It all began with a love of growing flowers…

My name is Peta and am the founder of Saxon Gate Flowers. I have been a gardener as long as I can remember and have grown flowers on my allotment in Biggleswade for over 15 years. Growing plants from seed and cuttings, seeing them thrive and sharing the joy they give people is what I love. The opportunity to grow cut flowers on a new plot of land at Sa

SWEET PEAS
I planted out our autumn sown Sweet Peas yesterday. I have to admit that I grow them for sentimental, rather than commercial reasons.
My Grandad was a market grower and his Sweet Peas were much better than mine. Their gorgeous scent instantly transports me back to his garden in Kent circa 1979. ###

It's a universal truth amongst gardeners, that however big your greenhouse, it will never be quite big enough!
This is certainly true at this time of year with so much seed sowing and propagating to be done. I spent yesterday shuffling trays of seedlings around which had germinated and could be moved off heat mats. This included Achillea Flowerburst Fruitbowl from which have germinated really well. Achillea is a fantastic perennial which will flower in its first year if sown early. These seedlings will be pricked out and ready to plant out when the weather warms up a bit. I also checked under pots and seed trays for slugs and snails which can creep in unnoticed and wreak havoc at night.
If you'd like to know more about seeds, come along to our Growing Flowers from Seed Workshop in Biggleswade on Saturday 20th April - full details of how to book a place on www.saxongateflowers.co.uk or email [email protected]. This would also be a perfect gift for someone special that would "keep on giving" ###

As consumers we are increasingly aware of the environmental and social impacts of the decisions we make, whether it's food miles, plastic use or buying Fair Trade.
But the global flower industry still faces many challenges particularly surrounding high carbon footprint (inc. Refrigeration and air transport), high use of plastics (especially floral foam and packaging) and workers rights and conditions.
The Sustainable Floristry Network is leading the way in raising awareness about the detrimental impact of the global flower trade and promoting solutions for the industry. As with most things, the answer is to buy in season and locally if possible and ask your supplier how their flowers were produced.
At Saxon Gate Flowers we already grow in harmony with the environment, do not use any pesticides or herbicides and do not use peat based composts. All of our flowers are sold in plastic free packaging.
The SFN Foundation in Sustainable Floristry is a detailed and very sobering examination of the complex issues the industry faces which I would recommend to anyone with an interest in improving the sustainability of their flower business.

This is a bunch of our own dried flowers, specially requested with cheery autumnal colours.
We do not use any pesticides or herbicides to grow our flowers and they are dried naturally to retain their innate beauty. You might almost think they had been picked yesterday!
I have a garage full of dried flowers if you would like something similar for yourself or craft projects - email [email protected] for more info.

But this is tinged with sadness because it will all be gone with our first cold spell, whenever that may be. Guess we'd better enjoy it while it lasts! Xx
