

If you are someone who has been saving lives and putting your own at risk for the greater good and would like to take me up on this offer, please 🙏 DM me for details.

If you know someone who fits the bill for this offer 🙏 please tag them in the comments and include

Have to say it feels good to be finally able to do something useful.

Happy ‘what day is it’ everyone 😘🌈💪

Gave the girls a treat today, bok choy that had gone to seed. Hopefully in a few weeks or months we will have no fuss no planting asian greens growing freely around the chook coop.

It is a happenstance veg gardening method that I have been using for 3 seasons now and works a treat. At the moment we have swiss chard, oregano, mint and parsley all naturally seeded and growing in the hay piles the chicks flick to the outskirts of the coop after digesting the seeded crops.

Win win in my book 🥳

Hope you are all holding up ok. I’m going a little mad personally but grateful for everything I have, which in the scheme of things is quite a lot. Stay strong, we will come out of this challenging time better for it.

Big virtual hug to all and special thx to our local suppliers who keep us well fed and looked after

Today’s lunch - Xatò salad minus the bacalao because we don’t have any and it’s not worth the risk trying to get any.

Such an iconic salad of the Penedès region and so simple to prepare no matter where you are in the world.

Ingredients:
Curly endive lettuce
Anchovies
Black olives
The best tinned tuna you can find
Romesco sauce
Boiled eggs
Salt cured cod if you can get it

Method:
Dress the washed endive in a generous amount of romesco sauce.
Scatter over the top of the dressed leaves as much of the other ingredients you wish to and eat with gusto.
Enjoy ❤️

Reflections in the pond this morning. If you look carefully you can see the fish swimming just beneath the clouds. 🥰

This is one of my favourite spots in the zen garden. I often just sit and watch the fish swim and let my mind empty of all other thoughts. It calms me immensely and so I thought I would share it with you all. Please save this post and watch the serene scene whenever you are feeling anxious during these uncertain times.

I hope it brings you peace. ❤️🌈🐠

Scrumptious potato gnocchi for lunch just put a smile on my dial and a warm hug in my belly.

Basic recipe taken from the ‘must have in every kitchen’ cookbook Lateral Cooking by . It’s a bit labour intensive making gnocchi but hey, who hasn’t got the time these days? 😊

Recipe (my ad lib version)

Bake 5 potatoes (1kg) in their skins until cooked.
Peel potatoes when cool enough to handle but still hot.
Push through a sieve or ricer if you are lucky enough to have one.
Sprinkle 75g flour on your clean kitchen worktop, spread over the potato and cover with 75g more flour.
Sprinkle over 1tsp salt and ground black pepper.
Knead together to form a dough.
Heat salted water.
Roll out a tennis size ball into a sausage shape and cut off a few gnocchi.
Drop the gnocchi in the boiling water and cook for a few minutes until they bob to the surface of the water. If they break apart add more flour to your dough and test again.
If they hang in there good news you have just made gnocchi 😉

Enjoy ❤️🌈💪

Huge shout out to all my Australian friends and family who are just starting to feel the effect of Covid19 and are going into lock down ❤️
Please do it 🙏take the initiative and go into hiding like the rest of us even if your government isn’t insisting yet. The sooner we all do this the sooner we will all get back to a new normal.

This image was taken in November 2016, when my beautiful friend travelled to me in Spain from Australia as a surprise for my 50th birthday.

Such an amazing moment and such an amazing gift. We will have these moments again but for now we need to keep apart for the greater good 😞

Love to you all and a huge virtual hug ❤️

Saw an interesting post this morning from - The hospitality industry can’t work from home!

How true and restaurants and bars are having to come up with ideas to keep their services going and their businesses alive.

Unfortunately my home is my business 🙏 and so thinking of ways to keep momentum during this next howeverlong is a challenge in itself.

I urge everyone to not panic cancel their holiday plans for this year at this early stage. Many of my colleagues in this industry are already really feeling the financial king hit from this pandemic, myself included. We don’t know what is going to happen yet so we all need to keep calm and carry on.

I also urge you all to continue to make plans for your holidays this year and to go ahead and book 🙏. We need to know you will be coming so we can keep our businesses operational.
Imagine this all blowing over and everyone wanting to book their holiday only to find 80% of the small businesses to their favourite travel destinations have closed down due to financial difficulties. 😳

Supporting the travel industry will ensure your holidays can actually take place so please get booking and give us some hope. 😉

Thank you to everybody that has been in touch showing concern for our welfare. Im happy to report that we are all well and keeping ourselves safe at La Masia during these difficult times.
Happy also to report that we are taking every day at a time and will not be making decisions to cancel any retreats taking place from June onwards at this stage. Obviously we will continue to revise our position as the future unfolds. As a special incentive to keep positive momentum going and looking forward to the summer months, I would like to offer a 15% price reduction on all our future retreats if you book by April the 31st. Best wishes to all, lets stay positive 🌸

I want to put together a series of wellness retreats led by you and your needs. I am super excited to have a bunch of inspirational foodie & creative retreats already in the pipeline for this year but as we all know the Covid19 is having a negative effect on everyone’s sense of wellbeing and freedom to make decisions about travel in the coming months.

My idea for these retreats is to focus on what we need to fuel our sense of wellbeing, to share our experiences and continue to enjoy life despite the overhanging shadow of these awkward times.

Basically I am offering our beautiful Masia to be a hub where you can design your own bespoke retreat with likeminded folks.

First cab off the rank, I propose a wellness retreat for women that are tackling the difficulties of peri/menopause and the grief it brings with it. Me included 🙃

I imagine the retreat to be 3 nights where we will cook together whilst sipping great wine, share stories of our own journeys in navigating this minefield of emotional & physical change and nurture ourselves in the best way possible.

If this idea resonates with you or sounds interesting for someone you know, then let’s put into action.

Time of year? I say let’s do it in summer when the garden is in full swing, the nights are balmy and cocktails by the natural pool are the best way to spend the long twilight hours forgetting about the daily grind.

For more information please get in contact via my website, deets in bio 👆I would be thrilled to hear from you.😘

Lady just chilling amongst the wild flowers. 🌻🐝

I scattered a bunch of wildflower seeds last autumn over the grass hoping to help retain some water in the soil during the summer in that area of the garden which is prone to drying out.

I don’t ever water the lawn as it’s just so unsustainable to do so.

So now we are enjoying watching pretty little flowers emerge every day and I can’t wait to see how the patch evolves over the next few months. 🦋🦎🐛

So thrilled to be featured in this month’s edition of Olive Magazine! 🥰

Launching our creative retreats this year is an exciting new direction at La Masia and quite frankly I can’t wait for the first of our retreats to begin - Food & Travel writing April 20-24.

Also thrilled to be collaborating with two fabulous writers and seasoned professionals Tara Stevens and Sally Davies who will be hosting the workshop.

Apart from spending your days workshopping your writing you will also get to enjoy fabulous food and superb local cava & wine.

There are 3 excursions organised to get the creative juices flowing:

Day 1: A visit to an award winning micro winery & alpaca farm where you will enjoy a vertical tasting of their 3 best wines over the past 3 years. 🥂

Day 2: Enjoy a 3 course lunch and wine pairing at one of the region’s best restaurants , known for their delicious local cuisine, careful curation of seasonal ingredients and extensive wine list. 🍽

Day 3: Pile into the 4 x 4 and journey deep into the woods to an abandoned village that is said to be haunted. The village location is a well kept local secret 😉and the now crumbling structures have been uninhabited and deserted since the Spanish civil war. Here you will not only enjoy a fabulous story and photo opportunity but a gourmet picnic lunch as well.

Also included is a hands-on cooking experience with yours truly and all in-house meals and drinks during the retreat.

There are still spots available, so if you’ve saved the dates then please get in touch to reserve your place. 👍

So proud of my first batch of sourdough baguettes. Nigel, my sour dough starter, and I have been getting to know each other over the last six weeks and we have turned out some very edible bread samples. My gut is definitely feeling the benefits from eating this type of leavened bread but these guys take the cake so far.

Looking forward to posting my sour dough starter pancake recipe soon which is also gentle on the digestion and packed with delicious flavour-good-for-you-stuff.

Have a great weekend. 😘

I’m not one for Valentine celebrations really. I’ve always felt it a bit forced & the cynic in me just loathes all the selling that goes along with it.

That’s not to say I don’t like a bit of romance or the chance to tell those I care about how much they are appreciated.

So today I am posting this image of a young wattle tree I planted with a bunch of friends last March. The tree was planted as part of my Australian memorial garden and this particular tree is for our friend Maria who we lost the year before. This is it’s first year in flower and it makes my heart swell every time I look at it. ❤️

So, happy love day to you all and especially all my dear ones, be you happily coupled or in the middle of a relationship meltdown, contently single or waiting for love to come along, and especially those who have since gone from this earth but still live on in our hearts. I am thinking of you all on this beautiful sunny Friday in February, 2020. 🥰
