“Milton turns this true story of high politics into an addictive, gossipy, alcohol-fueled, action-packed thriller that sweeps the reader effortlessly through the ups ― and downs ― of the alliance.” ―Mark Piesing, The Spectator World

“Grippingly entertaining. Unlike most books about war, it is serious history, yet light as a feather.”
―Andrew Preston, The Times Literary Supplement

From internationally bestselling historian Giles Milton comes the remarkable true story of the motley group of Allied men and women who worked to manage Stalin’s mercurial, explosive approach to diplomacy during four turbulent years of World War II.

In the summer of 1941, Hi**er invaded the Soviet Union, shattering what Stalin had considered an ironclad partnership. There were real fears that Stalin’s forces would be defeated or that the Soviet leader would once again strike a deal with Hi**er. Either eventuality would spell catastrophe for both Britain and the United States.

Enter W. Averell Harriman: a railroad magnate and, at the start of the war, the fourth-richest man in America. At Roosevelt’s behest he traveled to Britain to serve as a liaison between the president and Churchill and to spearhead what became known as the Harriman Mission. Together with his fashionable young daughter Kathy, an unforgettable cast of British diplomats, and Churchill himself, he would eventually manage to wrangle Stalin into the partnership the Allies needed to defeat Hi**er.

Based on unpublished diaries, letters, and secret reports, The Stalin Affair reveals troves of new material about the path to Allied victory, full of vivid scenes between celebrated and infamous World War II figures.

Andrew Pierce – Finding Margaret: Solving the Mystery of my Birth Mother
Saturday 9 November at 10am at Bridport Electric Palace

Approaching fifty, journalist and broadcaster, Andrew Pierce, tells the moving story about his search for his birth mother. He had lived in an orphanage in Cheltenham for more than two years until his adoption by a loving family who nurtured him. Don't forget to get your tickets for Wayne Sleep, who comes to us for a special event on 20 November at 2.30 pm at Electric Palace. Tickets online from the Palace or contact Bridport Tourist Information Centre on 01308 424901.

WAYNE SLEEP is undoubtedly one of our nation’s treasures – a legendary dancer and entertainer.

In his memoir, JUST DIFFERENT, Wayne looks back on the extraordinary times he has lived through. In spite of dancing with ballet legends Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, partying with Freddie Mercury and dancing with Princess Diana, who became a close friend, Wayne Sleep has always felt like an outsider. Behind the glitz and glamour, he reveals the difficulties for a working-class, gay man in handling the prejudices of his generation and living through the Aids epidemic.
In conversation with writer and broadcaster Natalie Wheen, Wayne Sleep will convey the many moving and laugh-out-loud stories and gossip on his way to success, fulfilment and love.

Tickets from Bridport Tourist Information Centre 0138 424901.

'My new book - Screwed - is about how and why the once proud law-enforcement agency I worked in has descended into near anarchy and, more importantly, how to get it back on track. Screwed tracks the disastrous political decision making since 2010 that culled 26 per cent of prison officers to save money while the prison population of around 84,000 remained static.' We're delighted to welcome back Andrew Ziminski to BridLit where this year he'll be talking about Church Going: A Stonemason’s Guide to the Churches of the British Isles.

Churches are many things to us: they are places of worship, vibrant community hubs and oases of calm reflection. To know a church is to hold a key to the past that unlocks an understanding of our shared history. Andrew Ziminski has spent decades as a stonemason and church conservator, often acting as an informal guide to curious visitors. Church Going is his handbook to the medieval churches of the British Isles in which he reveals their fascinating stories – a celebration of British architectural history.

POETRY WORKSHOP!
Why not join this creative writing session and bring along a fellow-minded friend or two to this special event?
Poet and tutor Gill Barr shares her insight and experience of her writing journey in an uplifting Poetry Workshop, aimed at both aspiring and experienced poets. In this two-hour enlightening session, Gill will guide creative writers through a series of tasks to open the imagination to the ever-changing world, explore new perspectives and enhance the poet’s unique use of metaphor. Themes will be wide ranging. Gill is happy to critique a poem of no more than 40 lines by each participant prior to the evening and is greatly looking forward to a lively debate on writing poetry.
It's on Wednesday 6 November from 6-8pm in a private room at The Bull Hotel, Bridport where last year we held a brilliant creative writing session with author Nikki May. Contact Bridport Tourist Information Centre to book tickets – 01308 424901

Lavinia Greenlaw is one of the country’s most celebrated poets, novelists and memoirists. The Vast Extent is a beautiful and ingenious consolidation of a thirty-year body of work. In a series of essays, she presents a record of how thought builds and ideas emerge – aligning art and scientific scrutiny and exploring subjects as broad as early photography, boredom, seasickness, wonder, mountains and mice. Lavinia will also read from her Selected Poems which have established her as one of the most perceptive and original poets of her generation.
She's in conversation with Caroline Montagu at Sladers Yard on Thursday 7 November at 6.30 pm.

‘Delivered with flamboyance, it features a sparkling cast of chancers’ KATJA HOYER, Daily Telegraph 5* review

‘Page-turning . . . a sizzling high-stakes tale’ JAMES HOLLAND

‘Giles Milton is a phenomenon’ DAN SNOW

‘Another rollercoaster ride from Giles Milton. Endlessly surprising’ ANTHONY HOROWITZ

From internationally bestselling historian Giles Milton comes the remarkable true story of the Allies’ secret mission to wartime Moscow.
In the summer of 1941, as Hi**er invaded the Soviet Union, Stalin’s forces faced a catastrophic defeat which would make the Allies’ liberation of Europe virtually impossible. To avert this disaster, Britain and America mobilized an elite team of remarkable diplomats with the mission of keeping the Red Army in the war.
Into to the heart of Stalin’s Moscow Roosevelt sent Averell Harriman, the fourth richest man in America and his brilliant young daughter, Kathy. Churchill dispatched the reckless but brilliant bon vivant Archie Clark Kerr – and occasionally himself – to negotiate with the Kremlin’s wiliest operators. Together, this improbable group grappled with the ingenious, mercurial Stalin to make victory possible. But they also discovered that the Soviet dictator had a terrifying masterplan for the post-war world.
Based on astonishing unpublished diaries, letters and secret reports, The Stalin Affair reveals troves of new material about the most unlikely coalition in history.

Of all the ancient art that captures the imagination, none is more appealing than the Cycladic figurine. An air of mystery swirls around these statuettes from the Bronze Age and they are highly sought after by collectors – and looters – alike. In her new novel Victoria Hislop shines a light on the questionable acquisition of cultural treasures and the price people, and countries, will pay to cling on to them.
We're delighted to welcome Victoria Hislop to Bridport on 18 September at 2.30 pm when she'll be in conversation with Sally Laverack at Bridport Electric Palace.
This is a popular event - Victoria is a number one bestselling novelist - but there are still some tickets left.
Tickets from the Electric Palace online https://www.electricpalace.org.uk/events/event/bridlit-book-club-victoria-hislop/or from Bridport Tourist Information Centre in South Street, Bridport, either in person or by phone on 01308 424901.

For centuries, men have been writing histories of antiquity filled with warlords, emperors and kings. But when it comes to incorporating women, aside from Cleopatra and Boudica, writers have been more comfortable describing mythical heroines than real ones. Spanning 3,000 years, from the birth of Minoan Crete to the death of the Julio-Claudian dynasty in Rome, award winning classicist Daisy Dunn explores the stories of dozens of women in The Missing Thread that puts them at the centre of the narrative.
Thursday 7 November at 2pm at The Sir John Colfox Academy.

With Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine, the world is gripped by concerns over energy security. Yet, there is an even greater threat ahead – one that is much more likely to shape the events of the 21st century than competition for oil or gas. A combination of an ever-increasing global population, climate change, industrialisation, urbanisation and limited natural resources means that one difficulty will shape the years ahead – water.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Helen Molesworth with her illustrated talk PRECIOUS, can no longer be with us.
In her absence, we have invited Ian Acheson to talk about his book SCREWED: Britain’s Prison Crisis and How To Escape It.
We feel that the prison crisis is very much at the forefront of both public and political awareness.
Ian Acheson has served for 20 years as both an officer and Prison Governor. In 2015, the then Secretary of State for Justice Michael Gove asked him to lead an independent review of prison extremism which laid bare a corporate culture of ineptitude, secrecy and arrogance that threatened national security. Nothing has changed. Screwed is the inside story of the collapse of His Majesty’s Prison Service told from the frontline. This hard hitting account looks at the politics and the operational decisions that have driven our prison to rock bottom, where extreme violence, indolence and victimisation are normalised. Acheson also outlines how a new corporate culture and mission can achieve a much needed revolution in the way the service is run.
Date: Monday 4 November
Time: 10.30 am
Venue: The Bull Hotel
Tickets: £12

Those of you who have already bought tickets for Helen Molesworth may ask for a refund, swap to a different event or have your ticket exchanged for Ian Acheson.

She rose from abject poverty to superstardom before she was 30 and became one of the country’s most celebrated and revered tragic actresses, electrifying audiences with her performances.
Author Jo Willett, a BAFTA and Emmy winning producer who produced A Rather English Marriage and Dirty Tricks says: 'A superb actress, a celebrity superstar in her lifetime, a working mother with problematic marriage, Sarah battled to protect her reputation from a vicious press. Could wolves make a return to Britain? Derek Gow, author of Hunt for the Shadow Wolf: The Lost History of Wolves in Britain and the Myths and Stories that Surround Them, certainly hopes so.
What do YOU think?
Gow comes to BridLit on Monday 4 November to The Bull Hotel, Bridport at 6pm in conversation with Sam Rose .
Wolves were endemic to Britain around the time of the last Ice Age 10-12,000 years ago. Sightings in this country have long been restricted to cages at zoos and at wildlife parks. After raising two cubs in his home, Gow became fascinated with the wolf. With bitingly funny and tender stories, Hunt for the Shadow Wolf is his quest to reveal the true nature of this magnificent creature and, as a maverick re-wilder, his hope that we will see the return of the wolf in Britain.
