is coming to the end of a placement year at - here’s what he had to say: “I have had the privilege to spend my placement year at Jason Bruges Studio [JBS] based in London. Over this year I’ve worked on some phenomenal projects, ranging from light shows to digital artworks. The studio is built up of a creatively diverse group of people, ranging from architects, creative technologists, structural engineers, etc. It’s been inspiring to be involved in so many projects, with a range of people and to see how the projects evolve over time.
Blink is one of two projects I want to show, and one of many projects that I have worked on in my time at JBS. The charity SightSavers wanted to create an interactive installation which highlighted the effects of an eye disease called Trachoma. The disease slowly and painfully degrades your sight every time you blink – it’s important to note that they do not become blind, they lose their vision. JBS and SightSavers wanted to try and digitally recreate this effect.
For the exhibition I coded a piece of software which tracks your eyes when you look at one of 5 digital artworks around the room. Every time you blink, it will degrade the image by re-arranging the pixels – eventually leaving the artwork unrecognisable when compared to the original piece. It was important that none of the image information was lost when degrading the image, as we wanted to recreate the effects of the disease as close as possible.
The second project is a project that I worked on called the Shadow Wall. I was tasked with coding the back end of this project and making it function as intended. As you walk in front of the wall, your shadow / your form is shown on the wall. You and other people can interact with the wall at the same time. This was a really cool project to work on because although such a simple idea, it is extremely effective and visually beautiful. A fun fact is that there are 13,000 LEDs in this installation.“
